Not idea what I want for 40th birthday

My 40th is in April. My husband and mum keep asking me what I want: but I I have no idea. Can anyone recommend investment buy ideas between £100 and £500 please? X

What do you mean by investment? Something that is an actual investment so will appreciate in value in time like a Chanel Boy bag, or something you will get your 'moneys-worth' and a lot of use? Assuming the latter, see below my ideas.

A really nice coat/trench/mac. Something similar to a Burberry trench (these are way over budget £1000+). But you would definitely be able to fine a great one in budget, it would last a long time, get a lot of wear, classic so you won't hate it in 5 years, and also seasonally appropriate so you would get use straight away!

Alternatively, a stunning silk/cashmere pashmina. They are so multi functional, use as a cosy blanket on planes, a light layer on a warm summer evening, or a classy item to keep you warm on evening where you won't want your coat like weddings or black tie. Also, impossible to grow out of...

Not something that will go up in value, but something I will get years worth of use out of!

For my 40th I had an painting of a place that means a lot to me - absolutely love it!

Beautiful earrings or a ring
A painting you wouldn’t buy yourself
Something cashmere
A Champagne / ice bucket and stunning glasses
A DNA testing kit www.23andme.com/en-gb/
Some wine that will improve with age

I got a watch from Larsson and Jennings from Liberty which I loved and still wear. Think it was about £250. And a Tory Burch wallet I asked for. A Mulberry bag is a nice classic thing if you like bags?

Original painting is a good idea

A voucher for a night in an incredible hotel
Ditto, for dinner in a fab restaurant
Underwear that’s stylish and expensive

DH and I turn 50 this year. We are buying a piece of art (probably a painting) for ourselves. Jewellery is a good option, a ring or a watch would be my preferences. Or a good handbag or a good piece of furniture. I wouldn't go for clothes.

Bluewavescrashing · 21/01/2021 18:43

Weekend at a spa hotel would be my choice. Cash to save for a future trip.

Sbowiegirl · 21/01/2021 19:04

I’ve got quite a few nice handbags. I did look at mulberry bags but couldn’t really bring myself to a ask for such a large amount of money to be spent on a bag!

Once Covid is over my mum and I are planning a spa weekend (my 40th and her 70th as we didn’t get to see each other on her 70th due to Covid) and DH and I are planning a night away in a nice hotel to celebrate both our 40ths (again, Covid birthdays)

It’s a shame but I don’t tend to wear a lot of jewelry, especially in the last year. I’ve got a lovely Gucci watch my mum got me for my 21st that I still wear all the time (well, until Covid) not really wanting to replace it yet.

Thanks for the idea folks

IWatch - wouldn't be without mine

Sbowiegirl · 21/01/2021 19:40

@WhenPushComesToShove. What do you use it for?

Was also coming on to suggest an Apple Watch. I turned 40 last week and that's exactly what I've got

I think the amount of money you want to spend is problematic for a handbag. However LV do great scarves you could afford and a Hermes 90x90 is around £330. They are truly investment pieces and definitely something to treasure forever. Or look at LV purses or Gucci. Not sure your budget will stretch to Chanel but earrings might be in reach. If you buy quality it has resale value.

The other recommendation would be antique jewellery. Depends on your taste of course and something you like would take some hunting down but it’s fun searching. The easy option is the Hermes scarf though (or one of their bangles is easily in range too). Hermes scarves are always on Vestaire so are collectable.

For my 50th I had a piece of artwork.
My 40th was jewellery

WhenPushComesToShove · 21/01/2021 23:39

@Sbowiegirl everything: time, date, weather, activities, calls, music, alarms, reminders, texts, WhatsApp. No one needs an Iwatch but once you have one you won't want to be without it

TheFlis12345 · 21/01/2021 23:43

DH bought me a stunning Hermes silk scarf for my 40th. I don’t wear it that often but it feels amazing when I do, it’s timeless and will last a lifetime.

Fourcolourpens · 21/01/2021 23:48

Ugg slippers are amazing

Ugg slippers are amazing
Agree with that! I live in mine these days. Though they won’t last a lifetime sadly
PresentingPercy · 22/01/2021 00:10

It’s a shame that Hermes have fewer scarves on line than you find in the shop. Heathrow shop sells them a bit cheaper.
