Mascara - come over and tell me about yours. I can't find one that doesn't slip off my lashes by 10am.

Bloomin' panda eyes by mid morning.

I've tried the L'Oreal huge and enormous and massive ones. Waterproof/not waterproof. At the moment it's a Stila one. I think the one before that was Benefits. I tried the Eko tubing one yonks ago when it was new and that just flaked off.

sigh.

I think it's oil in my skin rather than watering eyes but - who knows? Maybe both. Maybe it's hopeless.

Tel me about yours. TIA

You need to find an old mascara from 5-10 years ago in the back of your drawer

It’s so dried out it’s almost solid

Perfect

(That’s the only type that works for me. All mascara’s that are new are too wet!)

Laiste · 08/03/2021 21:46

BurningRed

Have not heard of that one! You make it sound v good.

Same problem here. Currently L’Oreal paradise, which is very a very good dramatic mascara especially with the primer. No 7 stay perfect also works but it’s more ‘every day’ , L’Oreal does a tubing one (dual ended wand red and white packaging )

Maybe you have hooded eyes and/or eye bags and oily skin. That’s the problem with me!

Laiste · 08/03/2021 21:49

@BrideofBideford i'm so glad you said that and it's not just me.

I was saying to DD the other day that there's a point in a mascara's life when it's perfect. It doesn't last long and it's certainly NOT near the beginning. It's near the end when it's a bit thick and lumpy.

Best mascara I’ve ever tried is Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir. Pricey and annoying as you can only buy it in Harvey Nichols in the uk but hands down the best one I have used

mommybunny · 08/03/2021 22:24

I’m using Kevyn Aucoin Volume at the moment but it’s almost gone and I can only get it at SpaceNK (yes I could get it online but that just isn’t how I roll...). It’s pretty smudgeproof but I never put mascara on my bottom lashes anyway.

I would love to be able to buy an awesome mascara at Boots. I have tried all sorts from L’Oreal and they have all been duds.

Op, if your eyes are watering excessively and smudging your mascara it could be your sunscreen, or the moisturiser it comes in. I changed from an Olay moisturiser with SPF in it to a separate moisturiser plus LRP Anthelios and my eyes don’t water so much anymore.

PawPawNoodle · 08/03/2021 22:30

Some of the reason why mascara smudges relates to moisture around the eyes, either on the lids/mobile socket and the undereye. Make sure both are set with powder and that may help.

I use Lash Sensation also, but also have very good results with Too Faced BTS, Urban Decay Freak (has a weird brush but you get used to it) and YSL Faux cils.

LifesLittleDeciders · 08/03/2021 22:33

Serious question: does the way mascara stays on depend on the person/hair type? - I’ve used every mascara under the sun (can never find one to make my eyelashes look super long without looking like spider legs!) but I’ve never had the panda eye, smudging, fall out issue from a mascara.. and I’m mid-20’s so I wear at least 3 layers of the stuff if I haven’t glued on a bunch of fake ones that day 😂

LifesLittleDeciders · 08/03/2021 22:34

Unhelpful sorry - I love the maybelline one I can’t remember it’s name but it’s in a shiny purple tube with a curved bristle wand- that one is amazing and doesn’t clump at all!

Sarcobaleno · 08/03/2021 22:35

Max factor 2000 and I get lots of compliments about my eye lashes. Lasts all day no problem

DumpedByText · 08/03/2021 22:46

I have the same problem, the only mascara that doesn't budge at all for me is Clinique Lash Power.

It literally doesn't come off until you use warm water. I've used it for years, I've tried others in between and always go back to it.

Bettina500 · 08/03/2021 22:59

Yes it can depend on skin type and how hooded your eyes are.
I've worn mascara all my adult life and never used to have a problem with smudging until the last couple of years. Either my skin is starting to droop or the formulas are changing for the worse.
Wilko do a cheap mascara that makes my lashes really long, but this then leaves a row of dots under my eyebrow where my lashes touch the skin!

BigButtons · 08/03/2021 23:01

I have used the no 7 one for years. It doesn’t damage lashes and stays out until you chose to remove it. It can also be found very cheaply on eBay.
It’s about brainier for me. I never have to work about panda eyes - ever. I have dalliances with other mascaras but always come back to this with my tail between my legs( if I had one).

