Is it worth spending money on slippers?

And if so, what do you recommend? I usually buy several pairs a year, cheap ones from Asda/Primark/Amazon, wherever is most convenient at the time, replacing them when they start falling apart, which is usually after a couple of months. And now I'm at home more, they're getting worn more, and wearing out quicker. Wondering whether spending more would be better in the long run. What I want: soft, not too frumpy looking, slippers that are clearly slippers and not shoes, and that don't fall apart. What I don't want: open toe, frumpy, stiff soles, feeling like I'm wearing shoes.

Any recommendations? Let's keep budget flexible at the moment. Thank you!

I had a £20 pair of boot slippers from longbay. Having been put in the washing machine, they came out discoloured and having lost their shape. I should think that other similarly priced ones are the same

If you get an expensive pair that's made from good materials from a reputable brand, it'd probably be a wise investment since you wear them often

FolornLawn · 13/09/2021 13:59

I have Glerups which are still going strong after 7 years. Never been washed, no smell.

I also have Birkenstock felt clog things which have more support in them, but, having once made the mistake of putting them on with wet feet, really smell.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/09/2021 14:00

I wear either Ugg boots or Birkenstock Boston clogs at home as slippers. I actually recently got new Uggs, but my old ones lasted about ten years being worn in the house/garden. I do wear the Birkenstocks as actual outside shoes, but the Uggs are never seen in public!

@whataboutbob

Drapers of Glastonbury. Sheepskin, made in England, like sending your feet on a holiday
You should be on comission. I haven't even looked but I want some
TollgateDebs · 13/09/2021 20:01

Another Sketchers Bob fan here and have two pairs, so that one has a chance to air, as I live in them during the winter and they are great for indoor / outdoor use without thinking about them getting ruined. Spent a great deal on cheap slippers and am now a convert.

I buy a pair of Sheepland sheepskin boots approx every 3/4 years and wear them practically every day in winter. Life changing I tell you, especially if you want to turn the heating down whilst working from home.

Bananaman123 · 13/09/2021 20:07

I have some from next but are already pretty worn in 6 months. My
Uggs however lasted years. M and m direct have some on offer now and again

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/09/2021 20:19

Moshulu. I want a sole that will survive a trip to the compost bin, and they have to be warm.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/09/2021 20:29

@TheFlis12345, you have a lot to answer for. I looked up Barbour Sadie slippers and discovered their boots. Bloody hell. I need some new ankle boots and some of theirs are gorgeous.

I don't often go overboard about shoes, so I'm blaming you.

SunSeaSurfGin · 13/09/2021 20:37

I can only seem to walk in Moshulu slip on slippers. They are so comfy. I find I don't lift my feet to walk in other slippers and shuffle around and I feel really unsafe on stairs in them

MrsMaizel · 13/09/2021 20:45

One of my sons bought me these from Just Sheepskin and they are great - hard soles so can go out to bins . I don't see the need to pay another 50 pounds for a trendy brand. Had them coming up to 3 years now . Sheepskin has worn a bit flat at the heels to be fair so maybe time for a new pair .

I have UGG slippers. I buy them in the same every couple of years. They are fabulous. I need decent grippy soles to push DDs wheelchair and in the evening I don’t want to stay in shoes!

Sneakycrab · 14/09/2021 11:08

I've just treated myself to my second pair of Ugg's after my old ones were looking a bit tatty after 4 years! They weren't even broken just the outer surface were very marked. I've kept them for summer gardening pumps as they're so hard wearing.

You can buy sheepskin inserts as well for if the lining goes flat, I bought some after the 2.5 year mark.

I can't tell how much I love them. I skimp on lots but it really is a highlight coming home from a busy day and slipping your feet in them.

nordica · 14/09/2021 11:26

I usually wear Heat Holders thick socks as autumn/winter slippers. They are super warm and have the anti-slip dots on the soles so they are ideal on my wooden floors, and obviously feel like socks. And easy to throw into the wash a couple of times a week (I have more than one pair).

Lowlifeinhighplaces · 14/09/2021 13:00

TKmaxx have some Just Sheepskin slippers in at the moment at £29.99, same ones £60 on JS website.

After my last couple of posts, I dont work for TKmaxx!!!!

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/09/2021 13:04

@Peridot1

I get plantar fasciitis so need supportive slippers and I find Fitflop slippers good. Very supportive and last me at least a year.
Same here. Support is very important if you have PF. I wear Birkenstocks in summer and Mahabis in winter.
spacer · 14/09/2021 18:12

I’ve had a pair of ugg slippers for 7 years now. Still going strong.

caspersmagicaljourney · 14/09/2021 18:48

@Spied

I've found Next slippers last well.
Me too and they're reasonably good value for money. M&S worth a look too.
DidgeDoolittle · 14/09/2021 20:50

I have some Moshulu bootie type slippers. They are just about to go into their 5th winter and have loads of wear left in them still. Highly recommend.

Bertiebiscuit · 14/09/2021 22:36

Definitely sheepskin with a proper sole - I got mine in Debenhams about 4 years ago, very expensive but the are still going strong

Hakunapotato · 14/09/2021 22:39

North Face

Gladioli23 · 14/09/2021 22:44

If anyone is still on the hunt for sheepskin ones I've been really pleased with mine from Onaie: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/OnaieShop

They have a website and sell through Oliver Bonas and places too but their Etsy shop is cheapest by miles.

Inthesameboatatmo · 15/09/2021 06:45

Following with interest, I'm sick of constantly replacing my slippers.

Bagelsandbrie · 15/09/2021 06:49

Can you wash the sheepskin ones? I like to be able to bung mine in the washing machine to freshen them up.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/09/2021 07:07

I have Celtic Classic Shortie Boots - they're from their boots section (they do shorties in slippers too but the sole on the real boots is very hard wearing)

They cost £140 now but were about £60 when I bought them

In 2006

The inner sheepskin sole got squashed down so they sent me a free sheepskin liner in 2015

They are washable and the sole looks like new

Probably the cheapest purchase I've ever made - MUCH cheaper than a succession of supermarket slippers

And I'm smug as fuck for the environment at not having to thrown out 20 plus pairs of slippers in the last 15 years
