Is it worth spending money on slippers?

And if so, what do you recommend? I usually buy several pairs a year, cheap ones from Asda/Primark/Amazon, wherever is most convenient at the time, replacing them when they start falling apart, which is usually after a couple of months. And now I'm at home more, they're getting worn more, and wearing out quicker. Wondering whether spending more would be better in the long run. What I want: soft, not too frumpy looking, slippers that are clearly slippers and not shoes, and that don't fall apart. What I don't want: open toe, frumpy, stiff soles, feeling like I'm wearing shoes.

Any recommendations? Let's keep budget flexible at the moment. Thank you!

My last pair of Uggs lasted eight years. Well worth the upfront cost.

movingonup20 · 04/01/2021 13:07

My asda £3 ones are currently 18 months old, still in good condition. If you only wear them inside (no nipping to recycling boxes/bin/car in them) they last and at £3 vs tens of pounds I'm sticking with them

savvy7 · 04/01/2021 13:24

yes, Celtic and Co here too. Have them on nearly all the time now so well worth the outlay

CointreauVersial · 04/01/2021 13:33

Gotta be sheepskin for me. They last for ages and don't go smelly. I have a pair of slide-type slippers with a sole from Celtic & Co, and some boot ones from Sheepland which I wheel out when it's really chilly.

There's usually a discount code knocking about (and Sheepland sell seconds, which are virtually indistinguishable from the regular ones, but a lot cheaper).

I have the sketchers ones that Always pictured - love them and they have been on my feet nearly all day every day for the last ten months!

ReviewingTheSituation · 04/01/2021 13:35

I've had a pair of mahabis for 3 or 4 years now - they've just had an anniversary (Xmas present), but I've lost count!

I used to wear them a fair amount (mainly in winter), but since lockdown they have been worn almost every day. Still plenty of use in them, no real signs of wear at all.
At the time, they felt like a huge extravagance, now they feel like a very economical purchase.

BaublesAndBawbags · 04/01/2021 13:36

Wearing my Kiwi Sheepskin boots right now, and my feet are toasty. DH has a pair of Celtic & Co house boots that he also loves.

I got my third pair of these for Christmas, 6 years after the first and the cast off pairs are still in use as emergency going to the garage footwear. They are warm but not sweaty and the rubber sole means you don’t slip in them.

Not if you have a modern flat. They age you.

I'm on that thread too 😂
notacooldad · 04/01/2021 15:13

My feet get too warm in slippers so I just wear flip flops around the house.
It may not be everyone's choice but it suits me. I have tried sheep skin and lined slippers but I just get too warm in them and like to have my feet exposed to air!

SuePreem · 04/01/2021 15:19

I have a pair of these sheepers - they're fab.

Before that I had some birkenstock mules that the dog ate. The sheepers are warmer and less expensive if they become dog chew toys.

NotMeNoNo · 04/01/2021 15:23

I worked out since I'm going to be WFH for the next few months, slippers would be my main footwear investment, just ordered some from Moshulu. I do need an outdoor sole fit for walking across the garden. The Next suede mules are great but I don't like this year's colours.

CherryBlossomTree7 · 04/01/2021 15:42

I have some Next ones that I've worn for a few months and love. Plenty of wear left in them and so so warm.

Itsap · 04/01/2021 15:44

Thanks for all the replies. I'll have a look through and see what I can find. I'm not planning on buying any shoes in the near future, so want to get myself some decent ones.

I have some Ugg slippers which are a year old and are great.

So impressed with them that I bought some for my husband for Christmas - and he loves them too.

Oh, and I'm quite mean usually - so this is an extravagant purchase for me, but no regrets.

1forAll74 · 04/01/2021 16:24

I have just had delivered , some slipper boots. They are fur lined, but like a knitted fairisle or nordic design in red and white. Good non slip soles. and very warm and cozy. My house is old, and can be quite chilly, so I always buy this type of slipper. They were £12.95 online, from some place in Scotland.

Imtoooldforallthis · 04/01/2021 17:08

I also recommend the skechers ones. I have had three pair of uggs and the quality has gone downhill with each pair.

letsmakethetea · 04/01/2021 17:10

My next slippers, £30, are still going strong after 2 years.

Itsap · 05/01/2021 16:50

Thanks for all the recommendations. I looked through them all, and have ordered a pair of Moshulu bootie type ones. The sole looked good and they're a pretty colour. Fingers crossed they last longer than my usual cheap ones.

I bought Moshulu ones three winters ago and there is now a hole in the upper part of one. I wear them loads and the soles look hardly worn so I'd definitely buy again.
I made the change as I felt guilty about throwing away one or two pairs of cheapies every year (flt like I was basically buying landfill).

TomorrowSomething · 13/09/2021 13:44

Oops - I just noticed how old this thread was! I was searching for slippers and thought it was recent. Still, I suppose it's the right time of year to be thinking about them Grin

mydogisthebest · 13/09/2021 13:47

I don't think it is worth paying a lot for slippers. I buy mine in Primark. They cost about £4 and they last me months and months - been known to last close to a year.

I am at home most days and so wear them all the time

Pigtailsandall · 13/09/2021 13:54

@TomorrowSomething never too early to think of slippers! I live in a very old and drafty house and I dream of those birkenstock sheepskin slipper/shoes!
