1980s Impulse fragrance

I'm aware that this sounds ridiculous but I've got a real craving to smell an Impulse body spray that I used to use in the 1980s.

It may have been a special edition, would definitely have been around 1981 or 82. It was in a can that was yellow and purple. Can anyone help with a name please?

I've contacted Unilever but they need more info, so not very helpful.

Obviously they probably don't still make it, but to find something similar would be great.

I remember one called 'Oriental Dream' that was in a purple can, but that would have been from 1986 at the earliest, so probably not the one.

I've just googled "impulse spray 1980s" and loads of images come up (click on images tab). It might be worth you having a scroll through to find the one you remember?

Bee0808 · 21/02/2021 15:01

Jeunesse??

JaneJeffer · 21/02/2021 15:36

I used to love Gypsy but that was white, brown and yellow as far as I remember. I'd like to get some again. I also remember the one you mean but can't remember the name.

Ntwa · 21/02/2021 15:39

I loved the orange one, smelt oddly like cigars! Nicer though!!

JaneJeffer · 21/02/2021 15:49

Any of these? Maybe it was Gypsy. I remembered the colours wrong!

And how to spell it Grin

FleetwoodRaincoat · 21/02/2021 15:58

Thanks all. I've Googled it, but can't seem to find the right one. I remember that everyone used to have the brown one (first one in that pic).

From what I can remember, the yellow kind of merged into purple at the top, or the other way round. Maybe I should just go into a shop after lockdown and try them all out Grin

And now you've got me wanting my old one and malibu musk.. (diff make) Loved that spray!!

DailyCandy · 21/02/2021 17:57

You're reminding me of the funk in the locker room at school. Feeling a tightness in my chest. Also getting flashbacks of very puffy hairsprayed fringes

GreenClock · 21/02/2021 18:05

I used to love Captivation. Pink bottle.

StepOutOfLine · 21/02/2021 18:52

@GreenClock

I used to love Captivation. Pink bottle.
Captivation is me au-pairing in Spain in 1987 💕
EventuallyDeleted · 21/02/2021 19:03

Hint of Musk was obligatory at my school.

HopingForABetterYear · 21/02/2021 21:32

Was it free spirit?

PajamasnoDramas · 22/02/2021 00:33

Impressions was my fave, back around ‘87.

JMAngel1 · 22/02/2021 03:40

On wow, Gypsy was my favourite.
I used to save my pocket money to buy it (along with Constance Carroll Juicy Fruit Lip gloss roller!)
Looking back, that was the start of my beauty obsession Grin

BusterGonad · 22/02/2021 04:14

I liked Vanila Kisses. White matt bottle with butterflies. A bit later, probably mid 90s.

IndecentCakes · 22/02/2021 04:47

Free Spirit was early 90's I think. 13 and drenched in that and Charlie Red!

Gingernaut · 22/02/2021 05:01

I miss Free Spirit. ☹

Malin52 · 22/02/2021 05:24

Chic by Impulse was my 1980s bag. Red can. Oh god I can smell it now. I felt impossibly French. I also remember the TV ad was a little bit risqué but also involved the model spraying herself dangerously close to her 'womanly parts'. My close reading of Mizz magazine meant I was acutely aware that this was a recipie for a thrush disaster.

Welshwhisperer · 22/02/2021 06:21

Was it Impulse Dynamique?

JMAngel1 · 22/02/2021 08:01

@Malin52
Oooh Mizz - I lusted after that magazine but my mum wouldn't let me get it. I had to settle for Girl. I also wanted Just Seventeen but mum took the title literally and said I couldn't get it until I was 17. By 17, I'd moved onto More and Cosmo Grin

GreenClock · 22/02/2021 08:38

Haha yes - Just 17 was a misnomer really - we’d all moved up to Cosmo and More by then.

I remember the Impulse ad with the well-dressed man chasing a woman up am escalator to give her flowers. Would seem a bit twee and odd to young women and teens now I think, but I found it terribly glam.
