How many clothes do you own?

I understand that this is potentially a flammable topic and I wouldn't expect everyone to feel comfortable answering. But I'm genuinely interested (nosy) what people's wardrobes look like, and what kind of a budget do you allow yourself? I'm enjoying a lot of the "what are you wearing today" threads but I don't have much to contribute as I wear quite a small rotation of clothes really...

Personally, I have 7 shelves in a small walk-in wardrobe and their total height is about 9 feet - this includes about 6 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of joggers/casual trousers, 10 jumpers, 7 dresses, 3 skirts and a too-large a number of t-shirts, tops and sweatshirts, plus sportswear, PJs and some scarves. I also have a hanging rack which is about 4 feet long and that's rammed full. Underwear is in a small dresser by my bed. Coats and jackets are downstairs (I have 8) as are shoes apart from non-seasonal and occasion shoes which are in the loft. I have about 20 pairs of shoes. The loft also houses a 35-litre box of non-seasonal clothes.
I feel like I have a lot but I have friends who have much, much more. I used to but 2-3 items a month maybe but I'm trying to bring that down to 1 max a month as I don't need that much but I do like shopping. I used to spend £100-200 a month but I'm also trying to being that down. It's a one in, one out -policy from now on though. I donate stuff I no longer want.

S&B is a terrible influence though!

Lots of clothes here.
I do cull regularly, however still have loads. Most is good quality, some is very old (I am old 50+)

3x double wardrobes.
25 pairs of trousers including jeans, crops, joggers etc. Have 2 pairs of leather leggings & some harems included in that.
20 dresses (summer & winter)
15 coats & jackets
75 tops everything from T shirts to going out tops, a few silk shirts a few running tops etc
50 knitwear items. Jumpers, cardis, sweatshirts, wraps etc.
5 pJ's
25 knickers
10 bras.
Everything is hung on individual hangers (not undies obvs or pJ's) in colour order.
I also have a small holiday drawer with 4 pairs of shorts & a couple of bikinis.

Shoes.. 12 pairs
Boots 8 pairs
Flip flops 3
Trainers. 2
Wellies. 1

ParisJeTAime · 21/02/2021 20:46

@Chickydoo, I also colour order my clothes in my wardrobe. I also have a spreadsheet inventory.

LubaLuca · 21/02/2021 20:48

Lots, too many. Three wardrobe rails plus two drawers and a couple of shelves.

I'm quite old and haven't gained or lost weight in the past 20 years or so, so unless things wear out I can still wear them. I think I've bought one dress in the last 12 months.

OublietteBravo · 21/02/2021 20:50

I don’t live anywhere near the coast - I’m
A looong way inland. We lived in a 3 bed terrace and were looking for a 4/5 bedroom house in the same area. We saw one only 300m away from our previous house which apparently had 7 bedrooms and went to look round out of curiosity as we couldn’t believe it was that big. It was (just about - it’s really a 6 bed) as big as claimed. It was (still is) very granny chic. The owners were downsizing. The husband collected pottery from a particular factory and there were several thousand pieces on display throughout the house (he’d self-published a book on the topic). They were determined it would continue to be a family house and not be sold to a developer and split into flats. We were pretty much the only family who looked around and we could almost afford the asking price. So we sold our house within 6 weeks, had our offer accepted and moved without really thinking about how big a project it was. Which is why it’s taken us nearly 8 years to save enough to actually start sorting it out properly. We might just about finish it before the DC leave home Grin

Chickydoo · 21/02/2021 20:53

@ParisJeTAime my inventory is in my head, however I know exactly what I have, what it cost (if it was worth it)
The colour coding is great isn't it. Easy to select what colours work together & all the white tops are in one place. When they go a bit grey or look a bit meh... they go in the recycling, sometimes I chop them up for cleaning cloths.

AgeLikeWine · 21/02/2021 20:53

I had a proper clear-out during the first lockdown, so I currently own far fewer clothes than I did this time last year. Everything now fits in an Ikea Pax wardrobe and a chest of drawers. I own at least a dozen pairs of jeans, which is probably excessive. Some of them date back to the days of £1=$2 when I used to check-in an empty suitcase on trips to the 🇺🇸 & fill it up at outlet malls.

AudHvamm · 21/02/2021 20:54

More than I need! I love clothes though and they make me very happy. I probably used to spend around £150-200 p/m but with lockdown and being on mat leave I am spending much less atm.

I’ve got a basket with socks/underwear etc, a drawer with pjs (~5), t-shirts (~20), leggings (4), trousers (10), jeans (2). About 3/4 of a wardrobe hanging space - jumpers/cardis (~20), dresses (10), jackets (4) shirts and blouses (~15) But I rotate seasonally so I’ve also got 3 storage bags under the bed with summer coats & clothes and things I am not wearing at the moment due to pregnancy/breastfeeding so double all of these amounts!

