How much hair is it usual to lose in the shower (gross pic attached)

Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid or not... I feel like I'm losing more hair than usual when I wash it. I have always shed like a cat (!) but it just seems more dramatic, and I'm now also not sure my hair doesn't look a bit thinner all over.

But I have no idea what's "normal", hence the gross (sorry) pic! For reference I have just above shoulder length hair and wash it twice a week, so I guess at least I'm not losing this amount daily....

I have also managed to get some blood tests booked in for thyroid (am often at the low end of normal) and iron (have had anaemia before - although don't remember it affecting my hair)...

@TabithaTowers

Normal for me too. My hair brush looks like I've been grooming an afghan hound.
Haha!

My hair loss seems to have reduced since I started taking vitamin D supplements.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 07/01/2021 22:26

I do take a basic multi vitamin as it happens, as I have IBS and worry I don't absorb things very well... but not sure how much vit d it has! Will have to check!

As a cleaner who has to empty clients shower traps (gross 😂) I can tell you that I see more hair than that!

When I wash my hair about the same or more. I have very thick hair (every hairdresser I see says its the thickest they have seen and they book me an hour) so it doesn't concern me. I do notice it starts to look receding if I don't eat enough vegetables. You could try one of those hair multivitamins or one with Biotin in it.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 08/01/2021 08:45

@SoupnSalads yes that's a thought.

I might try some better shampoo to hopefully strengthen what I've got, and maybe a vitamin to help new growth be better?

I was looking at the Boots "Roots" range or maybe the new Pantene grow strong range, and "hairburst" vitamins... unless anyone has any recommendations!!

Hmm there is a thread in aibu about actual hair loss which have mentioned both nioxin shampoo and watermarks shampoo... might see how crippplingly expensive they look...!

That would be normal for me. I lose heaps of hair, drives my husband nuts (I have jokingly threatened to shave it off). I am not going bald though, so I guess it's being replaced as quickly as it's being lost

NaughtyNell · 08/01/2021 17:53

I lose a bit more than that every time I wash my hair its unnerving but then I have past boobs length extremely thick coarse hair so I think it's normal for me. I brush it through before I wash it .even when I brush it every day I get a lot if hair fall I guess it's because it's so thick.

NaughtyNell · 08/01/2021 17:54

I also only was my hair once a week so it's a weeks worth of hair fall really

BlueSussex · 08/01/2021 18:22

I have long thick curly hair.

I would freak out if I lost that much. I usually don't lose any - one or two hairs max. I never ever brush mine when it is dry.

Adult DD loses way more than that. Her hair is very long, thick and straight, but she has been on a mega diet which we think might be causing the hair loss.

If your hair seems in good condition overall I wouldn't worry.

Thank you to everyone who has replied.

I think my plan is A) mostly try to stop obsessing and catastrophising this, and B) look at some nicer products to make the most of what I've got.

I don't think I have ever had particularly good hair, but probably now mid-30s after a year of pandemic and having anxiety, it just needs more of a helping hand than 10yrs ago!!

That looks normal to me. My DD has bum length hair and quite honestly she could create a daily wig with the amount she sheds 🙄

Maddyj5 · 16/02/2021 12:38

I hope its normal because that's what I've been losing recently too 😂🤔 putting it down to a bit more coming out from the stress of this last year, I don't lose nearly as much on non hair wash days so I think it just looks like alot when it finally all comes out while washing! This is what came out today after washing and blow drying
