Hair loss after pregnancy!

DS is 16 weeks old and ever since he’s been born my hair is shedding a ridiculous amount! I’ve got long hair and it’s always been bad for shedding but at the moment it’s 10x worse than it’s ever been! If I run my fingers through my hair I come away with loads in my hands and it’s even worse when I wash it. I’m having to empty my hair brush every 2 days 😳

Until I got pregnant I washed and heat styled my hair every day 😬 for the last 16 years 😅 so it’s obviously not as healthy as it could be 🙈 used furlough and being stuck at home as a good time to train my hair out of that so we’re now on every 3 days.

It needs a good cut which I obviously can’t get just now but can anyone recommend any supplements or hair are products that could help strengthen it a bit? 😓 I swear I’m getting bald patches at the sides!

Unfortunately no products will help this - it’s hormones telling your body to shed all the extra hairs that the body holds on to in pregnancy. A good cut will help a lot. I also started wearing my parting on the other side to hide the finer patches. It will grow back eventually, don’t worry!

This is very common after pregnancy as you don't shed as much hair when pregnant so you have 9 months worth to lose afterwards.

Time. That's the only thing that worked for me. Mine was worse with 2nd baby but friends I've spoken to said theirs was worse 1st time and not as bad with next babies. I wasn't just losing the hair that I hadn't lost during pregnancy either – constant clumps and clumps of it to the point of bald patches and couldn't wear my hair up for ages because I had 2 bald areas right at the front.

Currently pregnant and dreading this if I'm honest. You've done what you can by extending time between washes. I swapped to bar shampoo too in desperation as the general condition of mine also went downhill, but it took ages to find ones I liked, so definitely wasn't a quick fix and didn't address the issue of it actually falling out.

Because my hair already felt shit I didn't notice any transition period moving to bar shampoo and my hair feels great now and the condition has never been better, so I'm hoping I've done what I can for next time round and at least I know it will grow back/improve eventually.

Sorry, that sounds so negative and probably isn't what you want to hear. I'm sure it's not that bad for everyone and I guess if your hair tends to grow fast anyway it'll grow back quicker. It did take me quite a while to feel back to normal again though.

@BakedBeeeen I worried that would be the case 🙈 fingers crossed it’s not too much longer before I can get to a hairdresser 😊😓

@dementedpixie I did hear this when I was pregnant but lost just as much as ever while I was pregnant so hoped I would avoid this bit 🙈

@FreshFaceTime yeah my hair does tend to grow fast so at least that’s a bonus I guess 😅 and I never wear my hair up so hopefully the bald patches stay in places I can hide them 😬🙈

Ugh just wanted to offer solidarity. Currently in the same boat and feel like I have three hairs left Shock.

I heard taking biotin was helpful but I haven’t noticed much difference but might be worth a go :)

found it got better after 6 months but worth getting blood checked. things like thyroid stuff and low iron can also cause hair loss.

Squish3 · 25/02/2021 15:53

@PollyPocket245 Sorry you’re feeling the same but it does make me feel better not to be alone 🙈🤣 I’ll look into Biotin, thanks!!

@TheAvenger ohh that’s interesting! I did have slightly low iron in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy but it wasn’t checked again after. Off to down the Spatone shots now just incase 🤣🤣
