I cannot get the right copper colour hair dye!!
I've recently tried one version which was a bit too light and orange and another which was a bit too dark and came out more burgundy than copper although now its fading its getting closer to the colour I wanted!
So I have a box of the too light and a box of the too dark - can I mix them up in the hope that I'll get the colour I want?
Is it that simple?

God no!! Can you post a pic of the colour you’re looking for?

Allbymyself1 · 04/02/2021 10:20

Oh no! Have I suggested something terrible? It made perfect sense to me!!!! 😂

I've started using e-salon. They are really good at sorting out exactly the colour you want.

FaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaBlah · 04/02/2021 11:03

If you mix essentially orange and dark red you’re just going to get a nasty brown

Minky37 · 04/02/2021 13:39

Watching as I was going to do this too 😂😂😂

Allbymyself1 · 04/02/2021 13:52

This is the colour I want!
I've tried every Copper home hair dye and none of them have come close! I either go orange or burgundy!

So FaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaBlah, would I be better off mixing the dark red with a blonde dye?
Or would that end up pink?

Blonde "dye" is stripping colour from your hair ( bleaching it out)

Red is depositing, which is why it fads so quickly. Red is the worst.

You could bleach your hair, so it's more porous and then the red has dryer more thirsty hair to go into, but this will still often be uneven as the length of the hair is drier and more damaged. And gets tricky with the roots.

To maintain red you have to deposit colour often = messy hassle. You could use a coloured depositing shampoo or semi permanent dye.

I did have quite a nice strawberry blonde for a bit, it's quite luminous and not at all natural. Think it was nice and easy perm. It's a bleach with a toner. You want to go for warm/ golden avoid ash.

What did you use ?

Allbymyself1 · 04/02/2021 19:18

The one I've just used was Nice and Easy permanent 8R Light Auburn but it turned out several shades darker than the darkest result on the box - literally a dark burgundy. Before that I'd tried the Nice and Easy 8WR Golden Auburn but that was far too light and faded too quickly so I bleached my hair lighter (not peroxide blonde) thinking it would help keep the colour longer and get a deeper Copper colour so then applied the Light Auburn but that hasn't worked either!
The closest I've got was a Superdrug permanent called Copper Gold but that lasted one wash (the online reviews agree that it doesn't hold) and was still not as coppery as I wanted.

Sorry to derail the thread but @Throughabushbackwards can you tell us your experience of using E-Salon and what the experience was like.

Throughabushbackwards · 04/02/2021 22:35

Of course!

The website takes you through a series of questions that determines what colour you need, my first colour came back exactly as I wanted it (blonde with a hint of strawberry tones). You can adjust it each time, slightly lighter or darker as you like. I got a lightener in the summer that went with my normal colour to give my hair a bit of a blonde lift.

The colour comes in two containers that you mix together and apply. They give you two sets of gloves, colour guard cream (for your ears etc.) and colour removal wipes.

I've had about 6 colours from them now, I've subscribed to have them come every 8 weeks. It feels as good as a salon colour to me, you don't get that straw-like brittle feeling that box colours give as they age.

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/02/2021 22:37

Henna?

Ruddyfedup · 04/02/2021 22:39

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 05/02/2021 02:11

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 05/02/2021 02:16

Or the Rich Honey one they do.

mrsjg · 05/02/2021 08:17

@Throughabushbackwards Thanks for your reply. E-salon keeps popping up on my Instagram feed and I am tempted to use them.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 05/02/2021 08:26

No!

Don't do henna. You will be stuck with it, it sort of bonds somehow with the hair shaft and you'll never quite be rid of it and it prevents hair dye from working properly in the future.

I have not tried e salon, but I'm tempted. been faffing around with Josh Wood, but am put off by them now, and a mate said that the John Frieda she's been using has a weird foam consistency.

I miss my lovely hairdresser.

Allbymyself1 · 05/02/2021 08:45

Tried the Casting colours too!
I'm looking for a vibrant Copper but not bright orange. But every time I've tried it's either too light, satsuma orange or too red! That's why I was asking about mixing colours, I thought if I mixed one that was too light with one that was too dark I might get the right colour. Garner Nutrisse used to do one called Natural Light Red 7.34 but that seems to have been discontinued?

Following with interest as that's the colour I'm trying to get!

Nyctophyllia · 05/02/2021 16:20

Have you tried L'Oréal Dublin? Its perfect, I used colour remover on my old dye first

I was worried it looked too orange on the box...does it not turn out that bright?
Nyctophyllia · 07/02/2021 08:13

It's not as scary as it looks on the box, this is it on me

Try Avon light mahogany

Notonthestairs · 07/02/2021 10:37

That's a lovely colour Nyctophyllia.

I cancelled my pre Christmas appointment for highlights - really wish I hadn't as my hair is now a sludgey grey blonde.

Off the back of this thread I've ordered colour and highlights kit from E salon - will report back.

WrongKindOfFace · 07/02/2021 11:33

I often mix two shades together and it’s fine. Only the same brand though.
