Does blue shampoo work on dyed red hair?

So I'm originally naturally a redhead but the pigment has faded with age and now I'm mousey colour with a bit of grey. I had been dying it red but it's looking really orange and brassy. I think I'd like to try going brown. Would a blue shampoo work to strip the orange? Or should I dye it brown?

To complicate matters I've had the Brazilian blow dry so I need to use sulphate free.

Blue shampoo might help neutralise orange tones. It doesn't strip colour from the hair

Thanks @dementedpixie could I dye brown over the red?

I'm in the process of going grey so not the same as you but the transition area is a horrible orangey brassy colour.
I got some Aveda blue malva shampoo and conditioner. It really takes the brassy colour away.

Fanola is sulfate free if you wanted to give it a try. IME it's likely to tone down the orange but won't completely change the colour of your hair.
