hello im naturally light brown but for years have been getting full head 2 blonde to 1 caramel highlights.

my roots are horrendous due to lockdown and iv always fancied trying plum. can anyone advise if i could just get a home dye from the supermarket and bung it on?

or do i go for brown first?

im looking for the colour in the photo attached, not a pale purple or similar.

I really wouldn't attempt this at home on your own!

I went from highlighted blonde to a dark red and the amount of work that went into it was crazy! You can't just put a colour straight on top.

You could try Adore direct dyes. A bit like crazy colour but come in natural shades.
They are vegetable based dyes so no peroxide or developer which most supermarket or boots type dyes will have.

Ideally you would have to put a red on the blonde bits to colour correct, to "fill in" the colour that the blonde has stripped out, and so any brown dyes don't go green. Yellow + brown = swamp

Then a brown dye colour to your natural shade.

Then your chosen plum

OR....
If you don't mind having variations in the plum colour, lighter plum, possibly pink or purple tones on the highlights. Put on a plum dye where you are now

I would not put a dye with developer over already processed hair without hairdressing experience.
And I would not put even vegetable dyes in a dark colour over blonde highlights unless I was very sure I didn't want to return to blonde hair. Its a very expensive and time consuming grow out and fix.

I'm worried it may go bright purple if you put box dye on it. Do a strand test.

im so glad i asked here instead of just going for it Grin

think il just need to live with the roots until lockdown over. pink hair and my work wouldnt go well.

thanks everyone!
