How long after your first few greys

Did you feel the need to dye over them?

I have never dyed my brown hair but I am finding more coarse grey hairs weekly now.

How long did you wait between finding your first few and needing to cover them (if you did of course)?

20+ years so far, there are a few more now but not enough to be worth dyeing it.

Following.

I've never coloured my hair and I don't ^think^ I'm going to. I've got an increasing amount of grey, but probably less than 100. Closer I get to 50, the less point I see in starting to colour my hair now. I found my first at 38 and am nearly a decade older now, so still not many, but they all seem to be around my face, so I see them a lot all wiry and at weird angles to my head.

Musmerian · 09/01/2021 15:24

I had my first grey at 37, currently 54 and still not dyeing. I’m still mostly brunette particularly if my hair is clean and straightened so I’m holding off. My hairdresser and I have a running joke about it but I can’t face the thought of the upkeep and it looks ok.

VinylDetective · 09/01/2021 16:29

I found my first grey hair at 16 and spent the next 28 years dying it for fun, not to cover the grey. At 44 I decided to see what my natural colour was - I genuinely had no idea - discovered it was silver and never touched the colour again.

MrsJonesAndMe · 09/01/2021 17:22

Grey hairs appeared about a decade ago and not done anything to cover it in all that time.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 09/01/2021 17:29

I dyed my hair a bit as a teen and young adult, mainly for fun, but had stopped well before I found my first grey hair at 30.

My hair is dark blonde and I still don't have masses of grey, I don't bother to dye it.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 09/01/2021 17:29

And I'm 42 now

Malbecca · 09/01/2021 17:30

About 7/8 years. I found my first grey hair at 19 but had very few until mid-late 20s. In my mid-30s now and have been using semi-permanent box kits but going to have to look into permanent dyes soon.

Grew out my hair during the first lockdown to see what my natural colour looks like now but it looks like dishwater and doesnt suit me. Straight back on the dye!

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 09/01/2021 17:39

I had my first grey at around 24. It was just one though and stayed at 1 or 2 until 27 when I got a few more. Steadily increased from 35. I'm now 37 and will only now start dying my hair.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 09/01/2021 17:41

I would say I have very dark brown hair so it shows. If your hair is more of a light brown then it may not be worth doing as early.

EssentiallyDelighted · 09/01/2021 18:07

I'm not going to start now either (early 50s). Mine is dark brown so they do show close up but they are all singletons so overall they don't show much (especially at the moment when no one is nearer than 2m).

Notashandyta · 09/01/2021 18:11

First grey hair at 40. Started dying it at 41. Just use a box dye on it. Similar to my natural colour, repeat every 4-5 months. Still not alot of grey so doesnt need more frequent

Crocky · 09/01/2021 18:12

32 years and counting.

HouseofBrieandBanter · 09/01/2021 18:12

I started about age 45, am 48 now. Last summer I put cassia on my hair, turning the white hairs blonde (J am brown with bits of blonde anyway)

Need to do it again

It’s natural dye (like henna) and lived the subtle results (but not the green mud on my head for 3 hrs, not sure I can be bothered Grin)

ShrikeAttack · 09/01/2021 18:33

Hmm. I got my first grey at 16 (also very dark brunette), started dyeing them in my mid-30s I guess, gave up after about five years, just too much up-keep.

Runhomejack · 09/01/2021 19:36

I'm early thirties, mid brown hair, had a few grey strands for a long time now. They are at the front of my head and it's starting to look a bit 'salt and pepper' when I pull my hair back. When hair is down and parted I get a small grey streak by my face which I like. I grabbed a semi permanent pastel colour in Sainsbury's as it was reduced. I liked the effect it had on my greys, but didn't like how it made the rest of my hair flat, even though it didn't much alter the brown hair as it is too dark. I don't plan to dye because of this reason. But if I could get a pink rinse just for my greys for special occasions I'd love that.

JaceLancs · 09/01/2021 22:46

Probably about 5 years
Now I stay as near to my natural colour as possible and do too touch up every 6/8 weeks and then drag through to blend in
1-2 times a year I do a whole head colour but only if starting to look lighter on ends eg if I’ve been on holiday somewhere sunny

MonkeyPuddle · 09/01/2021 22:49

Started going grey at 21, if been dying my hair for years by that point, bleaching and colouring bright colours or box dyes. Started with regular highlights in my late 20’s til I was about 32. I’m now 35 and have grown out all the dye and have two long, wide stripes of grey from my temples. I like it.

goose1964 · 09/01/2021 23:37

I've been going grey for about 3 years but it's only noticeable in a narrow streak, a bit like a highlight. Neither of my grans went grey until they were well into their 60s .

MoltonSilver · 09/01/2021 23:55

I was colouring my hair long before I ever had any grey.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 11/01/2021 11:20

I've had my hair highlighted since I was 14. Since I started getting some grey hairs a few years ago I've been dying the roots myself very effectively.

Tehmina23 · 11/01/2021 15:23

I got my first white (yes going white like one of my nan's) hairs aged 37 & was like hell no, so I started having regular highlights & at 44 I still have them.. I'm not Uber blonde just natural looking.
One side of my face seems to have more white hairs than anywhere so I've found it best for my hairdresser to just put tint on that area as it lasts 4 - 5 weeks.
In normal times I'd get half head highlights every 6 - 7 weeks.
But in Lockdown I've had to grin & bare the white hairs & hope they don't show too much among the blonde.
I darent touch my colour myself as my hairdresser uses 2 tones including bleach.
So I last had it done in December a full head of highlights & a cut.

I swear I will never go white like my Nan until I'm 90 as the hairs aren't sleek & shiny they're curly & frizzy so very ageing.
