Do you tip after a haircut? How much?

I've always wondered what is polite and what is the right thing to do? I'm always a bit awkward about giving tips and never know how to..

Yeah. 20-25%. Would be interested to know where the tippers are from because everyone Scottish I know tip but all my English friends are surprised by this.

I tip my hairdresser each time. He's fab, it's only £25 for a cut and blow, so I put £3 on each time. Gave him £10 tip and a nice wine each time we returned from lockdown and lovely Birthday and Christmas gifts.
He always prioritises me with bookings/free fringe trims etc.
I ♥️ him!

Perhaps it comes down to cost. The very cheapest cut and blow dry at my nearest hairdressers is £53. It goes up to £229 in the same salon if you get one of the master cutters- just a cut and blow dry.

Omg that is expensive! I think I'm just super lucky with the prices at my salon (East Mids) and I'm happy to boost my hairdresser a little. I always do £1 for the lad who washes my hair and a Christmas present as well.
It might not seem a lot to tip but it's always gratefully received and I don't earn much in my job!
Conversely, I feel awkward tipping anywhere else. Usually leave a couple of pounds in a restaurant and don't tip my beauty salon friend, but I thoroughly spoil her at Birthday and Christmas with Molton Brown goodies!

Thanks. I think I’ll do it when they walk me over to the chair.
I usually do it at the till and they don’t have a tip pot. I have to remember the staff members name and what they look like. I’m really bad with names and faces.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/03/2021 14:40

Yes, £5. I think I’m being a bit tight but it’s so expensive anyway.

I occasionally tip if I'm feeling particularly joyous after a cut, or if they've been able to fit me in at short notice. I also tipped my hairdresser on the last day before they announced lockdown in my home country, as there'd been rumours about it but nothing set in stone, and I had the feeling I wouldn't be seeing her for a while.

I only ever tip a fiver; it's all I can afford generally.

my "tip" is me now being a regular customer
Oh you mean like all their other regular customers? Ones who actually tip them Grin
