Eyeglasses- what style?!

Going for an eye test soon. I currently wear standard black frame rectangular shape glasses. If I need a new prescription, I’d like to change them to something different.

I have a really really wide, full face, chubby cheeks. Brown eyes & blonde hair. I’m wouldn’t particularly go for brightly coloured glasses, so not bright pink or reds or greens etc, but muted colour of hints of colour is fine.

I just feel the current black ones are a bit ‘heavy’ looking. Oh and I’m nearing 50 if that matters! I’ve seen a few that I like but not sure if I could carry them off.

What seems to be trending atm? Well aware I’m not 21 so what suits a 21 yr old isn’t necessarily going to suit me! I’m just not great a picking out glasses, usually end up disliking them after a bit and they cost a lot, as I need varificols!

Mine are a greyish purple with the insides of the arms pink. They are in my car otherwise I'd take a photo, from specsavers.

Justbetweenus · 28/02/2021 15:51

Bigger frames are what’s in. If you don’t want to go bigger, how about similar frames but in soft black / grey / brown / tortoise shell / navy (as suits your colouring). You’ll keep the look but they might not look so heavy. Although choosing frames is hard during lockdown - wearing a mask + trying styles is not helpful!

I've recently been told I need to wear glasses. I've ordered some through Glasses Direct. You choose 4 pairs to try at home for 7 days and I liked that I could try them on without a mask and get DH's opinion.

So far I'm very impressed with their service although I'm waiting for my new glasses to arrive. I've gone with tortoiseshell.

I went for my eye test at SS & picked out a pair of glasses but nearly fell of my chair when she told me the full price would be at the least just over £300 😳 I paid for my test test & made a swift exit!

I’ve looked at glasses direct, I have in fact ordered a free trial from them before ages ago, just to see what different frames would look like.

They do varifocal as well & they have a similar style to the ones in SS, some sizing so can anyone vouch for their varifocals from them?! They are coming in at least half the price of SS. I’ve ordered another home trial with them to try them on and some others.

OP, I have to have varifocals and they are expensive. Just be careful as getting cheaper varifocal lenses is a false economy as the vision can be terrible. I have to get the top end ones from Boots, Platinum - and there you cannot tell they are varifocal, the vision is seamless. They cost me £250 just for the lenses, not even the frames. I tried a cheaper online company and they were dreadful, had to send them back twice.
I have heard Asda opticians are brilliant and much cheaper, so if I had one near me I would use them.

Notanotherfreak · 02/03/2021 09:12

As for frames, I get Raybans as they are always ‘cool’ (I’m in my ‘50’s) and you can find frames that are wide and fit your face.

salcombebabe · 02/03/2021 09:21

I always went to Specsavers but found their prices were getting too much for varifocals and frames. I went to Asda Opticians last week and got a lovely pair by Accessorize for £80 all in!!!

harryandmarv · 02/03/2021 09:57

I’ve just been looking at Asda online & seen a few pairs that look nice so I’ll give them a ring. I can’t justify paying what SS want to charge, my prescription hasn’t changed that much to warrant that amount!

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed harryandmarv! You’ll save a fortune too x

harryandmarv · 03/03/2021 10:50

So here are a few I’ve picked out, are they fashionable?

I guess I won’t know until I try them on. I do know I want something different to what I’ve been wearing & have been use to.

I'm not a fan of metal frames, so don't like the first two pairs you shared. I do like the third pair though.

I have these ones and love them. I have the Havana colour, but I like all the colours.

LadyDanburysHat · 03/03/2021 11:50

I also have these and really like them for when I don't want my glasses to be so obvious.

Glasses Direct are great. They were so cheap and easy to order. I just took a photo of my prescription.

I have had varifocals from them and I’m very happy with them. Most recently I paid around £80 which included thinner lenses - I have a strong prescription. I have also had varifocal sunglasses which are great.
harryandmarv · 03/03/2021 11:58

Both of those are quite nice as well, I hadn’t thought of a tortoiseshell or clear type. I beginning to wonder if I’m better of with plastic as maybe the nose pads may irritate, will have to see. Thanks everyone Smile

I have these ones and love them! I've had so many compliments www.glassesdirect.co.uk/glasses/cooper/?prca=PRCA50063905&aspect=front

allmycats · 03/03/2021 12:13

How are you getting the varifocals measured up if you buy online ?. Measurements are particular to you and the individual frame.

I love those too. My problem with Glasses Direct is I just want to buy loads of pairs. I already have 3 pairs of glasses and one pair of sunglasses.

@harryandmarv the clear ones are very lightweight too. I hardly feel like I'm wearing them.

salcombebabe · 03/03/2021 12:21

Big frames are in fashion and coloured ones. Black ones can be a bit heavy looking though.
