Keratosis pilaris on face

My daughter is 10 and for the last few years she’s had, what I thought was eczema on her cheeks, in and between her eyebrows and chin. It’s rough almost sandpaper like and red. She says it doesn’t hurt or itch.
I’ve since realised it’s KP although I need to take her to gp to confirm but avoiding going at moment as it’s not urgent.
I’ve tried all the creams, the only ones that vaguely work are ceraVe and ceraVe SA.
Is there anything else I can do for her? Right now she’s not bothered about it but she might be more conscious of it as she gets older and if she gets spots it’s going to be hard to treat. Her hormones have been all over the place and probably started around the same time as the KP Appeared.
Anyone got any advice on what I can do to help her?

I wouldn’t put anything on a 10 year olds face, it could damage the skin and cause scaring. The GP is really the only direction to go in.

I have had this all over my face for many many years and would love to know a cure!!!

Pandsbear · 16/01/2021 11:38

I have this (had this), side of face , top of legs, arms etc . Spent years exfoliating, creams, lotions and potions etc just like everyone else. I started taking flaxseed oil as recommended by my ophthalmologist for my eye health. Well I didn’t notice any difference at all with my eyes but after about 6-9 months I realised my skin was smooth and the KP had gone. Bit of a long term project but might be worth a try?

If it doesn’t work then flaxseed is good for you anyway. I can’t promise it will help - but it was the only change I had made. That was about 5 years ago and I still take the flaxseed capsules. My teenage DD has the same issue but isn’t bothered enough to try the capsules!

Pandsbear that’s interesting she has ground flaxseed and chia seeds In yoghurt everyday and has done for over a year, perhaps I’ll increase the quantity a bit see if that works, and look into capsules when she’s older.
Thanks that’s good to know, and if it doesn’t work it’s very good for you anyhow so plenty of other benefits!

I’ve also suffered from it too in the past, started around the time I came off the contraceptive pill and then discovered I had PCOS. I get it on my arms and thighs, not my face though

Ameliorate has really helped the KP on my arms but as she's 10 I would consult a GP or derm first. Keeping my KP really moisturised helps a lot.

Twinmama32 · 16/01/2021 12:09

KimchiLaLa thanks I am planning on a GP visit, just wondered if there was anything I was missing diet or topical application suitable for a child in the interim.
Yes I agree that moisturiser definitely keeps it at bay I moisturise her skin twice a day and it just sucks it up, now we are homeschooling I can do it more as it’s definitely worse in winter, probably due to central heating.

Hi my 5 year old has this on his cheeks too, I use the Lush dream cream it’s brilliant, it’s got oatmeal in. I really massage it in overnight and in the mornings. His is particularly worse over winter.

RogueV · 16/01/2021 12:20

I found Ameliorate pretty pore and it’s also very heavily fragranced

RogueV · 16/01/2021 12:20

Poor!

Saisong · 16/01/2021 12:27

Ameliorate works on my teens arms, she reacted to it on her face so dont try that. She has used Childs Farm and Aveeno on her face, but it just makes a little improvement not elimination.
We shall try the flax oil idea though.

Mcmcmcmc · 16/01/2021 22:53

I have KP on my arms and cheeks, and like your daughter’s, it’s worse in the winter.
I find that when I keep my skin moisturised and use a humidifier in my bedroom at night it tends to get better.
For moisturiser you can try one of the Eucerin creams or lotions with urea 5% or 10%. Urea works by keeping moisture on the skin, that’s why it helps to use a humidifier alongside it.

Goslowlysideways · 16/01/2021 23:39

My 16 yo dd has this and has had it since she was 13. We saw a dermatologist about it and he said that there was nothing that could be done about it but that it would go as she got older.
It's definitely worse in winter. I've bought all manner of things to try and help it but nothing has helped. Sorry to be so negative.

Spainintherain · 18/01/2021 14:36

Pandsbear please can I know the capsule oil you use to get rid of facial kp so I buy the right strength. I have tried everything else for 30 years!
