Calling all Mulberry-istas!

After a pretty shitty time, and finding an unexpected windfall land in my lap, I am feeling pretty uncharacteristically frivolous and would like to buy myself a Mulberry purse.

I like the continental and am stuck between two sizes and two colours... so I thought I'd open it out to the MN S&B hive mind before I decide.

My options are Continental Wallet or Medium Continental French Purse. In either Oxblood or Cognac Brown Vintage Croc Print

Continental Cognac Croc
Continental Oxblood
Medium French Oxblood

I love the profile of the larger continental, and that i could fit my phone in it to use it as a clutch if I wanted to. But I also worry that it's size will also mean it's less practical to fit into handbags day to day (sometimes use a cross body) and it might be a bit ridiculously big, so the medium is more practical. Any thoughts on the size of the larger continental would be great...

(Yes, I know "the quality isn't what it used to be" and "it's a ridiculous amount to spend on a purse": that's half the point. I dare say the money would be better off as a mortgage overpayment / in premium bonds / the food bank, but none of these worthy things are going to happen)

Forgot the link to the other one!

Weirdly, i think i prefer the larger continental in oxblood, but the smaller purse in croc

It all depends in the size of your handbags - make sure it fits in the ones you use the most.

I actually just sold two Mulberry purses as I'm just not using cash any more. Replaced them with a card holder.

Your other option is a 'wallet on chain' type thing if you're looking for more of an evening bag. I have the Bayswater Clutch which has card slots in it.

MargosKaftan · 23/02/2021 17:58

I have a continental (the bigger size) that's over 8 years old and looks like new. They are good purses and do look nice to be carried. However since lockdown, I moved to smaller bags and have been using a small card holder. Im thinking when going back to cash /using bigger bags, I might get an inbetween size.

It does come down to your bag sizes.

Maxellious · 23/02/2021 18:00

It will fit all my handbags, bar a tiny clutch that no purse fits in (too narrow). It's just whether it looks ridiculous really.

I still need to handle cash, so Covid doesn't affect that really. It's also a long term purchase, so Covid shouldn't matter really, and I don't particularly like the "wallet on a chain" style.

I have the continental that I bought in August'18 and have used continuously since.
It has cracked where the flap of the purse meets the back bit which I noticed very recently.

Love the first and the last ones 😍😍

Maxellious · 23/02/2021 19:10

Thanks @catwithflowers the croc is a bit sexy isn't it?!

Although the oxblood is the classic, never out of fashion option...

I’ve had the medium continental in black for many years, it has softened but still in great condition. However I’ve actually been using a black mock croc zip around purse for the last couple of years as its better for smaller bags and I’m not carrying cash. The mock croc finish is extremely hard wearing, it still looks perfect. Not much help, I also love oxblood. Any of them would be great

makingmyway10 · 24/02/2021 08:29

All are lovely. I have both styles and love them both. The medium french is probably better for fitting in smaller size bags but the continental is such a lovely purse. I have had one for years and it still looks like new despite being used every day . The oxblood is a great classic colour .

PresentingPercy · 24/02/2021 08:29

Definitely the continental. Or wait until Bicester village opens? Loads there for less money. My Gucci purse is a wonderful thing! More structured.

chatw00 · 24/02/2021 08:47

I would totally choose the medium Oxblood. Classic beautiful colour and the purse itself will hold enough but not as big as the continental - which would be too big for me (I'm happy to fold notes so wouldn't want a full length wallet).

Handsnotwands · 24/02/2021 08:48

The outlets are doing sales over video / WhatsApp. Perhaps contact them and see what they’ve got - it might sway your decision

MabelMoo23 · 24/02/2021 09:12

I have a Mulberry purse, but since lockdown I’ve switched to a Mulberry credit card holder as I have a smaller bag now and basically never carry cash anymore!!

My Mulberry purse was a present for my 30th, I’m now 44 and it’s still in a beautiful condition so you do really get what you pay for

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 09:16

I'm using a crossbody at the moment and the shape of my longer wallet is really pissing me off tbh. Luckily it's old and tatty anyway so I'm looking at replacing it with a card holder or at the very least, something shorter. How often are you using crossbodies? If I was using a Crossbody regularly and choosing a new purse I'd go for the shorter length one. Either way, LOVE the oxblood.

Maxellious · 24/02/2021 10:39

You are all making excellent points, thank you. The smaller size is probably more sensible for flexibility, but the longer profile definitely appeals to me more. Although I'm no closer to choosing, I'm getting even more excited about the idea! My sensible head says I should wait until the shops open and go see them both irl, but I also want it NOW. Grin

@handsnotwands, I didn't know that about the outlets, I will take a look thankyou!

@freshfacetime usually only really through the day at weekends. And even then not all the time. Through the week, my laptop bag doubles as my day bag and I use something more structured (and bigger) if going out in the evening.
