It's for my step daughter's wedding which will be in the autumn. (Next year, so I really am thinking ahead 😂)

Dress is 100% wool, by Hobbs and a bargain atm on eBay 😅. I like things which are quite classical and the mother of the bride type stuff I've looked at online so far is over the top. I'm hoping that being wool, it should be warm enough to get away with only a coat to get to the venue, then no little jacket or cardi required for the rest of the reception.

Is it too boring for a wedding? The wedding is posh country house type venue. I would dress it up with some lovely shoes and a classy bag? I may just buy it anyway and wear it out to dinner when we can eventually nice things like that again!

I'm mid fifties, 5'7" and a size 10. Thank you 😊

@steppemum

I think it is really hard to say.

If I wore it, it would look plain and dull.

If Kate wore it, it would look elgant and sophisticated and everyone would go wow.

So much depends on how you carry it off. Could be incredible - understated but classy, or just plain.

Kate could wear a bin liner and still look fabulous. I, on the other hand, would still need magic knickers 😂😂

Perfect for a wedding. Lovely shape and colour. I hate all that froufrou wedding stuff and you’d wear it elsewhere as well. Go for it.

sunlightbuttons · 09/01/2021 15:56

I love it but probably wouldn't wear it to a wedding.

StarlightLady · 09/01/2021 17:10

I think it could (rather than would) work dressed up with the right things.

But from the photograph, it us very difficult to ascertain exactly how the neck would sit.

catwithflowers · 09/01/2021 18:09

StarlightLady I know what you mean about the neck. The dummy is shown wearing quite a chunky necklace but I think that would be lost with the neckline of the dress plus I don't go in for chunky jewellery.

Still undecided about its suitability for a significant wedding but really appreciate all the opinions thanks. I very much like the style and will probably bid on it and buy it, if within budget by the end of the auction, for another occasion. Unless it makes me look absolutely gorgeous (highly unlikely 😂) in which case it may be wedding attire after all!!

I love it, it’s classic, timeless and elegant

BarryGlendenning · 09/01/2021 18:31

I love it and think it could easily be accessorised for a wedding.

Faith50 · 09/01/2021 18:44

Nice dress but far too casual for a wedding, especially when you are a close family member.

You will have no problem finding alternative options.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 09/01/2021 19:07

It’s not too casual, it’s just right
You don’t need to go looking like a quality street just because your motb

LegendDairy · 09/01/2021 19:10

Lovely dress but I'd wear it to work. The wool material is a bit heavy for an autumn wedding.

Verite1 · 09/01/2021 22:46

I like the dress but (like many before me) would see it as a work dress rather than a wedding dress.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 09/01/2021 22:49

That is the issue some people have a prescriptive notion of a MOTB dress and usually it’s ghastly or pastel or a ted baker abomination

MushMonster · 09/01/2021 22:49

The dress is really nice, but I do not see wedding material on it.

merryhouse · 09/01/2021 22:59

Is there an accepted etiquette for stepmother of the bride garb? - and does it depend on how the bride's parents get on, and whether she was the OW?

I think it's a lovely dress, if you're happy with the neck (it looks fine, I just wouldn't want to deal with it myself). Maybe have a long red silky thing to shove over your elbows if you get chilly. Ooh - or a sort of rose blush which you then duplicate in the shoes and bag.

PurplePansy05 · 09/01/2021 23:01

It's not casual, but it's an office dress, not a wedding outfit.

catwithflowers · 10/01/2021 11:25

@merryhouse no such drama. MOB sadly passed away many years ago ☹️

I think that could look wonderful on you. It is classic and if teamed with expensive accessories would be elegant and tasteful. If you longish hair a lovely simple updo would work wonders to show off the elegant neckline. Drop earrings, excellent sheer tights and fabulous shoes.
