Ears pierced again, scar tissue?

Hi everyone. First post here on mumsnet Xmas Smile

Not a biggie but looking for advice. I had my ears pinned back over 30 years ago. Had my ears pierced 2 years later. All went fine, but when I tried to change the earrings after the suggested time, I couldn't get one of them back in. No pain or infection or anything. Went back to the piercer and she said there was scar tissue, so I let them both heal up. Not sure if scar tissue from the previous operation or not. There was a little ball of scar tissue inside one which has now gone.

Now over 30 years later, I really want to be able to wear earrings! Would I be asking for trouble to get them pierced again?
Clip ons just don't seem comfortable.
Cheers for any advice.

No I think they would be fine but you must go to a piercer who uses a needle and not a gun!
Iirc Sali Hughes had the same issue and repiercing enabled her to wear earrings again,

Thanks, GrimDamnFanjo, you have given me hope! Merry Christmas.

I had secondary holes repierced a couple of years ago. Definitely go to a proper piercer . I was told that going through old scar tissue makes it a tad uncomfortable and yes it did hurt! I found it really uncomfortable to sleep for nearly a year afterwards too, so it’s a long term project! However, I love having 2 holes now so feel it was worth it

Thanks, VanCleefArpels! I LOVE my sleep so that's put me off slightly! Wonder if it would have been less painful to do a new hole near the old one? Anyway, I will go and chat to a piercer in the new year and see.

The piercing in my left ear closed up as I largely stopped wearing earrings when my children were small. I had a new piercing made near the old one, and it was fine. The thought of piercing through scar tissue makes me wince!

I got my ears pierced at seven. A new Headmistress joined the school soon after and banned all earrings. My piercings closed up. Years later I had to have surgery on the back of my left ear which left me with scar tissue in that ear. Two years later I got my ears pierced again. The lady doing the piercing back very slightly to avoid the scar tissue
I have not had an issue once I wear silver or gold earrings. I do avoid heavy earrings for long though as the piercings are not as far into the ear lobes as most peoples.

Thanks, @purplecorkheart!

How does the piercer know then where the scar tissue is, to avoid it? Can they just feel it or see it?

Any piercers out there?

If you’ve had a piercing that has closed up that is scar tissue

lcdododo · 28/12/2020 18:44

As above, they must use a needle and not a gun.

I had exactly the same thing.

Over time, the scar tissue will decrease but never fully go

They will re-pierce in a different area

Thanks all.

It's the scar tissue from the previous operation that I'm concerned about, not really from the piercing. I will investigate.
