Facial SPF - before or after moisturiser?

HelloThereMeHearties · 26/02/2021 20:57

I'm using Tretinoin atm so need a 50 SPF for my face. I've bought some La Roche-Posay Anthelios liquid. I tried it on the back of my hand and it's fantastic, just sinks in and disappears.

But, do I put it on before or after my moisturiser? I'm using The Ordinary Buffet currently.

Sun cream goes on after and reapplied during the day. I undid a lot of my progress by not reapplying for one day last summer.

Buffet isn't a moisturiser, you'll find tretinoin will really dry out your skin so I would look for something more hydrating.

stevalnamechanger · 26/02/2021 21:03

Always after !!

Sunscreen is always the last thing before the makeup

stevalnamechanger · 26/02/2021 21:03

And agree buffet is not a moisturizer .

Jackie2022 · 26/02/2021 21:04

Buffet isn’t a moisturiser 😳

You need to apply in order buffet, moisturising, sunscreen

Jackie2022 · 26/02/2021 21:04

*moisturiser

HelloThereMeHearties · 27/02/2021 00:07

Lol, I'm so glad you told me Buffet isn't a moisturiser, I was wondering why my face was feeling dry Confused It wasn't very clear on the The Ordinary website.

Cool! So it will be - Buffet, then moisturiser, then SPF. Thanks!

Can I just ask... what is buffet?

Oh and how do people re-apply their SPF in the day if wearing make-up? Do you just use a spray over the top?

Jackie2022 · 27/02/2021 08:37

@FreshFaceTime Buffet is a hydrating serum from The Ordinary

That’s a good question, I don’t reapply sunscreen on my face during the day if I’m wearing makeup. You can get mists or powders !

CimCardashian · 27/02/2021 08:39

I’m also using Tretinoin.... I just use a 50spf moisturiser,so one thing only.
I’ll have a look at that La Roche one you have, sounds good!

PatNextDoor · 27/02/2021 08:41

What about Ultrasun? That's meant to go on bare skin - I'm so confused about skincare these days. It used to be so straightforward back in the 20th century... Confused

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 09:03

@Jackie2022 thank you. I knew it was from the ordinary range, just wasn't sure what it does. I've seen it mentioned on here quite a bit.

I've just had a quick Google and discovered La Roche Posay spf50 facial mist and lots of the reviews say it can go over makeup so I might give that a try. The only time I top up in the day is if I'm not wearing makeup so would be good to find something makeup-friendly.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/02/2021 09:13

Probably you need more if you've got very dry skin, I find boots protect&perfect sunblock is moisturising enough by itself.

rosesarered321 · 27/02/2021 09:18

I thought chemical sunscreens need to go on bare skin and anthelios is a chemical sun screen, but I'm not 100% on that.

timetest · 27/02/2021 09:21

I think it depends which brand you use. I use Ultrasun factor 50 and they recommend it goes on first. I leave it for about 20 minutes and then use serum and a moisturiser.

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 09:21

@rosesarered321 oh god I have no idea about that!

rosesarered321 · 27/02/2021 09:59

@FreshFaceTime, I know for sure chemical sunscreens need to go on bare skin, (asked a plastic surgeon whilst having a skin lesion removed!) just whether the Anthelios is one I don't know.
I play it safe and put it on first as the sun protection is the most important thing to me.

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 11:52

I always apply it under the makeup I was just hoping to find something I could top up with in the day. Maybe not in the middle of winter but in the warmer months when it's harder to stay out of the sun if you're out and about. Hmmm will have to look into it...

HelloThereMeHearties · 01/03/2021 21:26

Well after confusion and conflicting advice on here and on Dr Google, I decided to make things simple - so I have bought the moisturiser version of Anthelios, and will just wear that without the Buffet Smile

I use Ultrasun and it goes on first?
I have started with vit C, so I have confused myself now.

This isn't a fact it's an opinion .

Many derms have constrasting views

Some brands recommend this like ultrasun because this is the only way they've tested and can guarantee efficiency
