Yves St Laurent Y Perfume

Can anyone tell me has it been discontinued. It was a perfume (may have been unisex) but all that is advertised is a new one called Y for men!

Cannot see the women's one on the YSL site.

I shall be pissed off if it is the case that it is no more. Must I be surrounded by sickly sweet scents for demented 4 year olds????

It was discontinued years ago. It has been revived a couple of times in their special La Collection range and is still available. Look for a bottle with a cube top.

I also love Y and have plenty of the original as well as a La Collection bottle, and can vouch for it.

Auldspinster · 04/02/2021 19:20

I've got the original. Have you tried other chypres?

Deathraystare · 04/02/2021 19:40

@Auldspinster

Yes they are very much my thing - hence my comment about all the sickly sweet shite out there!!!

@Haffiana , @Auldspinster** - Thanks both! (still pissed off though!)

I love this perfume- my first serious boyfriend bought it for me and my mum (whilst I was on holiday) caned through it leaving just a dribble...

I saw it a while back but was worried it had been reformulated.

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 04/02/2021 23:07

Forgot to add- looks like John Lewis stock it but the bottle has changed.

Auldspinster · 04/02/2021 23:17

I'm a chypre and fougere fan so feel your pain.

Haffiana · 04/02/2021 23:26

Ooh yes - John Lewis do indeed stock it. It IS reformulated, because of the change in regulations on oakmoss in perfumes, but it smells very, very close to the original.

XingMing · 05/02/2021 09:38

Oooh... happy memories. It's a favourite, or was; the new formulation is a decent approximation but it doesn't have quite the sharpness the original had. I bought my first in TJ Maxx in 1982, for $5! Sadly, I didn't realise how much I'd love it, and it was all gone when I went back for more.

MissBattleaxe · 05/02/2021 11:51

I love Y and you can still get it in the cube bottles mentioned above but if you do, get two. You could also try Miss Dior Originale (definitely not the modern pink ones) which is also a very green chypre. I also recommend Papillon Dryad which smells very vintage and is a beautiful modern green chypre.

I'm 50 and I often feel very left out by today's new launches which are largely pointed at under 27s and even under 17s.

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 06/02/2021 00:28

I also wear Miss Dior Originale - so I favour perfumes in this family.

Any other suggestions for near dupes? Smile

XingMing · 06/02/2021 13:00

Heeley Chypre 21 isn't a dupe, but it's a lovely chypre, especially in autumn. I am ekeing out a sample.

MissBattleaxe · 06/02/2021 15:10

@PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit if you like Dior Originale, you might also like:

Estee Lauder Aliage
Gres Cabochard
Sisley Eau de Soir
4160 Tuesdays Paris 1949
Floral Street Chypre Sublime (good rose/green chypre)
Balmain Vent Vert
Carven Ma Griffe
Private Collection Estee Lauder ( not to be confused with THE private collection, this is just called Private Collection).

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 06/02/2021 19:42

Thank-you - lots to explore Smile

I also love Mitsouko which is another chypre

Auldspinster · 08/02/2021 22:07

Mitsouko was my gateway into chypre scents, bought it at the tender age of 23.

Deathraystare · 09/02/2021 08:04

@MissBattleaxe

Hey Chypre Sister!

I have tried most that you mention and love them but not tried the 4160 thingy. Miss Dior was bought constantly as was MItsouko (my absolute fave).

The Estee Lauder perfumes well I have Azuree, and Private Collection, not sure I bought Alliage though I have done so before. These were my Christmas Prezzies to myself!!!

Have not tried Papillon Dryad. Off to search that and whether John Lewis still do the 'proper' 'Y'

OP posts:
Deathraystare · 09/02/2021 08:10

Well I will have to wait for 'Y; at John Lewis. They will contact me when it is available.

Omg I was a rive gauche fan 30 years ago 🤣

Deathraystare · 09/02/2021 09:13

*@Monty27 *

Yes I had that too! But in the end hated the smell of the 'gas' used in the spray. Ditto Havok by Mary Quant (remember that?)

OP posts:
Monty27 · 09/02/2021 09:36

@Deathraystare I remember going off it big stylee and gave some of it away but I don't remember havok
Did you do the Estée Lauder one youth dew

MissBattleaxe · 09/02/2021 10:20

Two more mossy greens:

Karen Timson Fine Fragrance Hermia. Karen is a small business so you'd be supporting a very good bijoux perfume house! You can also buy a discovery set from here www.karentimson.co.uk/product/discovery-box/

Also Lancome Magie Noire if you haven't tried it already.

Deathraystare · 10/02/2021 16:13

@Monty27

Yes to EL Youth Dew but cold not wear it now. A group of very frumpy looking women used to get on my bus and reeked of it. Yes I know I sound snobby but it really put me off!

@MissBattleaxe

Yes I loved Lancome Magie Noire! It was one of my first perfumes I think!

OP posts:
Monty27 · 11/02/2021 07:35

@Deathraystarei loved magie noir lancome
Then there was Georgio Beverley hills 😲
I went off that too 😃

MissBattleaxe · 11/02/2021 10:37

I didn't appreciate Magie Noire when it first came out, but I'd love a bottle now that I'm a chypre fiend.

Deathraystare · 11/02/2021 16:10

Then there was Georgio Beverley hills

@Monty27 Noooooo! Don't mention it! You couldn't open a magazine without being smothered in a perfume strip, in fact you couldn't walk in a room with a magazine without being felled!

OP posts:
Monty27 · 12/02/2021 06:25

That's the one @Deathraystare
I was very young to be fair 😃
