FFS I need a moisturiser for spotty yet ageing skin

Please help! I need a night cream that won't break me out/clog my pores but WILL help my poor ageing face. Late 30s. My skin is kind of dry and dehydrated on my cheeks, shiny on my nose and spotty on my chin. Yes it's delightful. Please help. I recently tried Dr Jart ceramidin cream but clogged up my face no end. TIA

I have the same problem so I use the LRP on nose and chin and a heavier moisturiser everywhere else. Works a treat for me.

AllGongNoDinner · 03/01/2021 19:40

I like m&s sleep cream

mamaison · 03/01/2021 19:48

Same problem here and don’t have a solution sorry. Mine is caused by PCOS and diet helps but still very hard to find the right moisturiser. Reading responses with interest!

shivermetimbers77 · 03/01/2021 19:52

Pure jojoba oil is brilliant for acne prone skin as it is very moisturising but completely non pore-blocking . It mimics the skin’s own sebum, so means you stop overproducing it. I also love Avene Cicalfate repair cream: it’s moisturising and also repairs damaged skin. Heals spots and leaves a lovely glow.

Fififerry1 · 03/01/2021 19:57

I had the same problems and my skin has been transformed by switching to Roche-Posay products. Whenever I run out I notice the difference within a week. I also use hyaluronic acid with vitamin C every day under my moisturiser. The one I buy is Poppy Austin - online only and very reasonable. I also had rosacea and skin is genuinely better than it has ever been.

ratatouillepudding · 03/01/2021 20:07

It's so hard to know which way to turn with skincare 😩 I have times where my skin seems fine on my current regime but then something will change and I have no idea what and it will all come tumbling down.

I've tried LRP spot stuff before and it did nothing for me at all, same with salicylic acid, even though I know they're supposed to help. But I feel completely overwhelmed with the things I could try!

ratatouillepudding · 03/01/2021 20:08

I have tried the ordinary Azelaic acid and I think I like it but again sometimes it's hard to tell which bit of the skincare is helping and which bit isn't!

Do you think you’re trying too many products?.

Take the spots off the table because that’s a medical problem for the dr to sort out.

ratatouillepudding · 03/01/2021 20:26

Quite possibly I'm trying too many but it's been over quite a long period and I'm trying to figure out what works! And now I've got more to try 😂

Do I need a GP or dermatologist? I would not be keen to take oral antibiotics, every time I've had those it's messed up my system no end.

Have you tried Vichy Normaderm? It's hydrating but for combination/spot prone skin. I really like it, especially for hormonal breakouts.

Difficultusername · 03/01/2021 20:33

I like this one too, but is based on salicylic which you said you aren't keen on though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/01/2021 20:35

Gp. You won’t get a ref to derm unless everything else has been tried and failed.

Penicillin affects me too but they use tetracyclines for acne but only if topicals fail & topicals work for a lot of people.

Just cleanse and moisturise for a couple of weeks then introduce another product. If it doesn’t cause a reaction your ok aren’t you?.

bluebeck · 03/01/2021 20:59

I agree you sound like you are overloading your skin. Take it back to basics.

Once you are stabilised then the two moisturisers that I would recommend for our type of skin would be (depending on your budget)

This Estee Lauder Cream £45 for a day cream.

This Olay night cream with retinol £35

vixb1 · 03/01/2021 21:28

I've been using Skin+Me total game changers for me. I'm on month two and my skin is so much better.

I had oily parts with regular break outs which which scar. Make up just slides off as the oil gets to it.

But it's all getting so much better on this cream! It's prescription and they've put me on Tretoin for the first time this month.

If you want a recommendation code, let me know!

Goldieloxx · 03/01/2021 21:50

Same issue here, dry, reactive skin that most moisturisers don't touch. I tried CeraVe for the first time a couple of days ago after reading great reviews about how it works for sensitive skin, I had an allergic reaction to it, so if you do try that, make sure you patch test

endlesscraziness · 03/01/2021 21:51

A.Florence Skin Rehab Light is a gel moisturiser that's packed full of great ingredients www.aflorence.co.uk/product-page/50ml-skin-rehab-light-repair-hydration-for-compromised-skin

SmallYappyTypeDog · 03/01/2021 21:55

I had this exact problem. Spotty hormonal acne and dry skin, lightweight gel moisturisers were not moisturising enough and rich ones broke me out further. I got a skin and me prescription and my spots are gone and my skin isn't dry and tight anymore. My prescription now contains retinol for aging and I am covering all bases. I just use a light cleanser and moisturiser by la Roche posay plus micellar water as a first cleanser if I have been wearing makeup. Its £19.99 for the sub but I am saving money overall and not throwing away products that don't work. My skin has never been better.

287xx · 03/01/2021 21:58

My skin has always been best the less products I use. I alternate between La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo which unclogs, reduces spots and scarring, and Simple Hydra Boost Gel Cream. I’ve tried way more expensive skincare and used to work for a luxury skincare brand but these two work best for my skin in terms of reducing breakouts and oiliness but also keeping my skin hydrated and reducing fine lines.

ratatouillepudding · 04/01/2021 11:25

Thank you all for the suggestions, I will sift through them all!

I like the look of skin and me but then again it is quite a lot per month, I don't know. The main ingredients they use seem to be retinol and azelaic acid, which I already use and some people seem to be saying to pear back? It's all so confusing 😩

I've been using the ordinary moisturise factors as a moisturiser and I'm. It sure what I think of it...

OP posts:
Feedingthebirds1 · 04/01/2021 12:09

Hi OP, I think you're me. Same problems, oils, waxes, shea butter, silicones etc are all no-no and I'm using Moisturising Factors too. Have been for a few years, and as a daytime moisturiser it's great but it's also lightweight.

About a month ago I fell down an Amazon rabbit hole and found this and couldn't resist even though I've got drawers full of other stuff, and I have to say I'm impressed. Much deeper moisturisation with no spots or blackheads.

As I say, I've only been using it a month so I can't report on long term effects, but so far so good.

ChaToilLeam · 04/01/2021 12:12

@Frequentflier

Neutrogena oil free. The non-comodegenic one. Works for my similar skin
I use the same. It has really helped!
StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 04/01/2021 12:22

If you can afford to see a private derm then I would go and do it now. I cost me £300 in total, including my prescriptions, and it was so much more helpful than going back to the gp over and over again working my way through the nhs standard solutions which never did anything to help my spots.

SmallYappyTypeDog · 04/01/2021 20:34

When I started with Skin and Me my prescription was Clindamycin, zinc and hyaluronic acid and it has been adjusted as my spots have cleared. The rest of the routine is very basic and it has certainly worked for me.

I was initially unsure about spending so much per month but the rest of my routine is very cheap. I am not throwing away products and my skin has never been better. As well as spots going, the texture has improved, less visible pores and all around more glowy. I am in my 40s and my skin has never looked better. I don't wear foundation anymore and just wear a little bit of tinted moisturiser and powder if I want to look polished. So I am saving there too!

ratatouillepudding · 28/01/2021 17:07

Hi, me again! I've been making a list of all your suggestions and thinking about my skin.

Basically I think the problem is similar to one pp who said that the moisturisers for oily skin often aren't moisturising enough but others are too greasy/break me out.

Those of you who use LRP products which do you use? I tried the effaclar duo in the past and it did nothing for me. But I think it is a good brand.

What type of cleansers are people using? I've been using a balm to avoid drying out my skin but now unsure. Do I need an acid toner?! What serum should I use?! Feel like I'm having a crisis 😂 hellllp
