How tight should jeans be?

Odd question I know, but I instinctively go for a size 18 as I have a respectable stomach, but this pair I have just tried on feel a little big.

I put them on and thought they were super comfy, but then thought that actually I had to cinch in the belt a little so they didn't gape, and there is a little excess fabric around the lower stomach.

They're not skinny jeans, mom/straight.

Should jeans be tight or looser/comfy? I can't try them on in store obviously but am debating whether I need a small size. 🤔

They need to be tight when I buy them and just after washing them or they are falling down by the end of the first day.

Mom style are more likely to stay up over skinny if they are a bit loose.

It depends. Sometimes you get a pouch of ‘Willy’ fabric if they’re too loose. Not good.

As tight as you want them to be. My Mom jeans fit at the top (TBH probably a bit tight thanks to lockdown) but are loose on the leg.
