Do masks make people look older?

They make you focus on the eyes and any crow's feet or number 11s, whereas normally you'd be able to offset it with say bright lipstick or other make up (contour, blush). I think they make me appear older (mid forties).

Hide the jowls and I look younger (60s)

RacheyCat · 12/03/2021 13:09

Yeah, I think I look more wrinkly and tired in a mask, but then if I wear one for too long, it makes my face and my eyes puffy and I look even worse with it off.

I hate masks. I wear one, of course, and since I live in Asia I've been on the mask bandwagon since last January. I was never a mask refuser. But I hate them.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 12/03/2021 13:13

I’ve definitely thought this about myself. The top half of my face looks older than the bottom half - crows feet around eyes and permanent dark circles vs nice full lips and good teeth. I try to make up for it with excellent eyebrows.

upadaisy · 12/03/2021 15:21

I've been ID'd 4 times in shops while buying alcohol wearing a mask in the last year. I'm 47 Grin

cannaethink · 12/03/2021 15:26

I’ve been ID’d a few times with a mask on too, I’m late 30s. One time it was for a tattie peeler Grin

I think I've aged in the past year especially around my chin and mouth area. I've also had quite a few spots/rash on my chin due to masks rubbing. I'm not complaining about wearing masks at all, it's just an observation.

wonkylegs · 12/03/2021 15:45

For me they are a definite bonus
I don't have old eyes but I do have a spotty chin (never having suffered from acne before fate has decided to deliver it to me in my 40's 😳) fine lines around my mouth and more double chin than I'd like (lockdown chocolate)

AmelieTaylor · 12/03/2021 15:45

Depends on where/how you're aging really.

I look younger & less like death warmed up. I seem to have shed around my Jowels/mouth more quickly. Shove a mask on that compliments my skin & my glasses snd I look a LOT better Grin

Younger! I had my vaccine yesterday and was asked if I could be pregnant. I’m 58. The nurse said, sorry I have to ask everyone who looks of childbearing age.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/03/2021 15:52

I don't think so - I've been ID'd twice whilst buying wine in a mask. I'm 42!

likeamillpond · 12/03/2021 16:23

Haha That happened to me last week.

Masks hide a .altitude or sins.
To the person saying they have aged around the eyes.
The one good thing about SD is that nobody is close enough to see the lines.

Face mask + social distancing + older woman = Win win situation

RacheyCat · 13/03/2021 02:15

Here, we have masks but no social distancing, so everyone can see my frowny wrinkles up close. Grin

Bythemillpond · 13/03/2021 02:19

Definitely younger. I am in my 50s and don’t have any lines on my forehead or any crowd feet. What I do have is saggy jewels which age me so covering them up is great. I caught sight of myself in one of those self service till cameras and honestly thought I looked about 35.
Definitely thinking of a lower face lift after this is all over.

Bythemillpond · 13/03/2021 02:20

Saggy jewels🤣🤣🤣

Jowels

cerseii · 13/03/2021 02:22

I don’t think they make me look any younger/older but I do look better without one on. My lips/chin/jaw are my better features vs my recessed under eye circles!

TheWarbler · 13/03/2021 02:34

I had my vaccine yesterday and was asked if I could be pregnant

They're asking all women that - including me Grin They have your age on their paperwork/computer!

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 13/03/2021 02:37

Definitely older, somehow my mask seems to push the skin below my eyelids upwards and sit on top of the mask so gives me wrinkles I haven’t actually got, I have a small face though, I think my mask is too deep for it.

MrsGannicus · 13/03/2021 07:34

I got braces fitted in Feb last year so they have been a bit of a bonus for me. Although I've used to them now so less self-conscious.

Nitw1t · 13/03/2021 07:55

I think it's the last year that's made me look older!

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 13/03/2021 08:05

I also got id'ed in my mask . I'm 37. I think it hides my double chin, (cheers lockdown weight gain Hmm), so I look less fat too. Hooray masks Grin

hettie · 13/03/2021 08:37

Well I dunno but in the first few months of mask wearing I was asked for ID whilst buying wine three times. I was always a bit baby faced (asked for ID on occasion in my 30's) but I am 47 FFS! There is no way if you saw my full face I could be mistaken for being in my 20's

Tehmina23 · 13/03/2021 11:47

I have to wear a mask at work all day. I feel it draws attention to the darkness under my eyes which I do try to conceal...
I feel I have to wear eye makeup all the time now.
I keep getting spots on my chin.
Plus my glasses steam up.
Annoying.

crimsonlake · 13/03/2021 16:34

No idea how masks can make any difference to how you look age wise as most of your face is covered up?
I usually have good skin but having worn a mask in work for almost a year it has ruined my skin, I now always have some kind of blemishes.

Changemaname1 · 13/03/2021 16:35

No iv been asked for ID on numerous occasions while wearing my mask. I guess I have young eyes and a old lower face 😂

Stoppissingonmyheather · 13/03/2021 16:36

Yes they do but also handy for hiding spots coldsores dry lips and wrinkles also very handy when you don't want anyone to recognise you and are in no mood for chatting
