Midlife Fashion Crisis: Man Requires Help

DaDaDa · 02/11/2007 15:17

I haven't bought any new clothes (other than a pair of Gap jeans) in the year since DS was born. I'm starting look a bit scruffy, and it's ages since DW said anything complimentary as I'm wearing the same things over and over. Boo hoo.

I want to make the effort but hate shopping, and feel like I should change things a bit now I'm a mature man and Dad not an indie kid

Should I ditch the Converse and smarten up? What do you think a bloke in his mid 30's should wear?

hmmmmmmmm

my dh is mid thirties and still wears converse

but then he works in a Uni so still fancies himself as a bit of a student

although the student union has stopped handing him fliers as he walks across campus - he is starting to feel old har har har

do you mean work or play?

BurrrrrrrrrrningNbg · 02/11/2007 15:20

lol

nothing worng with a bit of converse IMO but wear it well IYSWIM
Good pair of jeans, smart long sleeved tops, nice jacket etc.

Whats your build like?

CountessDracula · 02/11/2007 15:21

Nothing wrong with converse - my dh is 41 and wears them

What sort of things do you normally wear? I would say don't undergo any radical mid life crisisey change eg start wearing really smart things all the time if you are a jeans and converse sort of person!

Instead try replacing some of your basics, get some really good tshirts and a couple of smarter shirts maybe, a couple of well-cut pairs of jeans (take dw shopping if she will do it!) and maybe some smarter flat-fronted narrowish trousers - Gap have great ones atm.

CountessDracula · 02/11/2007 15:22

dh has had lots of compliments about things he has bought from monsoon men recently. I think they are designed well for the more ..ahem.. mature man, without being dagtastic.

nailpolish · 02/11/2007 15:22

jeans are definitey fine - just dont get ripped or halfway down your arse

nice pair of dark brown boots

shirt - but not tucked in

not round neck t shirts with logos, but polo shirts, v neck t shirt and jumper

my dh recently bought a linen blazer and i surprisingly LOVE it

gap i think it was

youd think he looked like man from del monte but nope

CountessDracula · 02/11/2007 15:24

dh got a great cord jacket (first ever but looks great and is fine this year!) from Uniqlo for peanuts

BurrrrrrrrrrningNbg · 02/11/2007 15:24

bite the bullet and go shopping with your DW. Let her pick out bits for you.

Its just one day thats all. Have a nice lunch etc.

Please try and look like you are enjoying it though

normabutty · 02/11/2007 15:25

Yes, take your dw with you.

Zara do some nice smart casual trousers for men.

DaDaDa · 02/11/2007 15:27

I'm nudging 6 foot, 11.5 stone.

I can't seem to find jeans to fit. Can't be doing with the skinny legged look or heavy prewash, I just want a decent pair of bootcut dark blue jeans. Can't bloody find any.

Don't have to be smart to work, so I don't have any 'special' clothes. Usually wear jeans, Clarks shoes/converse, shirt and v neck. Yawwwn.

Heh, I think I've got that cord jacket from Uniqlo. I'm a bit too fond of Uniqlo according to my DW. Mega cheap and no logos which have always bugged me.

We used to shop together but since DS came along there's not time.

I've been told I was borderline too old for Converse

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 02/11/2007 15:32

jeans??

DaDaDa · 02/11/2007 15:34

Thanks CD, they're a bit too pale around the crotch I think it's the horror of '80's snow-wash holding me back.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 02/11/2007 15:34

who told you were too old for converse? thats a load of rubbish

nailpolish · 02/11/2007 15:36

do you have a levi shop nearby?

Beenleigh · 02/11/2007 15:37

How about some long sleeved tops like Nbg suggested. Hennes have some really stripey nice ones atm with no logos, also they have some really nice shirts.
How oold are you? I always though 30 something may be too old, but the goal posts shift when you get there. OH still wears them and looks good at 35, maybe we'll reassess at 40. Perhaps the difference is that pre 30 they needed to be dirty and scruffy, and post 30 they need to be clean.
Jans wise, how about M & S autograph?

DaDaDa · 02/11/2007 15:38

Actually it was an irritating comedy actress whose bum may or may not have looked big at the time.

I can see her point though. There's an age where it starts to look a bit daft - 50 year old blokes in skategear etc.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 02/11/2007 15:38

my dh goes to out of town designer discount places, gap and levi shops

he says hes not ready for m&s and clarks

CountessDracula · 02/11/2007 15:39

these are a bit whitey aroudn the knees but not tooooo bad

IKWYM I only buy dark black jeans atm as can't bear all this faded stuff

nailpolish · 02/11/2007 15:39

mid 30's is far far away from 50's! give yourslef a bit of credit!

Heated · 02/11/2007 15:40

I get my dh's jeans (6ft 1, rugby type) from TKMAXX. Not ususally a haunt of mine, but it does good designer jeans that fit well, look good and last.

DaDaDa · 02/11/2007 15:41

Clarks are classic mod shoes really. Only buy the desert boots or 'pasties'.

OP posts:
Beenleigh · 02/11/2007 15:41

I agree cd, all that nasty nasty cheap looking bleaching, whiskering and destroying on denim is to be avoided at ALL costs!!
