The un-Parisian look

I’ve probably completely misrepresented Parisians here but title named in response to other threads.

Can we have a thread about fun clothes that maybe aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but that bring you joy? Not any particular style but probably not a Breton stripe (sorry).
On order for me right now are a pair of orange dungarees from Lucy and Yak and two vintage T-shirt’s from urban outfitters that have been altered with a bubble hem or a ruched bit. I’d share a link to the UO tops but the stupid thing keeps defaulting to the app not web and the solution is beyond me.

Watching! I like to feel put together but I like bright colours and unusual shapes. Am 3 months post baby and haven't bought new stuff for ages.

BarbaraofKent · 26/02/2021 18:06

This is the thread for me!

I don't think my clothes are particularly 'wacky' or 'quirky' but the 'Classic Parisian' look is not for me. For starters I'm very short and kind of chubby so it just looks ridiculous anyway!

Today I am wearing a pink and red heart print jumper and black/white polka dot skirt with black leggings and DMs for example.

I bought a pair of second hand green Lucy and Yak dungarees from ebay - but I don't really wear them because, despite being really short, the body part is really short on me and the crotch gives me a camel toe unless I wear them really loose at the top (as in almost under my boobs!)

Thinkle · 26/02/2021 18:34

@WheresMyClint I’ve been there, so many things to think about in terms of comfort and shape and potentially access to boobs, being fun kind of falls by the wayside. Hopefully people will post some inspiration for you.
@BarbaraofKent, yes exactly, it’s not about wackiness or quirkiness at all, there isn’t a chunky beaded necklace in sight. It’s about being bold and joyful and YES DMs!
Re Lucy and yak, I’m new to this brand but I understand that they’ve changed the sizing recently and that the long length option is for the long of body as well as long of leg. I also own Run and Fly dungarees which have a longer fit in the body.

As long as you OP are not another MN'er working for Lucy and shat company. There have been a few other threads with people working for them and surprise surprise that is all they seem to wear and photograph.

RampantIvy · 27/02/2021 07:54

DD loves Lucy and Yak, but she is a student Grin

Thinkle · 27/02/2021 08:27

Well @BarbaraofKent says hers don’t fit and I’ve suggested an alternative brand to I’ll say the risk of us working for them is low.
I’m a 40 something professional who enjoys clothes and colour. It’s a self care thing, some people do jigsaws or adult colouring books, I prance about in bold clothes and shop too much 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I like all kinds of stuff but can't get away with dungas. They look crap and sitting down in them gives me major wedges. And getting undressed to go to the loo... ugh. Either wear jumpers etc under them or strip. I've made my peace with them not being for me.

A friend of mine customises hoodies with bleach in cool patterns, I got one for Christmas and I love it.

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 08:56

This sounds like the thread I need. Parking myself here for inspiration. Not buying clothes just now (pregnant) but need to plan for later in the year. First babies were both born in winter and the thought of spring baby flab moving into the summer months is freaking me out a bit. Feels like it's all going to be so much more on show/obvious. Looking forward to seeing lots of un-Parisian ideas!

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 08:58

@Treehops I can't do dungas either. I tried loads because they're so good for breastfeeding access but they just looked absolutely dreadful. My SIL wears them and looks amazing!

KarensChoppyBob · 27/02/2021 09:01

I think dungarees are very hard to pull off for the big of boob. Literally.

Treehops · 27/02/2021 09:11

@FreshFaceTime there are definitely people who rock them!

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 09:11

I think if the big boobs are in proportion with curves in other areas they can look great but if you're top heavy they just look ridiculous. That's my experience anyway.

Treehops · 27/02/2021 09:12

For fun hoodies, if you look for @deryntwelve on instagram, one of her accounts is for clothing (she's a tattoo artist and makes art too so has a few).

Treehops · 27/02/2021 09:15

See I'm bottom heavy but they just don't work! My upper body is 2 sizes down from lower and they seem to mask my shape, hide my hip to waist sliiiiide and just make me look all out balloon! I am also big ish of boob up top though. Mostly for me I think they sit on my tum and make me look like I'm in mat wear. Or wearing a flabby rubber ring under them. Grin

nomorecrumbs · 27/02/2021 09:15

I hate black and I love my dungarees. Watching this thread with interest Grin

KarensChoppyBob · 27/02/2021 09:16

Yy hiding my hip to waist ratio here too. That's one of my few good styling points:)

FreshFaceTime · 27/02/2021 09:19

@Treehops oooooooh interesting... maybe that's the key to making them work... you have to be the same dress size top and bottom??

Treehops · 27/02/2021 09:22

See I love black and monochrome too though, but more in a fancy goth lady way. My ebay watch list is a mess. I have some fun kukubird leggings but no idea about their ethics- they're really cheap Confused

Treehops · 27/02/2021 09:23

Could be, could be!

TeaAddict235 · 28/02/2021 14:38

Yes yes @Treehops "My ebay watch list is a mess."

Mine too! My tastes and style change from day to day. Any psychologist here to explain why? My personality is very consistent and stable, but my dress style isn't.

Peachypips78 · 28/02/2021 17:36

Hurrah for this thread!

I am an hourglass and the Parisian thing makes me look like a shapeless fat box. I don't wear wacky clothes but I don't like black either very much.

Also can't do dungarees due to the 32H issue I have going on.

Sadik · 28/02/2021 17:47

I bought a pair of L&Y cord dungarees but the quality was crap, the cord was just really thin & didn't hang nicely. I'm very short & DP (very nicely) also said they did have a bit of a kids tv presenter vibe going on, so have so far resisted replacing them, but I'm very, very tempted by these from Run&Fly.

My absolute favourite purchase of this year which I've worn an unbelievable amount is a soft wool jumper in a lovely sunset orange from Finisterre. I bought it end of last February thinking it'd be mainly for this coming winter but it's been the perfect thing for outdoor socialising. (I mostly wear combats / skater trousers)

Sendmetobarbados · 28/02/2021 20:34

Very happy to find this thread. I've tried to do the Parisian thing but have concluded the sombre colours and prim styling make me look drawn and, well...boring. I'm in the midst of a bit of a wardrobe overhaul (courtesy of eBay). This Lucy and Yak jumper is my current favourite pick-me-up, and I'm getting increasingly comfortable with dungarees. The look obviously lends itself well to casual but I've no idea how it'll translate to smarter styles when we have a reason to dress up. Will cross that bridge when I come to it!

The un-Parisian look
Sendmetobarbados · 28/02/2021 20:38

PS I think I may have ordered the same dungers as you, @thinkle. Are they the coral ones from the L&Y yard sale?

Peachypips78 · 28/02/2021 21:43

@Sendmetobarbados I LOVE that jumper!
