How many clothes do you own?

I understand that this is potentially a flammable topic and I wouldn't expect everyone to feel comfortable answering. But I'm genuinely interested (nosy) what people's wardrobes look like, and what kind of a budget do you allow yourself? I'm enjoying a lot of the "what are you wearing today" threads but I don't have much to contribute as I wear quite a small rotation of clothes really...

Personally, I have 7 shelves in a small walk-in wardrobe and their total height is about 9 feet - this includes about 6 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of joggers/casual trousers, 10 jumpers, 7 dresses, 3 skirts and a too-large a number of t-shirts, tops and sweatshirts, plus sportswear, PJs and some scarves. I also have a hanging rack which is about 4 feet long and that's rammed full. Underwear is in a small dresser by my bed. Coats and jackets are downstairs (I have 8) as are shoes apart from non-seasonal and occasion shoes which are in the loft. I have about 20 pairs of shoes. The loft also houses a 35-litre box of non-seasonal clothes.
I feel like I have a lot but I have friends who have much, much more. I used to but 2-3 items a month maybe but I'm trying to bring that down to 1 max a month as I don't need that much but I do like shopping. I used to spend £100-200 a month but I'm also trying to being that down. It's a one in, one out -policy from now on though. I donate stuff I no longer want.

S&B is a terrible influence though!

Quite a lot more than 18 months ago.
Back then, my entire wardrobe (including shoes and coats) filled in 1×23kg suitcase and an IKEA woven bag with a zip. Now, still quite a lot less than you.

everything fits in one half of a small wardrobe. abt 5 pairs of shoes, 3 coats, 3 jumpers, 2 pairs of jeans, 6 trousers/ leggings, one dress. but I wfh, live in a v small London flat wt no loft and dont really have room for more. Surely it depends on your lifestyle. I have given away a lot lately because I know I am not going to wear it.

ParisJeTAime · 21/02/2021 10:57

Clothes and outerwear - 40ish in my actual wardrobe, plus some more in storage. Not a great deal on storage and most of it being kept for sentimental reasons, like some of them belonged to my late mum who was super glam (unlike me)!

Shoes - 15ish pairs

Sickoffamilydrama · 21/02/2021 11:04

You've got me then me in the jeans, trousers and tops front OP but not dresses I have about 15.

I post on the what I'm wearing thread everyday and the number or lack of clothes doesn't bother anyone, it's sound like you've got enough to rotate posting actually makes me wear more of my wardrobe.

My DH tells me I have too many clothes I've asked for the number that tips it into to many but funnily enough there's no recognised figure Wink

If you enjoy minimum number of clothes & aren't using it to punish yourself or as some kind of measurement of your virtue then go ahead.

Conversely if you enjoy collecting clothes and want lots & aren't using it to fill an emotional hole & can afford it then go ahead.

Sickoffamilydrama · 21/02/2021 11:06

Really must proof read before posting.

That should say you have more than me.

I am Kinsey Milllhone basically! I have one good black dress.🙂

Redruby2020 · 21/02/2021 11:39

@DDIJ

2 tops, 2 prs leggings, 2 thongs, one bra, one pair cotton socks, one pair wool socks, one pair trainers. The wool socks need to go because I no longer have the shoes to wear them with. The thongs are really holey but I can't find like for like replacements as they are so out of fashion. I wish I had just kept flip flops instead of the trainers. I don't wear either pair of socks because I don't wear shoes. I also have one mask which I have worn once.
Is that a joke? One bra? I thought I was bad!

I'm fascinated, @DDIJ. Where do you live and what sort of lifestyle do you have?
When you say 'thongs' are you talking about underwear or flip-flops?

Hardly any but that's because I'm losing weight and in the transitional wardrobe stage. Very much looking forward to being able to design a whole new wardrobe collection once I hit goal.

Right now I have 2 pairs of joggers, 2 pairs of leggings, 2 bras, 3 hoodies, 5 pairs of knickers, 3 T-shirt's, 3 vests, 2 dresses, 1 pair of jeans.

Gone from a 22 to a 16 since August last year. Trying to decide what to do about summer clothes as 2 dresses won't be enough clothes but don't want to buy loads.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/02/2021 12:02

You know those one TON builders bags they deliver sand in to your house ?

4 of them filled with clothes easily

I have (conservatively) 86 pairs of boots/trainers as an example

In my defence I have clothes size 8-20 and am now getting rid of clothes that don't fit - I couldn't before as there was the possibility I would need them again. I have about 2 full black bin bags of size 18/20's to get rid of. Currently hovering around a 16 (some 14's). I'm also 50's so have loads of high heels/boots to get rid of as they were work wear.

