Chic Parisian cool girl dresses(dressing)?

GinIsNotOriginal · 24/02/2021 09:51

Just that!
I’m on the hunt for a casual, throw on with anything kind Parisian style dress. I am slim and tall but quite busty which ruins a lot of casual dresses! Any ideas? I’ve looked on Sezanne but everything seems quite oversized/not fitted at the waist at all.
I’m thinking of the kind of dress I can wear with a casual pair of trainers with or without tights

Esprit have some with fitted waists/belted. Lots of casual styles. I've been eyeing them up, but I find it difficult to get a flattering dress, as I'm an oversized rectangle with bad cellulite ... But I'd love to be able to throw on one item in the morning with a pair of sandals or trainers.

Des petits hauts has some nice casual dresses: www.despetitshauts.com/en/new-collection-97.html#!crawl/no/type/dress/
Although with Brexit I have no idea whether they ship to the UK, and I would be worried about receiving a big customs bill!

WhereAreWeNow · 24/02/2021 11:52

Have you tried Sessun?

GinIsNotOriginal · 25/02/2021 02:03

@itto I am in love wkth some of dresses on Des petits hauts but scared about the customs bill! I’ve emailed to see if they can clarify.

@WhereAreWeNow just looking on Sessun!

I’m basically dreaming of an above knee length dress with a fitted waist that I can wear in the daytime with trainers! But equally that looks casual/cool French girl and not like office wear. Argh it sounds simple but apparently isnt!

Have you looked at Rouje?

Although you might get more dresses in all of these shops if you wait a few weeks til all the summer stuff is out.

itto · 25/02/2021 08:15

What about La redoute? They have quite a wide selection from different brands and they have a UK website. They have a collab with Balzac at the moment with a few dresses.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 25/02/2021 08:21

Ooh, good search. I always assume that as a 12-14 i would be XL on a chic french website. Is this right?

SeaShoreGalore · 25/02/2021 08:29

I would say large rather than extra large..

NeedWineNow · 25/02/2021 09:11

I'm rather liking a company called Grace & Mila at the moment. I lean towards their midi dresses but they do shorter ones as well. Here's a link to some of their designs, but I've not ordered from this company so can't vouch for them.

GinIsNotOriginal · 25/02/2021 11:40

I like this dress en.sessun.com/catalogue/robes/mia-vida-navy-heri-m.html but there is still a part of me
That thinks it’s a bit office wear! Trainers would make it more casual but I’m not 100% on it not looking a bit formal.

Looking at rouje and Grace and Mila now!
Unfortunately it seems a loose midi dress is the ‘look’ right now which just doesn’t suit my figure!

Have you tried & Other Stories?

goose1964 · 25/02/2021 18:30

Watch out for delivery charges for the European ones, one is £15 and doesn't say if they include taxes.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 25/02/2021 18:44

I bought a really nice second hand hilfiger dress. They key is that its a great material and that skater shape so v v flattering and looks good with boots and tights but also with bare legs and heels. Like this (www.fashionworld.co.uk/shop/tommy-hilfiger-hem-detail-skater-dress/RW654/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=4015&optionColour=Navy&optionSize=14&promo=6202&cm_mmc=MICROSOFT--Fashion--na-_-PRODUCT_GROUP&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&msclkid=bc463f737d151131138b5f4492d84d82&gclid=bc463f737d151131138b5f4492d84d82&gclsrc=3p.ds) but longer sleeved and black... and not that much money (£20 second hand but perfect conditiion)

VanillaAndOrange · 25/02/2021 18:46

Gin do you suit wrap (or faux wrap) dresses? I always think they are one of the most flattering and instantly classy looking styles for all shapes and sizes - I've got a black one that would be my "desert island" dress. I've never worn it with trainers (that's not quite my thing) but I think it would look just as good with something like low-top Converse or Supergas as it does with more conventional skirt shoes, and I've definitely worn it with bare legs and bare feet or just sandals.

Mcmcmcmc · 25/02/2021 18:54

Have a look at Gerard Darel and Comptoir des Cotonniers.
Some of the loose dresses look nice with a fabric belt tied at the waist if you prefer a more fitted look.

GinIsNotOriginal · 25/02/2021 19:34

I’m just looking on &other stories now, how is their sizing? I’m a size 12 in whistles, size 10/12 in topshop and a 10 in John Lewis own clothing range. I have quite a large bust but small waist and size 32 back in my bra. Should I order a size 10 or 12 in dresses?

GinIsNotOriginal · 25/02/2021 19:45

@VanillaAndOrange I LOVE a wrap dress- that is my go to! But I worry they can look a bit frumpy and like workwear! I would love to be corrected on this matter and find one that is the perfect, casual park stroll dress! That’s the look I want- a nonchalant kind of park stroll French chic vibe.

Not a quick pret run on my lunch break look! It’s difficult!

Sezanne have a beautiful leopard midi dress which I think would work with black converse- just not sure on the jacket and it would need a belt

WhereAreWeNow · 25/02/2021 21:00

I'd go for a 12 at & Other Stories if you're between 10 and 12. Depending on the style. If it's loose and floaty a 10 would be fine.

EdinaMonsoon · 25/02/2021 21:46

Antik Batik have beautiful dresses. In fact, I would happily buy most things from there especially their bags & belts.

GinIsNotOriginal · 27/02/2021 11:32

Would this dress be very unseasonal for wear in the next few weeks? www.stories.com/en_gbp/clothing/dresses/mini-dresses/product.linen-blend-wrap-mini-dress-black.0722809003.html I really like it and can imagine it in the summer with trainers and a tan but not so sure about in colder weather? Maybe with tights, a jacket and nice scarf? FYI I wear scrubs 99% of the time at work and previously used to socialise by going to cocktail bars (have always loved clothes!) so I’m adapting to this ‘walking and coffee’ social life dressing

OP posts:
seensome · 27/02/2021 11:55

^ it's a bit on the short side, above the knee 35" with a front split. Depends on what you feel comfortable with.

GinIsNotOriginal · 27/02/2021 16:12

I’m comfortable with short- I have quite nice legs (by virtue of being tall and standing a lot in my job). I’m just not sure how to style it for day time? What kind of jacket? I definitely think converse for shoes.

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 27/02/2021 18:12

@GinIsNotOriginal you could wear a long sleeve tee or polo neck under that. Perhaps striped or a solid jewel colour

GinIsNotOriginal · 27/02/2021 18:57

@TheDaydreamBelievers I’m looking now for a long sleeve tee to go underneath.

I quite like this leopard jacket to go over the top from Sezanne, I hope it’s French chic and not bet lynch in Paris www.sezane.com/en/product/will-jacket/leopard
