Molecules 01 - what am I not smelling?

I've read many a time on S&B that this is one of those 'getting stopped in the street' perfumes, so treated myself to a bottle and ... seriously underwhelmed! I can barely smell it on me. Sometimes I get a whiff of it on a top I've worn, but it's barely there. DP hasn't mentioned it at all, so I don't think it's just me.

Any there are hints or tips for making it more effective, such as layering it with another scent? Or am I just one of those unfortunates who it doesn't work for?

What is it they say? If you can smell your own perfume on yourself you’re wearing too much/it’s too strong....something along those lines.
You shouldn’t be able to smell your perfume shortly after applying it due to olfactory adaptation.

Have you asked your husband ?

geillisduncan · 06/02/2021 22:21

I love it and wear it all the time. Never smell it on myself though apart from when I apply it. Think it smells amazing in other people so I'm hoping I smell good too.

MrsS92 · 06/02/2021 22:38

I think some people are sensitive to the ingredient in it and can smell it strongly and others can’t.
I want to try it but I have quite a few full bottles of perfume as I’ve not been wearing it. I love Juliette has a gun, not a perfume which I think is a similar idea to the molecules 01.

Tuscadero · 07/02/2021 00:01

I can't smell it on myself either, I believe this is quite common with this particular perfume, but other people can smell it on me and it gets commented on a lot.

Tuscadero · 07/02/2021 00:02

I can smell it on a coat/scarf days later though.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/02/2021 00:15

I used to work in the same building as a woman who wore it. One day I went to her floor and asked her what it was, then immediately bought some for myself. I could only really ever smell it when I took the clothes I had been wearing with it out of the washing machine! (It’s just Iso E Super which you can buy for pennies on eBay.)

Cakemonger · 07/02/2021 00:31

It didn't really smell of anything on me. A vague paper-y type smell but that was it Hmm

Wishingwell75 · 07/02/2021 07:41

It's so weird! I absolutely love it but like others and indeed you Op, are saying it is elusive bordering on outright rude! Sometimes it wants to be smelled and sometimes it doesn't. But then you can smell it on your clothes the next day. Other people are equally polarised - I've had people stop me in shops (in the old days obvs) and ask about it, twice I have been asked if it's D&G light blue, which I don't think has the iso super E ingredient but could and only one man recognise and appreciate it. My own dp refuses to believe it has any aroma at all, even in the bottle. Sorry for the lengthy response but I really do love it and the second molecular perfume. Have to admit to only buying the travel sizes of both from Escentuals and since then the dupes in abundance from perfume parlour.Grin

A boss of mine wore this and I loved it on her, always wanted to try it but I love smelling perfume on myself, it's why I wear it, so not splashing out if I can't smell it myself Grin

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 07/02/2021 09:29

Its an odd smell. I do get stopped by people and asked about it though.

Maybe it depends on your body chemistry?

Lampan · 07/02/2021 09:30

I have it. I did once get one of the reactions people talk about, where a woman in a shop stopped me to ask what it was and said how much she loved it. I can only smell it faintly on myself. I think it’s OK but definitely have other perfumes I prefer.

sleepwhenidie · 07/02/2021 09:36

My friend has a theory that gay men and women smell it but most straight men don’t. Sounds weird but have to admit that is actually my experience of wearing it for years too - not sure DH ever registers it but I regularly get asked by other women and when men have commented, in 90% of cases they have been gay. I can’t smell it on myself either, like others, only on scarves, knitwear etc afterwards. I usually layer it but don’t think that affects whether others notice it.

Littlebendytoe · 07/02/2021 11:08

I bought a decant on ebay (well, hopefully it's not water) Can smell it's woody-ness but I wore it to work waiting for someone to comment about how gorgeous i smelt... Nobody did 😅

XiCi · 07/02/2021 12:16

I can smell it when its first applied and get the odd whiff of it during the day. I'm not sure i like it though and won't repurchase. It smells like 4711 cologne but not as nice

littleburn · 07/02/2021 12:41

Thank you for all of the replies! I guess in the current situation there are fewer opportunities for others to smell it and comment. It's just so odd not to be able to smell it myself, even when I first spray it on! Like a PP mentioned, I'm starting to think it may be my body chemistry but reacting to it.

I've not asked DP directly as I was expecting him to comment on it. I will ask next time we're together. Will also ask DS for his view, although at 7 I'm not expecting a particularly sophisticated reply Grin

It could be that he can’t actually smell it!

Molecule 01 is Iso E Super basically. Some people are anosmic to it. To me it smells like a woody, fresh unisex.

QueenPawPaws · 07/02/2021 21:59

I get a slight scent of pencil shavings. My colleague (who dislikes nearly all perfume) made a beeline for me to ask what it was because she loved it Confused

StepOutOfLine · 07/02/2021 22:25

I can't smell it. Many can't.
I went to the perfume exhibition at Somerset House and it was one of the "gamechangers" on show because of its quirky aspect.
