Do you tip after a haircut? How much?

I've always wondered what is polite and what is the right thing to do? I'm always a bit awkward about giving tips and never know how to..

No

Cookerhood · 14/03/2021 11:30

Having worked as a Saturday girl in a salon as I teenager, I tip. When DD did the same I noticed that tips were a lot more rare. I used to double my wages, which were £4 a day. Thirty years later she was bringing home about the same amount but being paid £35. I don't tip if it's the salon owner, which for some reason is the "tradition". We now mostly have our hair cut at home so I don't tip but do buy her a present at Christmas & will sometimes round up the amount, but not every time.

Cookerhood · 14/03/2021 11:31

Yes, I tip the person who does my pedicure £2. Can't wait to have a pedicure (& a haircut!).

Susanthepig · 14/03/2021 11:31

I tip if the hairdresser is employed as it’s often a minimum wage job. Self employed is a bit different.

MrsOrMiss · 14/03/2021 11:32

Yes, she's great, usually £10.
I only tip in other instances if I'd received a good level of service, no matter who they are. If they're particularly bad, I tell them why they aren't getting a tip. How are they going to improve if you don't tell them? I don't think it's an American thing as such - though in the US, some restaurants provide a scale on the bill which (5% = X, 10%=Y, 20% =Z).

grapewine · 14/03/2021 11:33

I don't. It's not customary in Denmark. I qmight tip the taxi driver if I pay with cash. But it's rare.

The prices are higher as are the salaries. It honestly would never occur to me to tip on top of an already expensive haircut.

flingleflongle · 14/03/2021 11:41

Not at all. They charge an amount per cut which goes to their salary. I never tip...only do in a restaurant if the service has been exceptional. Would you tip a shop worker or supermarket cashier?!

Midlifephoenix · 14/03/2021 11:42

This may not be America but I'm pretty sure tips are expected. I give £5 to stylist and one or two pounds to the girl who washes.
My mother, who lived in America, tended not to tip each time but gave a nice gift at Christmas.

Midlifephoenix · 14/03/2021 11:44

@flingleflongle the difference is it's a personal service.

Frazzled2207 · 14/03/2021 11:47

Usually a fiver.
Not always.
But I used to go to a very expensive hairdresser- he was good but overpriced IMO. Worth paying for but not worth paying over and above what I was already paying!

flingleflongle · 14/03/2021 11:53

But they charge x amount for a service. That's what I agree to pay, so that's what I pay. I don't tip hand car washers, physio, dentist, plumber etc. Just not in my nature

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 14/03/2021 11:55

For a £25 hair cut I tip £5. She is self employed and had a crap year so I’ve paid for one in advance (for July) plus tip.

StillGoingToWork · 14/03/2021 11:56

No. It's already £50+ for a cut and blow dry where I live which I already resent paying.

TopTabby · 14/03/2021 11:56

I usually do, I pay the bill by card & give a £5/10 tip in cash. She works really hard & always does a fab job with my difficult hair so I don't mind at all.
It's not an expensive salon though so that probably sways me a bit!

Notonthestairs · 14/03/2021 12:00

10% and always ask her to split it with whichever young woman/lad who has washed my hair.

VegimalCrudite · 14/03/2021 12:01

How do you tip the person that washed your hair? Do you have cash in your hand at the ready and give it when they’re finished? How much? Anything less than £5 seems cheap but that’s a lot in terms of the time it takes. Or do you give them a tip when you pay at the end of the haircut? If you do that how do you find them if it’s a big hairdresser?

PattyPan · 14/03/2021 12:02

No, I only tip waitresses/waiters. Plus I only get an all one length dry cut so it’s not like they have to provide a particularly challenging service for me.

PinkBuffalo · 14/03/2021 12:02

I tip mine a couple of quid he comes to my house to cut my very short hair and charges very little (£12) so I always give him a couple extra
I cannot wait for my haircut again!

UseOfWeapons · 14/03/2021 12:03

No, I don’t.

Cookerhood · 14/03/2021 13:06

I either go & find them, or ask if there's a tip pot for them, or ask for it to be passed on. If you ask their name while they are chatting to you while washing your hair it's easier.
Cookerhood · 14/03/2021 13:07

Or when they walk you over to your chair. They won't be embarrassed, just very grateful.

ParkheadParadise · 14/03/2021 13:13

Yes, I do. Usually £5 I do go every week to the hairdressers and have my colour done every 6weeks.
Also, tip £5 when I get my nails and eyebrows done.

grassisjeweled · 14/03/2021 13:14

Yes, about 30%. My hairdresser charges low prices though

FredaFox · 14/03/2021 13:17

No, I already pay enough for my haircut (£50+) if I paid less for a cut I’d tip

BananaDaiquiri · 14/03/2021 13:23

£5 usually

My mum was a hairdresser in the 60s and 70s. She tips her hairdresser, and also gives £2 to a junior/apprentice if they wash it first. So I've followed what she does really.

Since I'm in London and pay waaaay more than she does at the hairdresser (she is t'up north), I do wonder if I should tip more.
