Does anyone else have the same problem as me with eyeliner not looking the same on both sides?

I used to wear "smokey" eyeliner, both above and below my eyes but not extending out sideways much, and I never noticed anything odd about my two eyes.

For the last couple of years I've come to like the look of sharper "flicky" eyeliner above my eyes only. But when I put it on, 9 times out of 10, it comes out looking different on my two eyes. The angle of the "flick" is different or it goes out further on one side than the other, so I often ending up wiping off and redoing the outer part of one line. I've tried consciously lining everything up perfectly as I put it on, actually saying to myself "OK, this is extending about x mm beyond the corner of my eye and the angle is about y degrees", so in theory they should be exactly the same. They're not, so I think it must be my eyelids themselves that are a slightly different shape. It's not a massive difference and it's quite possible that nobody else would notice, but it slightly irritates me that I can't seem to get it quite right first time.

Has anyone else experienced this, and did you ever discover a trick to help you get it right, or did you just learn to embrace it in the end?

I don't really know how you deal with it, but I've noticed. Not helped by getting older. Have watched various You Tube videos, which suggest for older eyes less of a flick, and a kind of triangle. Short bit going up at the edge of the eye, running alongside the height of the face, then a long part which meets the eye, and fill in the gap. Dunno if that makes sense, or if it would help.

Mine is and I spent years trying to get it right before coming to the revelation that my eyes and eyebrows are slightly asymmetrical, my nose is slightly wonky, my eyelashes are thicker on one side, and my tear trough is deeper one side than the other. So my eyeliner can't be even. Even if it is perfect eyeliner, it will look asymmetrical because my face does not have symmetry

I remember a friend who was doing a beauty course saying that your eyes are “sisters, not twins” so make up will never be exactly the same on both sides.

Not the same thing but one of my eyebrows always looks lovely and neat and how it should be and the other side looks like a picasso. Pisses me off so much!

Thank you all - I'm so glad it's not just me!

SpongeBob I am getting on a bit, so I will definitely try that tip. but I think I also just need to relax about something probably nobody else notices Smile

Try holding a pencil against your nose vertically, then tipping it diagonally so the end hits where you want the eye flick to end. Put a dot there. Then draw the flick to end at the dot.

I've no idea if that makes sense, it needs a diagram really!

I find it more flattering to do a very short understated flick just slightly longer than my eyelashes. Very bold black cat eyes accentuate any natural asymmetry.

My eyes may be sisters but my eyebrows are more like distant cousins.

SmileyClare · 25/02/2021 21:32

Haha yes I'm not sure my eyebrows are related, I'd say at best they were next door neighbours. Grin

Watch Katie Jane Hughes for hooded eyes. As you age eyes start to become a bit more hooded (maybe not even noticeably) she shows you how to do eye makeup with your eyes open instead. I think Pixiwoo had vids too like this

@VanillaAndOrange. Sorry, I was meaning I was getting older, not that you were an old boot. Did you get what I meant, or should I try and do the famous ole MN parking diagram? Grin

VanillaAndOrange · 26/02/2021 18:31

Bob I'd be willing to bet I am older...