BigButtons · 08/03/2021 23:02

And having been bamboozled by the Harry Meghan interview I clearly cannot type anymore.

Builtthiscityontoiletrolls · 09/03/2021 02:36

Definitely try double ear OP Grin it’s tubing and works for my oily lids without being crispy like I found no 7 stay perfect was. I have hooded eyes and that makes it worse but DW doesn’t move. A good eye primer like urban decay makes a massive difference to makeup staying put. More so than setting spray or anything. I use gel eyeliner in a pot. Maybelline I think. And kind of set/soften with eyeshadow over the top.

Rina66 · 09/03/2021 05:57

NYX Worth The Hype Waterproof mascara available at Boots - £9.

This stuff is amazing, I used to use Marathon Mascara years ago until it was discontinued, this is the only everyday mascara I’ve found since that does not budge all day, which also means it sets the curl in my very very straight lashes too.

For context I wear Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation and DW lip pencils, also Benefit waterproof eye pencils with a smudger on the end, so I do like a long wear product.

TheVampiresWife · 09/03/2021 07:45

Any of the ones from Essence. Honestly. I've used ones which cost ten times as much but all of the ones in this range are brilliant (particularly the Lash Princess ones). They're all around £2-£3 and you can buy them at Wilkinson's but also on Just My Look, with free postage.

violetbunny · 09/03/2021 07:56

Yes yes to tubing mascara!

Bettina500 · 09/03/2021 09:51

Essence Lash Princess was one of the worst for smudging for me SadGreat mascara but left constant black dots above my eyes

Laiste · 09/03/2021 09:54

I'm being swayed to the Clinique or the double ear.

I wear DW foundation and know that's good.

I haven't got hooded eyes but I have an oily T zone. These last few years i've been wearing heavier anti aging moisturisers and now i think that's triggered the trouble with panda eyes.

I try to steer clear of powder on my skin, but i have some hourglass veil primer stuff (which i don't usually use round my eyes) which i can try. Didn't think of that!

Laiste · 09/03/2021 10:02

Maybe we should name our worst!

Mine was the Maybeline Falsies (Purple tube) and before that one of the Ekeko ones.

The Stila one i'm using at the mo is lovely to put on and lengthens ect, but ... the smudging.

OP posts:
Bettina500 · 09/03/2021 12:55

I used to wear Maybelline Great Lash all the time when I was young, I used to layer it up to really long, dark lashes and never had any issues. But can't wear it now as it's smudges everywhere! Even though I don't have the time to put as much on. Not sure if it's the mascara that's changed or my eyes!
I've tried different Maybelline, Rimmel and Avon ones and all the same. As I mentioned before the Essence ones in Wilko are really bad for it, which is a shame as they are really effective mascaras for the price.

I find a lot of liquid eyeliners smudge as well.

Missmonkeypenny · 09/03/2021 14:37
**@Missmonkeypenny is that the name of a brand of mascara or an actual lash extension?

I tried lash extensions about 8 years ago. NEVER AGAIN! It took me 6 months and £££ to get my own lashes back healthy.

2 of my older DDs have recently tried them and have decided not again as well.

They look fab at first, but
a) upkeep (can't rub your eyes, have to be careful washing ect)
b) damage to lashes
c) price
d) having to top the bloody things up at home because they start dropping out from apx day 3.
e) can't wear mascara over them :p
The brand is Tropic and it's a mascara then a tube of fibres for extra volume which you pop on after the mascara! They come off with just normal cleanser, no damage to lashes at all

CloserClarice · 09/03/2021 19:58

What other types of mascara aren't ina tube? Ive never heard of tubing mascara?

Laiste · 09/03/2021 20:39

Missmonkeypenny ahh - you know years ago i bought a 'fibre' mascara from QVC (white fluff in mascara packaging) and yes it works brilliantly! God knows what mine's called but it's still in the back of my drawer (white fluff has no use by date after all) and i do still use it about once a year when i go somewhere nice

It's a bit of a faff for everyday. You have to brush on mascara and then the fluff and then another layer of fluff and repeat as many times as you have time for like. I used to have to gently squish my lashes between my fingers to get them a sort of horizontal shape again. They get very fat!
