Question for Lucy and Yak owners...

Procrastatron · 06/02/2021 08:55

I have embraced dungarees this lockdown and have finally ordered and received my first pair of Lucy and Yak in corduroy original style... ❤️❤️❤️. Genuinely surprised as I have previously avoided them given my desirable proportions of small boobs, mum tum and wobbly bum.
Now I have my eye on a cotton pair for summer and I am not sure which ones will be lighter, the Umi in cotton or the Luna? I like both styles and know the Umi already works for me so really I’m looking for the lightest summer weight fabric as I already have denim dungarees from fat face for those cooler summer days. Both are out of stock so will order as soon as they come in.

So much waffle... summary:
Cotton Umi or Luna for super hot days?

Love your summary!

I can't help you. I only have one pair and it's their corduroy - can't remember which style. I love them but can't wear then often enough because I bought black and I have dogs.

Good luck!

Procrastatron · 06/02/2021 12:50

Oh that’s such a shame. Thank you for replying though.

I don't have Luna because they're really low cut at the side and that's where I carry my weight, so I can't directly compare the fabric.

But L&Y have really active Facebook groups where people with massive collections just talk about dungarees all day. If you posted this question there you'd get loads of responses from people who own both.

smeerf · 06/02/2021 12:55

Also there's so much buying and selling on those pages, chances are you could pick up some now rather than waiting for them to come back in stock online

GeidiPrimes · 06/02/2021 13:00

Umi are much lighter fabric than the original corduroy, (I ordered them for summer). I don't have any Lunas to compare though.

Procrastatron · 06/02/2021 13:12

Thank you both.
I’m aware of the Facebook groups but for some reason I’m a bit scared of looking/joining in case it is all a bit hardcore dungaree for me.
I actually like the idea of a lower side as I have a bit of a waist but I’m nervous of the side pockets adding volume to places with enough volume already. Gah
But it’s very helpful to know that cotton Umi are a good summer weight.

I am hardcore dungaree, and I wouldn't join those groups - I get the impression a lot of drama plays out in them.

Zengarden001 · 06/02/2021 14:13

Slightly different comment - I recently bought a pair of the original cord dungarees from L&Y and I was disappointed by how baggy they went after one wear (by the time I took off tags, gah!) - they became a whole dress size looser on me and no amount of tightening the shoulders seems to help. I'm a bit miffed!

Procrastatron · 06/02/2021 14:21

@Zengarden001 this is interesting as mine are a touch more snug that I had expected so I would want this to a point. I had read that they can shrink a bit on first wash too. Maybe they will resolve themselves to the ideal fit?

OP posts:
smeerf · 06/02/2021 21:29

@Zengarden001 Wash them at 40 and they'll shrink a bit - there is about a half a size difference between my pairs depending on how they've been washed. I wash them all on a delicates setting now and air dry.

Procrastatron · 17/02/2021 11:29

@Zengarden001 I thought I’d report back. Mine also got very baggy on the first day I wore them and like you I was a bit gutted. I chucked them in the laundry knowing that my husband would wash them at 40 but that I had some plausible deniability if it went wrong. So far today they are fitting perfectly and not stretching out again.

I had a pair of Umis and they were nice and lightweight, but still may have been too warm for very hot weather. I wore them a lot on the school run, in summer time, but then would change when I got home as it got hotter. Nice for spring and early autumn. I also haven't tried the Lunas to compare though.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2021 12:56

The Lunas and the Umis are the same fabric, or they were when I ordered. The description usually says 'medium weight twill' or lighter weight twill' or something like that
I sent the Umi back as the style and fabric didn't suit me. Love the Lunas, and have several. The style suits me.

I didn't like the printed fabric at all.

Zengarden001 · 17/02/2021 13:20

@Procrastatron interesting! Thanks for the update. I've washed mine at 30 and they are still very baggy. I'll try and 40 wash next I think, otherwise they now completely swamp me.

Motherrunner1 · 17/02/2021 13:28

Not trying to hijack but are they true to size? ive had my eye on them for a while

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2021 14:11

Read the sizing guide for them @Motherrunner1 as they don't look right if a bit snug. I'm an 8 and wear size S.

BallsToYouSue · 17/02/2021 14:35

Like a pp, I hate them snug, so I sized up with my pairs. I have had the corduroy ones and the umis.

Procrastatron · 17/02/2021 15:28

I did actually join one of those Facebook groups that buy and sell Lucy and Yak clothes and there is a lot of chat about measurements. From what I can gather there have been some changes recently and the way they present sizes is different, and possibly some of the proportions have changed too. Apparently the long ones should be a consideration for anyone with a long body even if you don’t have long legs 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’ve got two pairs now, and both are 10/S in terms of new sizing. I had to return a pair of 12 lunas I tried as I had room for a cat in the legs. I am a solid 10 in the world of vanity sizing or an M in Uniqlo and I wouldn’t go bigger than a (new) 10. I am a smidge shy of 5 foot 6, fairly standard proportions but small boobs and am probably max height for the regular length. My hip measurement (probably the most important one) is bang on for the small. I hope that helps @Motherrunner1
@KirstenBlest I think the lunas will be my favourite, what colours do you have and which do you enjoy wearing the most? I have black at the mo, could embrace orange 😱. Why does buying orange dungarees feel so much more out there than buying an orange dress?
As an aside I picked up some Alexa trousers too and love them.

BallsToYouSue · 17/02/2021 15:33

Oh interesting re new sizing! I haven't bought from there in a while. I am on the tall side and wear tall sizes in most things anyway, so my L&Ys were the tall ones.

mewkins · 17/02/2021 15:40

I have two pairs of the Umi ones that I bought a couple of years ago. I am a size 10 and the small are perfect. They come up quite short - I'm 5ft 8 and they are sort of ankle length- perfect for rolling up. They are good for spring and summer but not the hottest summer days.... like anything that covers your legs. They are a sort of slub cotton fabric that get softer the more you wash it. I think they are softer and less structured than the luna. The black ones and petrol have faded nicely. They are very casual and comfortable to wear and look great with trainers or sandals. Hope that helps.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2021 17:08

@Procrastatron, I'm a small 8 (sometimes 6 in M&S) but the S in Luna is nicely loose on me.The Umi was too baggy, if that helps. I'm not petite but definitely not tall.

I have blue, pink and yellow Lunas and other dungarees that are very similar in vibrant patterned cotton.
I have other clothing from L&Y.

I wear them with DM style boots (Solovairs) and trainers.

Pink dungarees are more full on than a pink dress but i find the mad vibrant dungarees easier to wear than a dress in a similar print.
I think the dungarees sort of make a 'I don't give a monkeys, I'm on holiday'' attitude.

Ellpellwood · 17/02/2021 18:19

I have 2 pairs of Umis and I agree they're lightweight but I think would be uncomfortable in very hot weather. They look best on me with 3/4 sleeved tops and a bit of ankle showing above trainers. Sandals looked odd!

PenguinsCantFly · 28/03/2021 11:49

Jumping in here as just about to order my first pair from Lucy and Yak - wondering whether anyone has a referral code so you can earn some Yak Tokens from my order Smile
