DH wants to buy me Uggs. Are they still ‘a thing’? Other suggestions welcomed.

Just that really.
DH wants to splash some cash having brought COVID home and grounded me. I am still off unwell after 5 weeks and in need of cheer.
My skin is like sandpaper as a result so dealing with that could be an option. Jewellery is a possibility.
Make me a wish list.

Have you worn them before? I ask because I had some years ago and couldn't manage, they were too flat and unsupportive and hurt my tendons.
Most people find them very comfortable, it was just an expensive lesson for me.
I would highly recommend slathering yourself in E45 cream if your skin is very dry.
I know it doesn't sound very pampering but it is effective!

Ginfilledcats · 09/02/2021 10:45

They're very comfortable and cosy, but not at all in fashion now, if you care about that. However I have some ugh slippers which are slide on, closed toe, open back and they are the most deliciously comfy things ever.

XiCi · 09/02/2021 10:50

Actually they are back in fashion now. The minis are being worn by Kendall, Bella, Serena, Hayley et al and are very much back on trend. They are really cosy on the feet if you're in need of some tlc.

NellietheNumpty · 09/02/2021 10:54

@M0rT No I have never had any before. I have had Nuggs that is imitation ones about 10 years ago. I loved them but left them in another decade. He wants to buy something expensive as a treat and thought of them.
I will try E45 but actually I think it will just take time after a prolonged illness. We have some.
@Ginfilledcats that is useful to know. I am not fussed about fashion and couldn’t wear them to work, when I eventually return. The slippers sound a great recommendation but are so expensive.

I have outdoor ones and indoor ones! Love them.

M0rT · 09/02/2021 11:04

If the imitation ones were comfortable for you then the originals should be fine, and they are supposed to be well made for the price.
Definitely try the E45 and as much water as you can for a week. I know what you mean about time though, sometimes the body just needs to recover before it can redirect resources to skin/hair/nails etc.
My DSis had long Covid from March 2020 and is finally nearly recovered. There has been some permanent damage done but it is treatable and her energy levels are back up now, hair and skin healthy again. Just to reassure you, it might feel neverending but there will be a day you feel normal again.

ElspethFlashman · 09/02/2021 11:51

God I love Uggs. I have an ancient pair which are still OK for indoors and they're heaven.

I also buy the leather boots they have, because they're fleece lined and toasty. They might suit you better for work? They don't feel the same, they feel like proper leather boots, just warmer. I have a pair called Simmins but have had others in the past.

ElspethFlashman · 09/02/2021 11:54

If your skin is rough, Cerave have a smoothing cleanser which gets great reviews. It has salacylic acid in it but I don't think it's just for spotty skin.

Actually all the cerave stuff is great. Not expensive though so not much of a treat!

Snofla4 · 09/02/2021 11:56

I had Ugg’s years ago I loved them I would not buy them now though. I probably would try Dr Martins or I few quite a few pair of boots from Moda in pelle.

An excellent hand cream is body shop hand hemp OP. Body cream I use Astral it’s a classic and I have used it since I was a child.

Loveablers · 09/02/2021 14:10

There’s many more cruelty free comfortable footwear you could opt for instead!

NellietheNumpty · 09/02/2021 14:51

@Loveablers Can you give a recommendation? Actually why are they not cruelty free. I thought Uggs were wooly in the same way jumpers are.
Thanks for all the suggestions, do keep them coming.

Op - they're made with Shearling aka the wool is still attached to the skin. Animals don't tend to survive having no skin.

Daisy829 · 09/02/2021 15:33

Oh no I never knew about Ugg’s being so made like that. I’ve had them for the past few years but not this year as they don’t seem as good. I’ll defo not buy them again.

Xyzzzzz · 09/02/2021 15:34

I love mine. Wear them often.

@fridgepants Haha, good point. To be honest I wasn’t expecting such a generous offer and enjoying mulling it over after such much time thinking of difficult things and being unwell.
I like these
www.draper-of-glastonbury.com/collections/womens-sheepskin-boots/products/claire
I am making progress looking into ethical sheepskin. It seems to be a biproduct of the meat industry. It is better to use it than bury it, seems to be the general idea. That it is unless you are ethically opposed to animal products.

I wouldn't wear them outside (definitely designed as slippers, Australians laugh at us for wearing them as shoes), but they have been an absolute essential since I've been WfH.

Kenworthington · 09/02/2021 16:40

They’re massively back in fashion. I’ve got some ultra minis and they are LUSH

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 09/02/2021 16:52

A U.K. alternative to ugh as sheepland based in Scotland I think, I wear them as slippers but also pop to the shops in them

I just felt INCREDIBLY old reading that –literally no idea who any of those people might be Grin

They’re sheepskin, aren’t they? So the clue is in the name Smile
windowstothesoul · 09/02/2021 17:06

Go for it - lots of different types - I wear them as slippers but also quick errands - most things non work - they have been in fashion and out and mine stayed the course. Was precious for first few years now got mud on them etc -

I like the navy ones -

Current ones 5 years old.

I don't think you will regret if you have eyed them for a while, but if not convinced maybe other winter boots would suit better?

NellietheNumpty · 09/02/2021 17:16

@windowstothesoul I haven’t been eyeing them. DH just wanted to give a luxurious gift. Thanks for all the advice. Navy sounds my kind of thing.
@QueenOfCakeandCoffee I will look at these alternatives too.

@QueenOfCakeandCoffee. I can’t find these. Any chance of a link?
