How many clothes do you own?

I understand that this is potentially a flammable topic and I wouldn't expect everyone to feel comfortable answering. But I'm genuinely interested (nosy) what people's wardrobes look like, and what kind of a budget do you allow yourself? I'm enjoying a lot of the "what are you wearing today" threads but I don't have much to contribute as I wear quite a small rotation of clothes really...

Personally, I have 7 shelves in a small walk-in wardrobe and their total height is about 9 feet - this includes about 6 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of joggers/casual trousers, 10 jumpers, 7 dresses, 3 skirts and a too-large a number of t-shirts, tops and sweatshirts, plus sportswear, PJs and some scarves. I also have a hanging rack which is about 4 feet long and that's rammed full. Underwear is in a small dresser by my bed. Coats and jackets are downstairs (I have 8) as are shoes apart from non-seasonal and occasion shoes which are in the loft. I have about 20 pairs of shoes. The loft also houses a 35-litre box of non-seasonal clothes.
I feel like I have a lot but I have friends who have much, much more. I used to but 2-3 items a month maybe but I'm trying to bring that down to 1 max a month as I don't need that much but I do like shopping. I used to spend £100-200 a month but I'm also trying to being that down. It's a one in, one out -policy from now on though. I donate stuff I no longer want.

S&B is a terrible influence though!

Clothes not too bad, shoes and boots are in danger of becoming a problem. Grin

AmberItsACertainty · 21/02/2021 14:20

you never see friends even on FaceTime or zoom - which would force most people to build some variety into their wardrobe

Only if someone dresses for other people.

I'm someone who dresses only for myself. I don't care if someone I see regularly happens to often see me in the same outfit. Which is entirely possible considering I wear only about 5% of my wardrobe during any period of time.

DDIJ in my fantasy life I'd be able to fit all my possessions in my car. I totally understand the minimalist thing. I'm currently decluttering in general because I had the thought of how nice it would be to simply own less.

ParisJeTAime · 21/02/2021 14:24

Specifics:

8 x dresses
5 x skirts
9 x tshirts
2 x blouses / shirts
3 x jumpers
2 x cardis
3 x jeans
2 x jackets
4 x coats
6 x boots; all different types
3 x shoes
2 x trainers
2 x sandals

Total: 51 (I think!) including shoes and coats.

This is about right for me and I'm happy with it. It fits into a small wardrobe, plus a shoe rack for the shoes and boots and some hooks for the coats.

My budget....hmmmm I can get a bit spendy around clothes, but I only keep things which are perfect and fit with my wardrobe. So I would say I average about £150 per month. I'm taking a shopping break for a while though, as I am happy with my wardrobe. I have mended or gotten rid of anything with holes in it and I think I'm pretty confident there are no 'gaps' in my wardrobe now until at least summertime. If anything, looking at that list, I could maybe get rid of some boots! But I don't particularly want to.

I am on the plus size what are you wearing today thread and you do not need a new outfit every day of the week at all. Quite the opposite! I keep finding new ways to wear what I already have. I'm sure the other one is the same.

1990s · 21/02/2021 14:25

@DDIJ

Is this a dislike of clothing in general or necessary/enforced frugality?

Neither. I like clothes but I have no use for a variety of outfits because I wouldn't have occasion to wear them. I've made a conscious decision to reduce the number of items I own. I can now fit all my clothes toiletries and towel into a small pack.

That is SO interesting what you said about zoom. I have nobody to video call but even if I had I would not feel the need to have different clothes. I would not have even thought of that.

Does living this way involve a lot of washing? I think it must as you only have two sets of underwear...
MindBodyChocolate · 21/02/2021 14:28

My clothes are stored around the house according to season, clothes for hiking, pyjamas etc. Added together I have approximately one wardrobe, 6 drawers, 5 coats and maybe 15 pairs of shoes/boots.

It doesn’t feel like too much and I’m looking for some new summer clothes. I used to be a size 22 and hated summer clothes but am now losing - down to a 16 and aiming for a 12/14 - and am trying to work out my summer style.

ParisJeTAime · 21/02/2021 14:29

I did live for a while in another city abroad, which I had to fly to, so I had to take a smallish suitcase and that was it. It was fine actually, but winters were harder and it meant a lot of washing, as I wore lots of layers at once.

In my imagination, if I lived somewhere warm, I'd waft about in flipflops and a couple of maxi dresses, but the reality might be different.

Like a pp, we have young dcs and try to get outdoors as much as we can, so an outfit often doesn't last a day as it gets muddy.

TheChosenTwo · 21/02/2021 14:40

Just sorted and organised my wardrobes and drawers so I have a vague idea.
30ish long skirts, jeans, trousers. (Altogether, not each!)
15 jumpers, 5 cardigans.
40 dresses (20 for work, the rest are going out dresses and there are 2 bridesmaids dresses in there waiting for recycling).
2 tracksuits (for slobbing around the house, lockdown purchases although I do actually work out of the house!)
3 workout leggings, 6 workout T-shirts, 2 sweatshirts to throw over the top.
4 vest tops.
8 pairs of black leggings.
4 T-shirt’s.
No idea on the underwear drawer, I just know there’s lots of everything!
Footwear - around 50 pairs all in.
Coats and jackets - 6.
Summer holiday clothes are in a hand luggage case in the loft.
I don’t think that’s too bad actually, it’s one wide wardrobe and 4 drawers.

Crayfishforyou · 21/02/2021 14:42

I have too fucking many Blush
I have a 2 full wardrobes, about 10 coats and jackets, I don’t know how many shoes but it’s A LOT. 20 pairs of jeans? Ish? A vintage steamer trunk full of jumpers
8 skirts or thereabouts
10 pairs of trousers
10 shirts
8 dresses
4 pairs of leggings
8 bras including a sports and a ballet one.
A half size drawer full of t shirts
And an attic rammed with a load my vintage stuff.

