What skirt can I wear?

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 06/02/2021 22:23

I am 5ft3, just over 9st and pear shaped. Usually size 8-10. I have my summer style OK but winter spring I am just in jeans and tops. If like to be a little more adventurous but no idea what type of skirts to wear. In the summer I wear a lot of long or midi dresses which suit me well. TIA.

Same in winter but heavier fabrics (wool, cord, velvet, denim).

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 06/02/2021 23:17

Thank you! Love velvet but hard to find. However it's skirts in interested in more than dresses this time of year tho I know dresses so handy to sort the whole outfit in one go.

I’m bigger than you (5ft 6 and just over ten stone, 10/12) and I like an A-line mini-ish skirt at this time of year. I have a couple of leather ones which were expensive but cost per wear excellent investments - I did try a pleather one first to see if I liked it. I wear them with 100 denier opaque tights, fine-knit crew neck or polo neck jumpers, and on my feet black leather trainers, Chelsea boots, or DM monkey boots.

I love a midi dress or skirt in summer, but find them much harder to wear in winter when tights are necessary.

(I am pretty much always wearing trousers for working at home in my chilly kitchen at the moment, tbh.)

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 06/02/2021 23:31

Like that look Judy, but unsure if can pull it off as a bit of a pear! Would you link or tell me where you buy? And also what black trainers? Thank you!

I have black Stan Smiths, Continental 80s, and Veja Esplars.

I have this Whistles skirt in dark green:

And this Jigsaw one:

Sorry for the awful links.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 07/02/2021 07:38

I'm a pear too.

I prefer a line, gathered, not pencil style. I have chunky legs so l prefer midi. If you have good legs get them out.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 07/02/2021 08:38

Thanks both, and for the links. Love the idea of green. I think my legs are probably OK, but slightly above the knee more flattering than on. What is gathered a-line?

I think you could try a tube pencil, but make sure it's a relaxed fit and ideally has a split. Fabrics like jersey, wool and ribbed work well and are less formal looking. Jersey is also easy to tailor the length

Here's a nice velvet tube skirt.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 07/02/2021 09:16

Thanks again. Floofy that's a lovely skirt. I don't have boots like that, I'm trying to work out do would I have to buy a whole new outfit!

Judy, the jigsaw is like the Ted Baker I linked. My worry is that it will ride up, my waist is very small compared to my bum so getting that right will be important! Obviously don't want it tight at the back.

@HeyGirlHeyBoy glad you started this thread. I'm shorter than you (sob) but also love wearing skirts and always looking for casual ones to replace jeans.
At the moment winter is mainly denim A-Line with thick black tights and DMs (I'm working from home but no one sees my bottom half).
@Judystilldreamsofhorses I often come across you on threads and think we have very similar style.
However I'm a size 6-8 with an hour glass figure, i.e. big boobs for a small girl, as a young friend put it Biscuit This is NOT good as I can often look like I'm trying to look sexy when I am most emphatically not. But I can't downplay it with slouchy jumpers as then I look tent-like.
How do you downplay the sexiness of leather?
Making a huge assumption that you want to downplay the sexiness.

Octopus37 · 07/02/2021 16:52

@HeyGirlHeyBoy I tend to go for skirts which are either slightly A-line or ruffled, same applies to dresses, as I am pear shaped, although I'm a dress size bigger than you.
Something like this, although I wouldn't need the tall length

I also bought this dress the other day which works quite well, maybe cause of the shoulder detail.

I terms of tops to wear with skirts, I am loving bodysuits cause you get a smooth line. Happy shopping

Standrewsschool · 07/02/2021 16:59

If your pear, wear a-line skirts. Avoid pleats at the hip, at this accentuates the hips.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 07/02/2021 22:54

Jaypers octopus you must have better legs (and arse!) than me Grin Gorgeous dress tho! And thanks for skirt link. Good to get the Aline tip, that's a great start. It would be very daring for me to get a leather skirt but hey I might go mad. To the pp who is hourglass, that's a stunning figure but understand you don't want things too form fitting. I shall update if I go ahead and appreciate any and all suggestions.

OK love the green Judy but it's only there in a size 4! Such a pity and can't see similar elsewhere. So I think I might try the Ted Baker in wine. Going to measure waist and hips and hope I get the size right. Can't stand getting it wrong and sending it back etc. Can I wear navy with wine or no? I have more navy than black..

popularinthe80s · 08/02/2021 07:46

@HeyGirlHeyBoy, please do update.
I think wine and navy are a lovely combo, I wear this myself.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 08/02/2021 08:32

OK thanks Smile I like the look on the model too but that would be braver again!

Octopus37 · 08/02/2021 15:37

Think wine and navy together are lovely and will look great.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/02/2021 20:02

@popularinthe80s I am not at all busty, quite a pear really, so I am not sure how helpful I can be! I am a big fan of high/low - sequinned skirt with trainers type stuff, which I think tones down looking sexy or like you are trying too hard. (Similarly I always wear red lipstick, but I never really bother with eyes beyond mascara.)

With my leather skirts I always wear flat shoes - I don’t own anything with a heel - and very opaque tights. I like fitted crew-neck jumpers, or polo necks, but these are probably no use for someone more blessed in the chest department! Could you do a tucked in shirt/blouse with the top button open? I really like the big frilly collars at the moment, would something like that work? Or more of a boat/slash neck in a fluffy fabric like mohair maybe? I kind of think of the skirts like I do a pair of jeans, if that makes sense, rather than something “fancy”.

@HeyGirlHeyBoy I think navy and wine will be lovely together!

lockdownalli · 08/02/2021 20:10

Just popping in to say I have that Whistles velvet tube skirt and it is really lovely.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 08/02/2021 21:55

Oh great thank you. I may go mad and post a pic. Will order both and keep fingers crossed!
