Can you find me a dressing gown at a price which doesn't require me to remortgage?

I'm turning 40 in a handful of days and at the will of the global pandemic, instead of riding a steam train through the rolling hills whilst pretending to be the heroine of a 1950s novel, I'm going to buy myself the perfect dressing gown.

I used to have a dressing gown but made the poor choice to raise a child to age 13 and failed to predict the stealth theft of all of my clothes. I feel the cold (I'm 39.9, I can say things like that now) and have lots of lovely socks, a pair of fab slippers and a pile of festive gingerbread. I need a dressing gown to finish my slow and graceful slide into middle age.

I had a vision of what I wanted: long and warm, with a hood, colourful, makes me say "ooh" when I see it. Google helpfully supplied the perfect robe:

www.amara.com/products/yaco-hooded-bathrobe-159

Except it's two hundred and fifty eight English pounds and much as I have considered not feeding the clothes-stealing, aforementioned teen, I feel a moral obligation to finish this particular quest to at least her 21st birthday.

Any ideas where to shop for the perfect dressing gown?

Bugger, the link didn't work... It's the same as this one tinyurl.com/HRdg40

Ooh I like cyberjammies. They have a robe like one Penny wears on Big Bang which I always covet. She only wears it once and I've tried searching for it!

Some people notice handsome men, beautiful babies and cute puppies. I take note of dressing gowns. This one looks pleasingly long.

Oh that is just superb. That's on my definitely maybe list. I have the same face before I've had my Marmite on toast.

Rainbows and pigs one is bloody marvellous... (as is marmite on toast)

The White Company velour robes with a towelling lining are fantastically soft and have a hood. I've just got my second one for Christmas. They are £70 but if you sign up to their website you often get voucher codes. I had my last one for five years before it needed replacing. I have a 100 Hundred Stars one too but rarely wear it. They are very sheer so have to be worn over something. I tend to potter in my robe in the morning after my shower and the 100 hundred stars one shows more than I'd like. It's such a shame because I had silk pyjamas once which weren't so sheer. Their robes aren't silk but feel like it.

That missoni one looks Like style over substance?
I also back the White Company for the best every snuggly robes in pure cotton. I have the velour mentioned above and The hydrocotton.. all lovely

MenaiMna · 27/12/2020 17:53

Can you see? Three missoni velour bathsheets from tkmaxx and a ten quid pattern and you're set. I made a very stylish extra long robe for the extra tall husband last year from two IKEA bathsheets and two handtowels (no hood). Quite a simple project.

HelloDulling · 27/12/2020 17:55

A friend has this, it is the cosiest thing I have ever worn. www.marksandspencer.com/fleece-long-dressing-gown/p/clp60471313?color=BERRY

I’ve had a Pip Studio dressing gown for years now and it has lasted really well. I love it.

If this link works I have this robe, I've had it at least 12 years, I love it. Although I definitely got it on a deal as was only about £40 ( or things were cheaper then). Washes really well and doesn't give me static shocks like most robes. I did think I might replace it after a hair dye incident but I have just learnt to ignore the colourful patch on the should which won't come out.

ShowOfHands · 27/12/2020 18:06

I do like the personal recommendations. I'm browsing through all the suggestions and links.

I am half tempted to make my own. I'm currently making dungarees.

I hadn't heard of missoni before today and need new towels... Love their colours.

I bought DD a Christy one for Christmas, I have an earlier version of this www.marksandspencer.com/fleece-long-dressing-gown/p/clp60471313?color=BERRY, it must be 10 years old and still going strong.

TheFoz · 27/12/2020 18:30

What’s the sizing like on the White Company robes? I’ve never owned a robe in my life but I think I’m ready for that foray!

Hoppinggreen · 27/12/2020 19:55

Quite generous TheFoz. I am a size 16 and have an L with plenty of room in it

FindHungrySamurai · 27/12/2020 20:12

John Lewis High Pile robes are immensely cosy. DH and I and DM and DMIL all have them.Annoyingly small range of wishy washy colours at the moment.

cruelladepoppins · 27/12/2020 20:33

OK, I know it's not multicoloured, and it's only polyester fleece, but it's lovely and long and warm. I have the hoodless one in a dark purple. When I have to upgrade it I am going to go for this one

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2020 20:48

I've got that purple M&S one, a present from DP a few years ago. It's nice and cosy, but the polyester means I go from too cold to boiling as soon as I put it on.

whatisheupto · 27/12/2020 21:00

See OP I feel the cold too and I would like to tell you that what you actually want is a hooded large cardigan, not a dressing gown. If you get one made of proper wool you will be so toasty. This one is totally dreamy:

www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/cardigans/donegal-hooded-coatigan

A dressing gown made of towelling (cotton) will do bugger all to keep you warm.

AnnaMagnani · 27/12/2020 21:02

I bought DH a dressing gown which cost the annual GDP of a small country.

It didn't look that nice when it arrived and it didn't last.

Meanwhile my Lidl dressing gown from the Aisle of Random is still going strong and exactly what I wanted Blush

TheFoz · 27/12/2020 23:17

Thank you @Hoppinggreen, they look very cosy.

Victoria’s Secret has been suggested to me recently, does anyone have any experience?
