How bad will it be if I go straight from black to blond

Will my hair make it through? I'm so bored. I'm utterly depressed at being in tier 4 and want to do something. Anything
Keep watching magical YouTube. Ideas of people going from black to blond,
I've been blonde before but not for a few years and have been box dying my grey roots since then. Blush

Will my hair fall out or something? I have long hair so as long as it survives I'm happy to ruin it and then chop it off later. Just want it to look nice...

Awful, it will be truly awful! Trust me I speak from experience. You'll be equally as bored an hour later but with shit, orange hair - step away from the dye!

Aquamarine1029 · 27/12/2020 19:37

You would be mad to attempt this yourself. It will be a disaster.

Preparedtobetoldimwrong · 27/12/2020 19:38

Are you planning to do this yourself? I’d say that was a bad idea. According to Brad Mondo (hairdresser) many of the videos of people going very dark to very blonde are faked or using wigs etc. It’s all done for likes.

Bottledupagain · 27/12/2020 19:41

I've just dyed my hubbys hair it was mousey virgin hair, blonde as a child so expected it to take. Three boxes of home dye later and it's now bright yellowish blonde. Not the white we were hoping for.
His scalp cannot take any more bleach.
The toner barely did a thing.
But it's better than the orange. Grin
We are going to try a grey colour tomorrow and hope for the best at least he can shave his head if it still goes tits up after that.
Don't do it...

User415373 · 27/12/2020 19:43

I've done this and it was a total disaster. I consider myself pretty good at hair stuff generally. I fell down a YouTube hole and thought it would be easy! Ruined my hair for years. Go to a salon and do it over a few sessions!

XiCi · 27/12/2020 19:46

You won't be able to. I had to slowly go lighter and lighter very gradually and it took a long time. I think it would have just ended up an orange mess otherwise.

isadorapolly · 27/12/2020 19:47

You can do it at home but not in one day, it still has to be gradual. You could get it a nice warm brown and then wait a month or so then do it again.

You would need colour stripper and bleach, and a semi/permanent tint in an ash brown to use as a toner.

missrks · 27/12/2020 19:52

Don't do it! It will take at least 3/4 bleaches and it's going to turn your hair into a gummy, stretchy birds nest. Honestly, please don't!

onedayinthefuture · 27/12/2020 19:54

I would leave it to the professionals. Any colour like that needs a good hair colourist. If you're bored though, how about one of those semi permanent colours with a purple or red tint to compliment and lift the black? And treat yourself to a hair mask.

WhosThatGirl89 · 27/12/2020 19:55

Don't use bleach! I've just gone from dark brown. I used Colourb4. I've done it twice over a couple of days. You'll probably need to do it at least 3 times. You have to keep it on for an hour and it doesn't smell nice! It has definitely lightened my hair. Pics of results. Good luck!

OP I went from dyed black hair to platinum blonde over the first quarantine too :)

It is hard, lots of work and ideally you need to do lots of research and planning. Brad Mondo is your best friend; not only does he have advice videos but he also has tons of bleach fail videos where you can see what people do wrong and Brad explains what they should have done. I tried to go blonde a couple of times when younger but it was a true disaster. This time it really worked but it's a long slog and yes you do risk ruining your hair.

I also went onto Salon Geek which is for professionals and got loads of info about colour theory, products and some info about technique. My advice would be:

  • Again, research products and method
  • Choose the right type of bleach for your hair (I was going to order salon bleach but found the L9 bleach by Schwarzkopf great)
  • Section your hair really well
  • SATURATE each section with bleach. This is the only hope you have of avoiding patchy orange hair. I have cut my hair to shoulder length and still use 4 boxes.
  • Tone well. Permanent box dye is not a great toner. Understand that hair will and should go yellow. Pale yellow if done right but it will still be yellow and need toning with purple products. The UK does not have a huge range of toners in stores
  • Deep condition the crap out of your hair before during and after
  • Be aware that it's a commitment because if you don't do your roots often enough you will get banding and it can ruin the look.

It's effort but I feel like a new woman with my bright hair. It suits my cool toned pale skin, it makes me look better when not wearing makeup and I like to pamper myself so having higher maintenance hair :) I cannot afford hundreds of pounds in a salon and I also went to a very expensive salon pre children and they absolutely butchered my hair, so I don't think it's necessarily even better unless you go to very expensive and specific places.

Oliv5 · 27/12/2020 20:02

I done it through a hairdresser and was orange for a while but got there eventually. Wouldn't do it myself! I tried when I was a teenager and although I managed it, the condition was awful.

PearlescentIridescent · 27/12/2020 20:03

Oh and I completely forgot to mention I did remove previous colour with a couple of bleach baths before hand.

tartanpantalons · 27/12/2020 20:12

Ok. I'm thinking this could be one of those regrets you never live down then.
Been totally mesmerised by the perfect blond at the end videos on YouTube
Thanks @WhosThatGirl89 for the pictures then.
So I have to plan this. Would say I was hoping to avoid total embarrassment of any muck up at the school run but the way things are going I imagine I won't have to worry about possibly looking like a tangerine.

Has anyone used Schwarzkopf blond me that was my master plan. However I am currently rethinking this..

I went from very dark brown to blonde in the spring. I have short, fine hair. It needed 2 boxes of bleach, and a Wella colour charm ash blonde toner (which annoyingly they don’t seem to make anymore). It looked alright, I’m a bit reckless with hair dye but I’ve done it before so I knew what was involved.

I bleached the roots another 2/3 times over the year and then noticed some minor breakage so stopped with the bleach and dyed it a dark blonde similar to my natural mousey hair. I’ll be leaving it alone for a while now.

I found the hard bit was actually covering all of the hair - miss a bit and it looks awful and really obvious!

tartanpantalons · 27/12/2020 20:26

I should have put I'll probably buy what professionals use but I am not a professional.
I did dye my hair red about ten years ago and my dh painted on the mixed dye.
That was ten years ago and my dh swore he would never do it again as it took about 3 hours ha! He has however agreed to help me do this. But again we are not professionals.
We do however have the luxury of being able to hide my hair under a coat and hat for the school run and wfh the rest of the time. And thanks to being I. tier 4 not meet up with anyone ever again anyway.

@tartanpantalons yes I was going to use the Schwarzkopf Blondeme but I was too scared of ordering it through salon websites😅

I have a strong suspicion their drugstore version is very similar as it also claims to lift 9 levels and my god it lifted the crap out of my hair. But I would definitely say get it if you can.

I've literally just done my roots so here is a quick snap to show you my at home results; sorry for the poor quality, my hair is still wet and I'm sitting in bed so the lighting is very poor!

How dark are you,im a natural very dark brown almost black brunette. But when i started to go grey i thought no dying it dark brown wlll look far too hard,So i went red,i always use Nice and Easy semi permanent Mahogany, easy to apply and my hair is a lovely shade of red,i get compliments from strangers.-10 years on no regrets.im red indefinitely.

Dark to blonde especially if you have a lot of dark left is risky in my book.i rarely
have any regrowth and do it about every 5 weeks. It seems to blend perfectly with my dark hair never have dark roots.I do have fair skin and blue eyes, not sure how red hair would be with an olive skin though.

cansu · 28/12/2020 20:21

Be careful. I have been colouring my hair for years at the hairdressers. I have had to stop having blond highlights as the conditions of my hair seemed to really badly deteriorate quite suddenly. I stopped using the blond and my hair has recovered. Putting bleach on like this will be very damaging.
