Wedding Dress Advice!

Hello all!

My first ever post here so be gentle 😅

I had my first DD in December 2020. I have now booked my registry office wedding to my DP for September 2021 (it will be a small affair - apparently it classes as a micro wedding 😂) and so I have naturally started hunting for something to wear. I am currently 30 years old, a size 16/18, 5’9 and have MASSIVE boobies (34K) but some of that will be due to me currently breast feeding. My happy comfortable place is size 12 and that is my goal for the year.

I have found this dress that ticks all my boxes for the wedding. It only goes up to a size 14. I can’t decide if I should take a punt and buy it in the knowledge I don’t currently fit into it, and it might not suit/ fit my boobs even it if I do ever fit into it (I am planning on losing weight but easier said then done right?)

www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/shop/product/self-portrait/grosgrain-trimmed-guipure-lace-midi-dress/1217019

Can I have some advise on what I should do? Buy it and use it as inspiration to lose weight? Wait until closer to the time and see if something else might have caught my eye by then? Don’t buy it is bloody awful and will never fit anyone with anything over a D cup? 😂

Thanks in advance lovely people 😁

Speaking as a 34JJ woman I would be concerned about the high neck. It's a lovely dress and I can see why you love it but this is one of the endlessly unfair things in life.

I find designer clothes are even less forgiving in size terms than high street because usually they don't really want anyone over a 6 wearing them.

If you suit high neck styles then it's a possibility but it would be a shame to put yourself under such pressure when something else lovely might come along.

KTD27 · 12/02/2021 07:47

Agree and agree with the PP. Are you usually ample of chest breastfeeding aside? If so I’d give that one a swerve. I’m a 34JJ usually and that high neck would make me look matronly. Also wouldn’t fit across my chest with the sizing of things so I’d never try!

KTD27 · 12/02/2021 07:52

Edit to say it’s a gorgeous gorgeous dress so if you reckon it would normally be your style I’d go for it.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 12/02/2021 07:52

It's lovely but if I were ordering that, I'd need to order at least 2 sizes bigger to fit over my chest due to the stiff fabric (i'm "only" a 34GG, so smaller than you).

I don't think ordering a 14 when you're a 12 with huge boobs would work.

Plus I think there would be too much going on up top and not the most flattering.

PurpleDaisies · 12/02/2021 07:55

Gorgeous dress but anything with buttons over the boobs is a nightmare if you’ve got larger than average ones. I would leave it and keep looking.

Bigcheesey · 12/02/2021 08:09

😭😭😭

You all speak so much sense! 😂 If I’m being sensible I do agree. It’s such a curse sometimes having a massive chest and being a bit chunky but funky 😂 I do hope the bazookas will deflate a bit before my actual wedding day but I doubt I’ll ever be able to fit into anything that doesn’t have industrial style support 🤗

Thank you lovely ladies!

If it was just chunky and funky I’d say go for it, but as a fellow disproportionately well boobed woman, I know it’s the buttons at the top that will pull out of shape. You have lovely taste though-it’s such a stunning dress.

Arriettyborrower · 12/02/2021 08:14

Oh it’s gorgeous! But, yeah, agree with the others, I have bigger boobs and that high neck doesn’t work. Plus if you are, and will still be, breastfeeding, your boobs are likely to remain bigger until you stop.

Sorry!

OneForTheJourney · 12/02/2021 08:39

I'm currently a 32jj and I know something with that higher neck would make me feel big and wide at the top (if it fit, which I doubt it would to get honest).

superram · 12/02/2021 08:47

I agree, the neckline is wrong. Also I lost no weight until I stopped breastfeeding so I’d hold off until much nearer the wedding-don’t out that pressure on yourself.

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 12/02/2021 08:48

Definite no from me OP.

Sadly, that is a dress for the norkless. And the very slim (the exposed midriff would not be kind to any of us mere mortals).

If you post a brief and a budget I'm sure people on here will find you some alternatives!

Congrats on your DD and your wedding ☺️.

SacreBleeeurgh · 12/02/2021 09:04

Another doomsayer here I’m afraid - I tend to have to go up one size in self-portrait (though they’re not as teeny tiny sizing wise as a lot of designer brands) - but they are definitely cut small across the chest. I’m a 32DD size 10-12 and buy a 12 in SP but can only wear their stuff when I’m not feeding.

ChateauMargaux · 12/02/2021 09:25

It is a beautiful dress, the back is especially gorgeous. Keep the images, sketch what kind of neckline would suit you and take the pictures, your sketches and yourself to a dressmaker.

Thank you everyone!

I am rubbish at shopping for myself and especially online so if there are any super sleuths out there who love this sort of thing please hunt away for a more fitting dress!

A quick description of what I’m after....

I’m not dead set on anything and the dress I’ve posted is the one that’s sung to me most (bloody typical) but I would like some sort of midi dress in white/ similar would be great if it incorporated short lace sleeves for my September wedding. I’m keen not to accentuate my boobs and bum and I don’t like things that are too clingy. I have a budget of ideally up to £500.

If you can think of any other info that might be helpful please ask away!

Ah that is very good to know before I considered having a moment of madness and buying it anyway.

I hate boobies 😂

Gosh that’s an idea! I’m off to google dressmakers now! (And figure out what sort of neckline would work 🤔)

It is a really beautiful dress. Stunning. Ask for the measurement across the bust of the actual dress in a 14 and then compare that to other things you have in a rigid fabric. Lace does have some slight give compared to other fabrics, so although this is lined, linings can be altered. Allow some room to move, an inch or two extra.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/02/2021 09:40

I love the neckline and would wear a neckline like that - I am a 28H bra.

candycane222 · 12/02/2021 10:17

Hmmm going against the (gros)grain here and saying I don't really like the dress - kind of reminds me of a dollly dress from somewhere way back in the 20th century and might have a similar look on anyone who isn't a stick? It feel very fussy to me.

Suggest you post a link to a dress shapd that you own and like and/or you know flatters you, and set the mumsnet sleuths to work...

candycane222 · 12/02/2021 10:21

You might well still be feeding dd in September, agree with pp who say don't put pressure on yourself (breastfeeding uses to make me SO hungry) and find something that makes you look lovely now 🙂

Normaigai · 12/02/2021 10:28

Another one saying actually I would wear that neckline - because it isn't solid. I wouldn't wear solid material that high necked but I would wear the overlay type neckline and it can work.

But I agree, a 14 would be really risky in that type of material and with the buttons.

candycane222 · 12/02/2021 10:28

Nb don't take my style advice too seriously. I have no dress sense whatsoever and my most stylish oufit probably looks like anyone else's lockdown wear....

botemp · 12/02/2021 10:33

I wouldn't be looking at Self Portrait OP, they're really narrow up top and have very little give. I have a slightly wide rib cage but am otherwise small and I stand no chance of ever fitting into their lace dresses in my normal size, two or three sizes up at minimum and then the rest fits terrible. I'd suggest having a look at Zimmerman dresses, they're a bit more relaxed and have room up top and tend to have more chest flattering silhouettes.

StrangerHereMyself · 12/02/2021 10:35

If it was an cheap eBay bargain then I’d say go for it. Or if you had a mad budget of five grand so this was chicken feed.

But if it’s 380 quid and nearly 80% of your maximum budget then it makes no sense to buy something that’s such a big risk when you won’t know your body shape for another six months.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/02/2021 12:21

OP you might like some of the dresses in Ivy and Oak. They have stopped shipping to the UK now because of brexit but may start shipping again in a few months. Have a look at the website. They do a wrap dress that might be better for you if you are breastfeeding.
