I've been eyeing up this jacket for a while. It's now on sale and I think I'd like to get it. My DSis doesn't think it's that nice - which is putting me off (I know it shouldn't and if I like it I should go for it) but I don't want to look silly. I'd love honest opinions please?

Jacket has been purchased. Once it has arrived I might be back with a photo asking your advice again.

You've been really helpful. And thanks again for the honesty, very much appreciated.

I really like it. I think that it lifts it from the boringness of a barbour and makes it a bit more edgy

ShagMeRiggins · 19/01/2021 10:00

Shine and sheen aren’t inherently cheap looking. They might be OTT for some (I really appreciated the Honesty of poster who said she didn’t like shine but her personal style was basically reliable and frumpy Grin).

As evidence of shine looking amazing I submit for you the elegant Hepburn sisters** Audrey and Katharine, in full shiny elegance.

OP, one last thing since you’ve said you’re large breasted—beware the collar on that jacket being very high and closed, which might create a shelf illusion and make you look larger. Good luck, I hope the jacket looks great on you!

**yes, I know the Hepburns weren’t related Wink

Personally I think it’s hideous, but that’s just because it’s not to my taste.

If you like it then I’m sure you’ll look great in it, I always think if people feel confident in their clothes they can look good in just about anything.

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 10:04

Grin @ShagMeRiggins

I am nothing if not self aware!

Robbybobtail · 19/01/2021 10:05

I do think it looks cheap however it depends on the overall look. If you wear uggs, slobby loungewear and have scruffy hair it would look really chavvy (sorry I dislike that word but don’t know how else to say it!) If you’re slim with good hair and generally well put together it could look “glam country”! Grin

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 10:08

I don’t think it looks cheap and would easily be able to tell it’s an expensive jacket

I think on thr right build and hair tone it could look great. Go for it.

PS: I knew I was done for when I realised that Red Magazine was a bit too young for me and switched to Good Housekeeping Grin. I am 37. I was accused of dressing like a middle aged woman when I was 15 too, so I suppose this was inevitable! I also had a wonderful mum and granny, now both deceased, so I feel like I'm with them when I channel their style a bit. No shame here. You don't choose the frump life, the frump life chooses you.
marmiteprincess · 19/01/2021 10:26

I think it looks lovely but would make me look fat but probably because I am!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 19/01/2021 10:29

I like good housekeeping magazine too - people shouldn't be put off by the dodgy title.
Re the jacket, internet photos aren't always the same as real life, so the shine might be different irl. Hope you like it when it arrives OP

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 10:34

It's a fantastic magazine @MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously Smile.

Back to the jacket, I sort of agree with the person who said it is all about styling. I'm sure the op will make it look good. Not for me though. I live bang smack in the middle of Sloaney pony territory, so I expect to see similar round here soon.

Hopeforhappiertimesahead · 19/01/2021 10:43

Look forward to seeing what you think, at least its free delivery and return!

ShagMeRiggins · 19/01/2021 11:24

ParisJeTAime sounds like you know your personal style quite well!

I agree with the poster who said that people who love what they’re wearing usually look great. There are so many looks out there, I love seeing them all. Go forth and honour your inner frumpy with joy...

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 11:44

Thanks shagmerig, I shall Grin! Wink

Faith50 · 19/01/2021 11:50

This jacket is not too my taste - too shiny.

However, if you like it, buy it. We all have different styles. Embrace yours!

KirstenBlest · 19/01/2021 14:25

@DinosaurDiana, I think you mean equestrian not equine. Grin

DinosaurDiana · 19/01/2021 14:29
@DinosaurDiana, I think you mean equestrian not equine. Grin
What’s the difference ? Interested to know.

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 14:49

"Equestrian" in this context means, looks as if they ride horses. Equine would mean, looks like a horse Grin, I think.

KirstenBlest · 19/01/2021 14:50

Thanks Paris.

AdoptedBumpkin · 19/01/2021 15:30

Not for me, but it might suit you.

TableNiner · 19/01/2021 17:50

I think there are better examples of this type of jacket out there and it would be very unforgiving on a large bust and/or broad shoulders but now you've ordered you will be able to see if it matches your dreams!

Iamthewombat · 19/01/2021 17:55

It’s a bit ‘Belstaff on a budget’ but it is not hideous.

Verite1 · 19/01/2021 20:53

I’m afraid I think it’s really rather horrible. But that is mainly due to the shine.

Mrstwiddle · 20/01/2021 00:00

Hideous, and very cheap looking...you can get something nicer for that money.

SoupnSalads · 20/01/2021 03:20

I like it. I have a puffa down from Monsoon that has a sheen and I can honestly say it has continued to make me happy when I put it on, it never feels tired. I like the cut as long as it hits you at a flattering point at the hem. The only bit I don't like is the shiny buckles, I prefer matte, but they are not too overbearing, you'll hardly see them when its on. Grey looks particularly nice with a sheen imho, as it goes with absolutely everything from casual to smart.