Loopyloututu · 21/02/2021 12:03

I have a ridiculous amount - I think I have a bit of a problem though! Buying nice things makes me happy but then I don’t wear a lot of it. Probably only wear about 30% of my wardrobe. I struggle to get rid of things, especially if I haven’t worn it or it was expensive.
I have a dressing room with 6 large floor to ceiling wardrobes and 4 of them are filled with my stuff! I also have a bookcase full of shoes (as well as loads stuffed in the wardrobe) and a large set of drawers full of underwear, pjs, T-shirt’s.
I find I tend to just wear a few old faithfuls and all my new stuff and everything gets ignored. I can spend £1000 a month on clothes (bought some Gucci trainers this week for instance) but then other months spend nothing. If I see something I really like I buy it but I have so much I don’t get chance to wear it all as I tend to reach for comfy stuff (I live in sweaty Betty leggings and T-shirt’s).
I can’t wait for the charity shops to open so I can have a big clear out!

Ooh, I love the alphabet murder series!

AndreaMartelsCoat · 21/02/2021 12:07

I own a horrific amount of clothes and shoes but I do try to make an effort to rotate and wear them. I probably shouldn't have ordered more tops the other day but I did Blush

daised · 21/02/2021 12:09

I'm really attracted to the very minimal wardrobe idea but for a few reasons I am not where I'd like to be with it. The main things are that I'm losing weight and can't afford the good quality basics at every size on the way down; and that I have young, grubby kids and we're very outdoorsy and so there's a lot of changing outfits, or elements of outfits, in a day. Also the British seasons!

I've got:

  • 8 x identical black pants and pairs of socks
  • 2 x bra
  • 2 x trousers (jersey draped and wide leg)
  • 1 x straight leg jeans
  • 5 x tshirt / top (including 2 x smartish blouses for work)
  • 2 x cover up (one cardigan, one kimono type)
  • 1 x midi faux wrap dress.
  • thick winter jacket & spring leather jacket
  • waterproof trousers
  • walking boots
  • trainers
  • brown Chelsea style (but tough and hard wearing) boots

And in the summer I'll buy a pair of Birkenstocks.

Pigtailsandall · 21/02/2021 12:36

Thanks everyone for sharing so far, I find it fascinating how differently people live & the relationship they have with their things.
Like @TierFourTears said, I think I've bought a ridiculous amount since the lockdown started, partly to cheer myself up, but also because I've had more disposable income. Also I had a baby 18 months ago, so I bought maternity clothes; then breastfeeding stuff (which wasn't strictly necessary) then regular clothes as I was a size bigger than before (my feet also went up a size). And most recently I've bought more joggers etc for wfh as beforeIwas in a smart/casual setting! So before getting pregnant my wardrobe was probably half of what it is now. Bit embarrassing.

I must put away some of the smart office clothes. I don't want to get rid of them yet. I expect to return to the office... one day

I know you've elaborated a tiny bit in following posts. And I don't want to be either nosy or offensive. But your wardrobe suggests that, as well as not being involved in work or study outside the house, you never see friends even on FaceTime or zoom - which would force most people to build some variety into their wardrobe. Is this a dislike of clothing in general or necessary/enforced frugality?

There was a time when I owned about ten items of clothes in total - including footwear (but probably not underwear). Weirdly, I was an undergraduate, temping and in a relationship - it's very hard to explain my thinking at the time.

The past year has seen my wardrobe get totally out of control. Looking forward to parcels is how I've survived the monotony of lockdown.

I know why I do it. It's a combination of growing up with nothing and wishing I had a different life. I see clothes and imagine myself wearing them doing things I want to do but can't. I buy the things, then they sit in the wardrobe because I don't suddenly morph into someone else just because I bought new clothes. Then I see more things I imagine myself wearing, I buy them and so on and so on, repeated forever. I'm working on throwing out the tatty things and donating the things that don't fit properly, poverty mentality has me holding on to everything 'just in case'.

I do buy things I can wear for my current lifestyle, so I'll get round to wearing everything eventually and it's a great incentive to not put on weight. I have my own sense of styles (plural, I'm a chameleon) so fashion and looking dated isn't much of an issue. Plus I have so much stuff I can shop my own wardrobe for a new outfit if I want to look on trend.

I've got far too much though and I need to stop buying. I've reached the point I've got nowhere to put it all. I need a spare room just for my clothes, shoes and coats. I don't have a spare room!

When I'm genuinely happy in myself and with my life I find I don't much care what I wear and have no interest in makeup. Whenever I'm not so content though wearing clothes becomes a form of self expression and something I can control, I'll wear makeup even if I'm not going to leave the house. The solution is to alter my life so I'm happier, but that's a long and complicated process. For now I'm still buying, but at a reduced rate.

Oly4 · 21/02/2021 14:11

Loads of everything. Enough to fill three double wardrobes and two very large chests of drawers.
I am making more of an effort to wear everything than I did before.
I have about 40 jumpers but wear them all and for several years.
I spend about £150 per month on clothes at the moment, used to be more

Oly4 · 21/02/2021 14:13

But I spend well under £100 a year on make up
