Considering Rhinoplasty

So I had a consultation yesterday for Rhinoplasty - I've wanted a nose job since I was 15 and at the age of 31 I am now in a position where I am able to afford one. I previously had filler in my nose which fixed my side profile, but it obviously did not really do much to narrow my wide nose which is my main area of concern.

I keep going back and forth with my decision on whether to go ahead - the surgeon I saw was great, very realistic in terms of a results and he also uses the Ultrasonic technique as opposed to the 'hammer and chisel' technique, which apparently means less bruising and a quicker recovery.

I've watched so many nose job vlogs so I feel like I sort of know what to expect in the recovery process, but a few have mentioned other side effects that worry me such as hair loss after the surgery (although temporary), spider veins becoming visible on the nose & trouble breathing.

I am also very aware that there is a 10% chance with this surgery that a revision might be needed, regardless of how skilled the surgeon is.

I would love to hear from anyone that's had it done - both good and bad experiences - particularly if you've had the Ultrasonic rhinoplasty! Aware everyone's experience is different, but I find comfort in speaking to other people who have gone through with it!

@BasinHaircut I think it’s fine to exempt yourself for a bit, to be honest. It might be voluntary but it’s still face surgery.

Feels good to have mine done. The roots were terrible!

Latest update is that I still have my bruises but they’re obviously better. I keep waking up swollen at the top of my nose - into the corners of my eyes. And I pulled some sutures out that hadn’t dissolved. I know, I know! But they looked awful and I had to meet my new landlady. Haven’t started using the kelocote yet as it hasn’t yet arrived.

Hope you’re all well! Smile

BasinHaircut · 23/04/2021 16:47

Don’t be pulling your stitches out!

Funnily enough I’ve found a non-dissolvable stitch today that they have missed when the others were removed. It’s a bit sore so going to see how it goes over the weekend and if needed call in Monday about getting seen to have it taken out before my next scheduled appt.

HappyEm81 · 30/04/2021 22:36

@BasinHaircut how're things going? Do you have much swelling now? Are you pleased with your results so far?

BasinHaircut · 01/05/2021 08:08

Morning @HappyEm81 things are going well. I’m 5 weeks post-op today and feeling good.

Any noticeable (to me) swelling is now limited to the tip and columella, although it is resolving slowly. I’d say it all feels about 60-70% normal now when I move my nose/face.

Really pleased with my results so far. I was getting a bit concerned about the columella shape as it’s protruding below my nose more than I’d like, but it is going down so I am confident now that it’s just swelling and I just need to be patient!

Did you book your consultation?

namechange202086 · 01/05/2021 12:09

That's great all going well @BasinHaircut . Can you see the changes despite the swelling?

I just want mine over with, so excited to get it done.

HappyEm81 · 01/05/2021 13:39

@BasinHaircut it's great to hear that you're healing well and are pleased with the results.

@namechange202086 when are you having yours done?

I'm still researching surgeons. Spent quite a bit of time researching a particular surgeon in London, but I've ruled London based surgeons out now. I don't want to drive into London nor do I want to face trains or tubes post op and for follow ups. I've found one surgeon in Cambridge I'm interested in. It's a few months wait for a consultation with him, though.

How many different surgeons did you see for consultations?

namechange202086 · 01/05/2021 14:36

I only spoke to one surgeon @HappyEm81 . I was happy with reviews he had. I get it done in the summer so a few months to go.

BasinHaircut · 01/05/2021 15:28

Yes the changes are very apparent and have been since day one.

I also only saw one surgeon but I was very happy with her after my consultation so just went for it.

She was someone my friend found when researching surgeons for her daughter’s rhinoplasty so I sort of cheated and had someone else do all of the research for me Grin

bimbimbap · 08/05/2021 23:14

I’m now less than a month away from my surgery date so starting to think about what to prep (get fillers dissolved, get MRSA test) and pack. My surgery is on a Sunday and I’ll be back at work (from home) the following Monday after a week off - am I likely to still have tape on at this point?

@bimbimbap I was in a cast/splint for the first week and then taped for another week so IME yes. But I believe @ABitOfAShitShow had her cast off after a week and only taped at night after that.

Prep-wise I have mentioned earlier in the thread lots of stuff so have a read back over my
posts if you can. I’m sure there is loads I don’t remember already!