I also appreciate a decent shoe/boot (~40) and coats (25-30). This includes all gear for walking etc. Definitely due a clear out but due to aforementioned pregnancy/breastfeeding I am holding off until I have a better idea of body shape and weight.

ParisJeTAime · 21/02/2021 20:57

I love my colour coordinated wardrobe chicky! I only started doing it again recently and it has been great. The only thing is realising how many black, white and navy things I have compared to everything else Blush. I try to stick to a handful of colours anyway though, so everything goes together more or less.

FuckingHateRats · 21/02/2021 21:03

I'm really strict. I have a set amount of hangers and I can only get something if I have a free hanger, or I get rid of something. I can't actually remember the hangers but I reckon it's about 15 'bottom' hangers and 40 tops (blouses, jumpers, t-shirts). This forces me to make sure all my clothes 'work' for me, that they go with each other and that they stay in good nick.

I do have a small drawer for loungewear (three pairs of leggings, one pair of joggers and some boxers for sleeping)

thirstyformore · 21/02/2021 21:09

Wow.....this has made me realise I have far too many clothes!! I reckon I must have 150+ shoes and boots, 30-40 pairs of jeans, 50+ dresses, 50+ tops. Lockdown has not had a good impact on my online clothes shopping

RosesAndHellebores · 21/02/2021 21:12

I have about 9ft of wardrobe:

I work full-time in a professional job;

3 plain black dresses
2 spotted black dresses
1 Green dress
1 navy and green dress
I patterned purple/pink dress
1 claret dress
1 navy dress
3 pairs black trousers
6 tops to go with black trousers
2 smart fitted knitted wool long jacket
1 smart purple knitted wool long jacket
1 Green knitted wool long jacket

Summer:
1 spotted navy dress
3 plain navy dresses
1 pink dress
1 lighter blue dress
1 denim shirt dress
2 Toast linen dresses
1 black and cream skirt and two cream tops
1 navy coatigan
1 oat coatigan
2 navy trousers
4 tops to go with trousers
1 mid blue silk cardigan
1 soft pink fitted cardigan
2/3 hot weather dresses

Casual
1 blue jeans
1 black jeans
1 blue jeggings
1 grey jeggings
3/4 tunic tops
3/4 tops
2 long line sweaters

Numerous scarves/bags
Summer/holiday frocks

1 down coat
1 smart black coat
1 3/4 length casual jacket
1 3/4 length casual waterproof
1 trench coat - Burberry
1 shearling gilet

Evening and occasion
2 evening coats
3 evening dresses
2 smart dress and coat thingies
Black silk evening trousers
Blue silk evening trousers
Couple of wrap evening tops

Shoes
1 long black boots
1 black ankle boots
1 black lace-ups
1 black loafers
1 black courts
1 winey coloured dressy shoes
1 pair tan sandals
1 pair navy ballerinas
1 pair birkies
1 pair pink loafers
1 pair smart navy shoes
1 pair deck shoes
2/3 pairs evening shoes

..and then there are my nice size 12 more formal suits and dresses -that I will never wear again-- :(

I probably buy a couple of summer dresses and a couple of winter dresses, a coat and jacket of some sort each year, probably a pair of winter shoes and pair of summer shoes each year. My boots are 7 years old. I tend to wear things out.

That list feels incredibly anal.
Work stuff is mostly Boden, M&S, bravissimo, white Stuff, Seasalter, Cos, bit of Toast.

Probably spend about £1k per annum not including evening stuff.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 21/02/2021 21:13

I have 130 items of clothing not including underwear, PJs and swimming costumes, and about 20 pairs of footwear. About a quarter of it is over 5 years old ... up to about 20 years old ....and I hate throwing anything away with wear left in it.

I keep a spreadsheet to try to prevent me overbuying. I have summer/winter clothes from hiking to working to ormal evening dress - how do people manage with capsule wardrobes?

BlipBlopYourNipNop · 21/02/2021 21:13

@DDIJ I think I recognise you from another thread.

You left an old life behind and started a new one?

I hope you are safe and well where you are now, it must feel lighter having less physical stuff to worry about.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 21/02/2021 21:13

*formal

JaceLancs · 21/02/2021 21:16

Winter wardrobe
2 pairs dark indigo jeans, 1 black, 1 grey - 6-8 pairs of leggings/treggings
Probably about 6 skirts
20 ish dresses
30 ish jumpers
6 blouses
10-12 cardigans
4 over shirts
Underwear
20+ pairs of boots

katieg03 · 21/02/2021 21:18

Way too many. I have two double built in wardrobes, two sets of drawers. I have a going out section (dresses and occasion stuff) work wear, formal work wear, normal jeans and hoodies and then I have a drawer full of comfies. I have lots of jackets. However twice during these lockdowns I've put 4 black bags of jackets and coats and other clothes to the local homeless place. Shamefully a lot had labels and I realised I need to get a grip of myself and stop buying clothes I don't need. I live in comfies and now the thought of having to get dressed to go to the office kind of gives me the fear.

