Help needed with next sizing

Name changed as been discussing this in real life

Have gained a fair amount of weight over last year and now clothes don’t fit, hadn’t realised cos I been living in leggings and pjs!

I need jeans, jumpers, cardis, tops...

Measured myself with a measuring tape (and damn near had a heart attack!) and according to the measurements I’m a size 24 having started the year a 16-18!

I don’t think that’s accurate but I want to make sure I order things that fit and are comfy.

I put on old jeans (size 16 primark) the other day and could hardly button the damn things up!

But I honestly don’t think I’m as big as a 24 I think I’m more a 20?

So thought I’d ask you experts here.

I’m 5’2” measurements Came up as 47” waist, same hips and 45” bust.

I generally prefer a straight or bootcut fit I don’t think skinnies suit me at all (regardless of size even when I was slim they looked odd on me cos I’m short)

I ordered these trousers from next back just before start of lockdown:

In size 18, and they fit fine apart from being a bit long (common problem for me) a teeny bit neat on bloated days at the moment but basically fine.

That’s why I’m thinking 20 is probably more accurate.

But...what do you guys think?

Ok out of curiosity just measured myself again and 45” waist today I think I was bloated the other day. Just want to make sure I get a good fit as returns etc would be very tricky for me.

If you go on next website they have size charts you can compare against for most items. So difficult buying on line

SnBDunce · 27/01/2021 13:47

Popped these in a 22R in basket. Inside leg 28.5” I seem to have a short torso proportionally speaking.

Yea I’ve looked at the size charts but according to those I may be as big as 26! Which I don’t think is right

I posted here to get guidance from people who regularly buy from next on their sizing.

Wow ok sure someone will be more helpful than me then

picklemewalnuts · 27/01/2021 14:39

I think you just have to order things in several sizes. Keep what fits.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 27/01/2021 14:41

I think you are maybe restricting replies by confining it to Next, as it isn't somewhere I regularly shop. But FWIW, I think you can do worse than Tu jeans, they do a girlfriend jean, and a bootcut one from memory, nice and stretchy and not too low cut. I would guesstimate that a size 22 would be ok for you. I think they are around the £18 mark, from memory.

BornIn78 · 27/01/2021 14:41

Just order in several different sizes and see what fits.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 27/01/2021 14:44

If you are set on Next, then stretchy obs gives you more flexibilty than a stiff denim, particularly if you might fall between sizes. I suspect I have convinced myself I am thinner than I am because of stretchy jeans win-win Grin

Next sizing for women stopped being consistent a while ago, so I stopped buying much. Plus quality went down.
Cross reference their size guide and reviews and if you still arn't sure then buy more than one size.

SnBDunce · 27/01/2021 15:18

Well I’ve bitten the bullet and following advice from customer service ordered in different sizes but also ordered belts so if a little on the large side I can belt them up.

They said I can return if needed from home (I can’t get out at the moment) so... due to arrive tomorrow afternoon.

Very nervous. I’m rubbish at this stuff.

Has to be next due to which delivery courier they use. Everyone else that delivers clothes to my address use Hermes which I hate as they’re very unreliable and had loads of problems with them in the past

Stretchy is what’s got me in this mess! I’ve been living in leggings and pjs and they are way too forgiving and deceiving Grin

I’ve also ordered some knit wear and t shirts again in different sizes and will see what fits best and will make note of best sizes for future orders. Wardrobe needs an overhaul really.

I’m rubbish at knowing what suits me shape wise and I’m quite fussy about colour and I’m not really a fashion person I stick to basics.

Plain black trousers, vest tops, plain tees, long sleeved tees, fine knit sweaters and cardis and straight fit or boot cut jeans. Plain boots, trainers or ballet pumps for footwear

With occasional forays into something more “fancy” but being older —and fat!— now I’m very self conscious.