I love clothes. I bloody love them.
I’m having a non spend 2021 though. Mainly because i can’t fit any more clothes into the house. BlushBlushBlush

My budget always varied. I love Zara in the sale, vintage shops, charity shops, vintage weigh n pays and ASOS. I have a few Chanel and Dior accessories.

cheeseybean · 21/02/2021 14:47

5 double wardrobes of hanging clothes, 8 wide drawers of folded clothes Blush and so many shoes. 18 handbags. And I've just counted 45 swimsuits/bikinis Grin oh god lord I'm ridiculous I'm sorry.
I had a large spare room converted to a dressing room and I still find I have to rotate seasonal things to fit it all in.

Kimye4eva · 21/02/2021 14:49

Sometimes I look at the storage in other peoples houses and wonder how the hell they manage. But then again some of my clothes I have had for a very, very long time so maybe others are better at getting rid of stuff.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 21/02/2021 14:49

Does living this way involve a lot of washing? I think it must as you only have two sets of underwear...

That was my thoughts exactly. I can understand wanting to have a minimal wardrobe, though it wouldn't be my thing, but to limit yourself to two pairs of knickers and one bra, so you have to wash them every day seems overkill.

TableNiner · 21/02/2021 14:59

32 cardigans, I love them
41 good tops plus a few old favourites or not quite right that I can't seem to get rid of
24 bottoms - jeans/cords/jeggings plus one pair of shorts
9 jumpers
26 pairs of shoes
2 dresses for occasionwear only

Most of my clothes go together so there are almost endless permutations of the same uniform. I very rarely wear the same outfit twice. I really don't need more clothes, hence my no spend thread.

Apart from the shoes, it all fits in a child's wardrobe from IKEA and two drawers - not got loads of space.

I find clothes spending quickly adds up so although I don't buy particularly expensive clothes the value of my current wardrobe must be around £5k.

I have one standard sized clothes drawer of soft clothes (mixture lounge wear and sports wear).

One standard sized drawer of underwear.

One shelf of trousers (four pairs of jeans, four or five other trousers).

One 3ft wardrobe hanging space of dresses, blouses, jumpers skirts, and the same of coats and jackets.

AuldFox · 21/02/2021 15:26

Hundreds and hundreds.
I have my own very large dressing room and it is packed. I do cull regularly though.

OublietteBravo · 21/02/2021 15:33

Too many Blush. I love clothes (and I earn enough to be able to buy pretty much anything I want). Plus I’ve been more or less the same size for the past 30 years and I’m useless at getting rid of things. We’re about to have serious building work done, so I really need to tackle my wardrobes and reach a more manageable level. Oh, and stop buying yet more clothes.

puppychaos · 21/02/2021 15:33

6 pairs of dungarees, 5 button up shirts, 3 T-shirt's, 2 leggings, 3 blazers, 1 jogging bottoms, 1 pair of jeans, 2 matching suit jacket + trousers, 2 cardis + 1 hoodie. I have three pairs of shoes: a pair of docs, a pair of converse and a pair of walking boots. I also have one good, thick, waterproof jacket. I think that's everything!

Everything fits on a small clothes rail + one drawer. I used to buy clothes all the time but I'm much happier this way!

ExcusesAndAccusations · 21/02/2021 15:39

Having been roughly the same size for thirty years (now one size larger alas), and being a sucker for pretty things, bargains and charity shops, I have a lot of clothes. Not crazy crazy amounts, but a lot - about four wardrobe rails and three chests of drawers. Pleasingly, DD is now the right size to wear and enjoy a lot of my nineteen nineties treasures, which is giving a lot of fun to both of us, so yah boo sucks to the minimalists.

squeekums · 21/02/2021 15:52

A lot
essentially 2 double door wardrobes but they packed in a way where a 3rd wardrobe is in there too
Ive lost count on everything. Somethings ive had since a teen and they fit, some memories/nostalgia
heaps new to suit changing tastes and a bit more cash flow
i do buy stuff just cos

dont ask about shoes, its just as many lol

nzeire · 21/02/2021 16:57

I LOVE beautiful clothes! Even from a young age, i was obsessed! Not lots of cheap stuff, but gorgeous small(ish) designer stuff... kept loads of it for years thinking my daughter may like, but, a, she won’t and b, she won’t fit! So I have sold, gifted and thrown loads over the past couple of years and now have a nice manageable double wardrobe and one set of drawers. I dislike shoes generally, so never been a problem! Have boots, sneakers, birks, flip flops. Couple of pairs of sandals that work well with dresses.
When I buy now, I sell a few things, to make room and to pay for it. My hobby is scouring the sites for a bargain! I live in nz so catch the end of season European sales :)

HeronLanyon · 21/02/2021 17:03

I have fewer clothes than many. Definitely fewer shoes and coats. Don’t enjoy shopping for clothes and as lawyer do need court stuff which reduces weekday variety. I do however have what I consider to be ample.
Remember a friend looking into my wardrobe small walk-in cupboard with large chest of drawers and full rack and she said ‘but where are all your clothes?’ I just said ‘well they’re there in front of you !!’ Often think of that when I open the door.

lindyloo57 · 21/02/2021 17:48

3 double wardrobes, one single two chest drawers, I have the spare room as a dressing room, I am trying to buy less, I am selling some things on ebay, last year spent half I normally spend in a year, hopefully will keep this up for this year.

MaybeWeShouldGoToEastbourne · 21/02/2021 18:05

@DDIJ Sounds like freedom to me!

cheezy · 21/02/2021 18:14

But @DDIJ apart from thongs and flip flops, what do you actually wear? Confused What are you wearing today??
