Can you find me a dressing gown at a price which doesn't require me to remortgage?

I'm turning 40 in a handful of days and at the will of the global pandemic, instead of riding a steam train through the rolling hills whilst pretending to be the heroine of a 1950s novel, I'm going to buy myself the perfect dressing gown.

I used to have a dressing gown but made the poor choice to raise a child to age 13 and failed to predict the stealth theft of all of my clothes. I feel the cold (I'm 39.9, I can say things like that now) and have lots of lovely socks, a pair of fab slippers and a pile of festive gingerbread. I need a dressing gown to finish my slow and graceful slide into middle age.

I had a vision of what I wanted: long and warm, with a hood, colourful, makes me say "ooh" when I see it. Google helpfully supplied the perfect robe:

www.amara.com/products/yaco-hooded-bathrobe-159

Except it's two hundred and fifty eight English pounds and much as I have considered not feeding the clothes-stealing, aforementioned teen, I feel a moral obligation to finish this particular quest to at least her 21st birthday.

Any ideas where to shop for the perfect dressing gown?

Sorry, I have no idea, but just wanted to say how much I love your writing. I seem to remember a thread about a skirt or dress once, that I said exactly the same thing on!

botemp · 27/12/2020 16:30

How close are you and the 13yo size wise? Missoni bathrobes come in a large range of sizes, including kids/teens and those are around half the price of the adult ones, otherwise exactly the same design and materials.

ShowOfHands · 27/12/2020 16:56

I am allowed one single solitary annual style and beauty thread as I posses neither @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I think the dress thread was my first foray. I love Prof Lupin BTW. Are you his biggest fan in stature or adoration?

DD and I are the same size (8) but she is taller. Half of £258 is still utterly ludicrous but I'll have a look. Thanks for the tip! I often buy children's shoes as they're cheaper. My current walking boots were 45% cheaper because they're marketed as for children but are exactly the same as the adult range.

Hold. The. Phone.

It's a 2 in 1 dressing gown. Part flammable passion killer, part costume for the local amdram production of Little Red Riding Hood on a post-covid, decimated budget.

Apparently it's this sort of thing or I have to recline on a bed with my robe half undone, full make up and a come hither look.

Where are the dressing gowns for washed up 39 year olds who are part way through a good book?

I am 39 and have this one! So snuggly.

I've also spent the day looking at depressing boring dressing gowns, I think the missoni one is beautiful.
Not as good but the best I've found www.tkmaxx.com/uk/en/home/bed+bath/towels+bath-mats/towels/blue-hooded-museum-towelling-robe/p/62063343

ShowOfHands · 27/12/2020 17:10
I do quite like that but it's VERY expensive still. Maybe I'm out of touch with how much they cost. I bought one for my Dad a couple of months ago and it was £40 and perfect for him.

I have a TK Maxx voucher actually. We're tier 4 as of yesterday so can't go into an actual shop. I don't like shopping but prefer to do it in person. I find it really hard online.

Love the idea of something snuggly. I'm cold all the time. For example, if this was all the colours of the rainbow, I'd be tempted:

I will look at men's too. Bonus is that they're roomy and they have better pockets.

These are very lovely but may lack on the snuggle factor onehundredstars.co.uk/collections/gowns

www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/dkny/signature-fleece-robe-425098#colcode=42509803 this looks cosy, depends how tall you are

starsinyourpies · 27/12/2020 17:25

Actually major flaw of the soho one is no pockets!

There's a woman who sells these locally and I was so tempted but you're right, not warm enough. They're beautiful though.

@fitflopqueen

I'm 5ft 4" (just!) but don't wear black. Looks very cosy though.

Adoration, rather than stature.

@Lougle

Not the same pattern, but similar colours ]]
You're right, good colours but the pattern sends my eyes squiffy!

White company?

lookingatthings · 27/12/2020 17:31

I've just bought a lovely one from these nibs. Winter stock is mostly sold out, but the spring patterns are released in mid January

Have a look at cyberjammies, I received 2 beautiful cotton robes this Christmas for wafting about in when the weather is warmer (or the heating’s on full blast!) but they do have warmer ones as well

knitforpeace.org.uk --- I reeled at the price of good warm woollen dressing gowns and am now knitting 12cm squares to make my own as per the knitforpeace pattern. Has the advantage that busy hands cannot keep dipping into the festive crisps. Can still manage chocolates.
