How long before my nails are normal?

I was having a gel polish every 3 weeks until lockdown hit. I have decided to try and get my nails into a good condition and maybe not need the polish going forward. My poor nails are a mess. I've been using an intensive treatment rubbed into the nail and cuticles every night and OPI nail envy. But they are still in awful condition. Peeling splitting and breaking with even just a couple of mm of growth. I never had good nails anyway which is why I loved the gel polish so much. They just always looked so lovely. Should I carry on? Will they improve?? How long will it take? Or maybe some people just do not have good nails.

I have gel manicures for Christmas then for July and August so my toes are done for sandal wearing! Gives them plenty of time to recover in between. I think if you have them done all the time, it ruins your natural nails.

I grew out my gel nails during the first lockdown. It didn't take too long. This time I have removed them with acetone, cut them short and taken the rough surface off with a nail buffer. I have then applied nail strengthener, two coats of pale varnish and a top coat. I also apply intensive hand cream several times a day and massage it around my nails. They look and feel quite strong now.