Are you getting excited?

@ABitOfAShitShow how are you?

ABitOfAShitShow · 09/05/2021 23:03

@BasinHaircut Hey! All good here apart from some ongoing congestion. I’m using Sudafed a few times a day which works quite well as a temporary measure. How are you?

BasinHaircut · 10/05/2021 19:37

@ABitOfAShitShow all good here too. It’s weird my nose is becoming more mobile and as it does, it’s feeling sore in different places.

ABitOfAShitShow · 10/05/2021 20:27

@BasinHaircut My nose has been more sore in the last week than at any point to date! It’s weird how these things happen as you heal.

Glad you’re doing well. I’ve loved having this thread throughout the process. Smile

RaeCJ82 · 12/05/2021 17:24

So I had my surgery yesterday. It involved hump removal and spreader grafts and alar batten grafts as I was getting some valve issues where the sides of my nose were collapsing in on deep exhale.
I've been taking codeine for the past day but am trying to cope just with paracetamol now as I know codeine can seriously bung you up.
I have dissolvable packing in my nose so am having to mouth breathe which is awful and when I swallow I'm getting this weird vacuum/suction feeling in my throat, I think because my nose isn't open to equalise the pressure.
Sleeping is so difficult with the mouth breathing. I can start using saline drops tomorrow so hoping they will start to dissolve the packaging.
Hope everyone is doing well.

namechange202086 · 12/05/2021 17:33

That's exciting @RaeCJ82 hope the next few days aren't too tough. Did you go home the same day?

7 weeks to go for me.

RaeCJ82 · 13/05/2021 17:29

@namechange202086 No I stayed in overnight. Today I feel a bit like I've been hit by a bus. My nose packing isn't dissolving yet and I have a lot of dried blood. My left eye has swelled up and is quite uncomfortable.
I snored all last night because of having to sleep on my back and kept waking myself up.

BasinHaircut · 13/05/2021 19:30

The mouth breathing when sleeping and swallowing is unreal. I sympathise totally! Although mine came out the following morning so not as bad, although as soon as it was removed it was replaced by swelling anyway. Hopefully it will get better for you over the next few days. Did they say how long until the packing dissolves?

If you feel like you have been hit by a bus maybe take the codine? Might hung you up a bit (it did me) but it will help. It’s only for a few days.

ABitOfAShitShow · 13/05/2021 20:04

@RaeCJ82 How exciting! You’ll be so glad you did it.

The mouth breathing is killer. I had no packing but, like Basin, I was so swollen that I couldn’t breathe through my nose anyway. It will get better. Promise!

RaeCJ82 · 13/05/2021 20:07

I've been taking the codeine but stopped this morning as I remember how I felt after taking it when I had a c section.
It's the weird suctioning feeling that's the worst when I swallow. I think cos my nose is packed so the pressure can't equalise. It creates a sort of vacuum.
It seems that for some people it dissolves in days but I had to have some grafts put in so I think he really jammed a load up there to keep things stable. I have just been able to taste the soup that I've eaten so hopefully there's some movement up there.

BasinHaircut · 15/05/2021 08:09

How are you feeling today @RaeCJ82?

RaeCJ82 · 16/05/2021 06:40

Not too bad thanks @BasinHaircut. Just need this packing to dissolve and hopefully I'll start feeling better. Swelling has gone done around my eyes and they are a lovely shade of yellow now.

sah168 · 04/06/2021 14:18

Hi all, so I had my surgery yesterday and got back home today. I had packing in for about 18 hours and it was removed this morning - nose feels super blocked / swollen so it’s mouth breathing only as expected. I actually got a bit sick from the anaesthesia (think I ate too soon after the op) but other than that all went really well. Bruising has come up nicely, one eye more than the other - both are also quite watery. I’m trying not to complain about anything as it’s all self inflicted but I think the mouth breathing when trying to sleep is really going to get to me as I’m such a light sleeper anyway Grin

Prettypennies · 04/06/2021 16:15

Wow amazing! Did they get a picture of your nose once the surgery finished?

sah168 · 04/06/2021 16:22

@Prettypennies yes, my surgeon showed me the before and after photos from the operating table yesterday and I’m so happy with the result - it takes away the anxiety of not knowing what it looks like with this cast on for the next week!