QueenPaw · 21/02/2021 21:24

Triple wardrobe. At least 70 dresses and 30 pairs of jeans
I'm not counting the rest!

speakout · 21/02/2021 21:24

I own around 10% of what you do OP.

90% of my clothes are from charity shops, I spend £8-10 a month on clothes.
I could afford to spend a great deal more, but have no desire to do so.

ChronicallyCurious · 21/02/2021 21:26

I have a horrific amount of clothes and shoes. We have a dressing room and in there I have two wardrobes, a huge IKEA six set of drawers and a smaller three set of drawers. Inside one of the wardrobes is a smaller four drawer unit. I got rid of 6 bin bags of clothes when we moved here in July and it’s hardly made a dent, I definitely have a serious problem I need to work on. 😂 DP uses half of a wardrobe and that’s it.

ChronicallyCurious · 21/02/2021 21:27

Also I just counted and I have 17 coats. Who needs 17 coats?! I would love someone to come and shake me.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/02/2021 21:27

Oh, I haven't bought a single thing since lockdown except for a pair of black leather house clogs because psychologically I can't work wearing slippers.

MissingLinker · 21/02/2021 21:32

More than @DDIJ but less than pretty much everyone else, I think.

2x smart trousers (for work)
1x blazer jacket (for work)
6x shirts
4x Jumpers
1x Jeans
1x Capri pants (I don't think they actually are Capri pants but that's probably the closest approximation)
1x Jogging bottoms
3x T-shirts
1x skirt
2x dress, one quite formal
1x pair of shorts
2x bras
Many X socks and pants. I don't buy them, I'm fairly sure they procreate. Plus, pair of tights.
Running kit (sports leggings, sports bra, t shirt, trainers)
Swimming costume.
Shoes: 1 smart pair for work, 1 pair of DMs, 1 pair of walking boots.
1 smart coat
1 anorak.

That looks like quite a lot written out but I think that's all of it.

MagdasMadHouse · 21/02/2021 21:33

3 pairs of trainers (probably more in loft)
2 pairs black work shoes
2 pairs of high heels, (probably more in loft)

5 vest tops 3 black, 1 navy, 1 white
Thermal vest
Long sleeved thermal top
A couple of pairs of tights, one sparkly
A couple of 'body's in white and beige

1 Uniform top (it's quick drying so I am meant to wash it overnight but I am trying to order another!)
4 Uniform trousers (but only 2 that fit)
2 black cardigans
1 black t shirt, 1 white t shirt, 5 others in colours/slogans
1 long sleeved black top, 1 long sleeved white top

im5050 · 21/02/2021 21:52

Oh god don’t ask 😂
I have double fitted wardrobe so two 4 mirror doors full with clothes
all nicely organised with my every day stuff on one side and my summer stuff , dresses handbags on the other .
I have a few pairs of boots and trainers that I wear regularly in the bottom of the wardrobe
I actually have the hangers that drop down so I can fit more in 😂
I also have 2 x 2 large mirror type chest of drawers with 3 big drawers and two small drawers each
I keep underwear , leggings tops and running / sports stuff in these
I have a console mirror table in between where I keep jewellery and stuff on

DH has a large walk in cupboard which I’m slowly using 😂
In the cupboard I have a over the door shoe rack that’s full of shoes and trainer and shoes and 4 drawers in the cupboard that’s full of holiday stuff like bikinis sarongs beach wear and stuff .
DH has 4 large drawers and two rails with his clothes on 😂
Also my coats are in the downstairs under the stairs cupboard

I have a least 10 coats mainly puffa north face G star
One classic black fitted pure wool one for anything like a funeral or something serious 😂

No idea how many pairs of shoes boots and trainers I have probably 30 plus at least. Plus holiday flip flops and Sandals. Some I’ve only worn once or twice a year when on holiday so I keep for the following years .
Handbags far to many
1 very expensive mulberry Bayswater
The rest are cheap longchamps and Mia Tui bags but I have an awful lot of them .
Most years I do clear out stuff and my niece gets a lot of virtually new clothes
Despite all my clothes I tend to mainly wear leggings ( Spanx or sport gym types ones ) trainers and t-shirts 😂 especially since last year March 2020

Bluntness100 · 21/02/2021 22:11

Far too many to be honest, three wardrobes, two chest of drawers, and one section of a wardrobe that’s all shelved. I really should have a full
