I’ve just bought this dress in the sale

www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/second-female-mulle-dress?category=sale-dresses&color=095&type=REGULAR&quantity=1

It’s not for everyone, I recognise that. But I bloody LOVE paisley, I LOVE sack-style dresses (I’m tall and slim so they work well for me) and I LOVE balloon-y sleeves that give nice armpit circulation. 🤗 I also like a bit of pale orange which works with my colouring ! Honestly I know it’s probably going to make most people run a mile but it’s just my cup of tea.

At full price it’s obviously wtf but at Warehouse/Oasis price in the sale it’s one I just couldn’t resist.

BUT... can I wear it in autumn/winter or do I need to wait for spring/early summer? Summer styling is obvious, trainers or flat sandals. In winter I would need tights obviously and I have a bit of a horror of any non-black opaques. But black opaques would be weird with the dress, right? Even if I wore tan or brown boots almost up to the knee so you couldn’t see much of the tights?? Would a textured cable knit work in a different (gulp) colour (and by ‘colour’ I mean grey, cream, faun...?)

Basically, is there any way of making it work in colder weather with a chunky cardi etc?

Please don’t tell me if you loathe the dress!! I really do know it’s an ahem unusual one. But I love the look of it and I am SO SICK of wearing boring ‘at home’ clothes and/or buying safe stuff that I kind of like well enough but don’t get a rush of enjoyment from. 2020 has been shit and I JUST WANT TO WEAR A DRESS I LOVE ASAP.

Any styling advice (unless it’s ‘send it straight back, it’s hideous and looks like 1970s curtains’) would be much appreciated.

I’m enjoying the dress love on here!

i wish wish wish I had tan knee boots but only have dark brown ones (I have tan ankle boots tho) so will have to see if they work or if they’re too dark. I’m hoping my taupe knee ones might be another option.

It is a lovley dress! I would by it myself but I'm not tall 😔 long tan boots would look nice with a chunky cardigan

MrsA2017 · 27/12/2020 13:53

I like it - I’d wear it with a black leather slightly cropped jacket and black boots. Maybe a cream scarf if it’s cold.

Yes I'd wear that with rust / burgundy opaques and tan / brown boots. Well, I wouldn't because it would look awful on me but I'm sure it will look fab on you OP Grin

Thank you for the reminder about the Anthropologie sale though - I've just been on and nabbed a perfect pair of trainers!

I like it too. I think black won't work with it, I think you have to be a bit careful with just defaulting to that. Maybe an oatmeal, chunky knit. Not underneath it though, that would spoil the dress and cut. Or keep it for Summer, it's very much pottering about in Provençal markets.

White stuff had some opaque tights before Christmas in a good range of colours including burgundy, OP.

Walkacrossthesand · 27/12/2020 15:04

I got them in terracotta which might work with your dress and tan ankle boots?

CharitySchmarity · 28/12/2020 16:44

I like everything about that dress about the neckline, and that's only because it wouldn't suit me (my neck is too short for anything that high). I love the colour. As it happens, I've just been thinking about how I could "winterise" a new yellow and white patterned skirt, so I understand your idea.

I think this would look great worn over a long-sleeved top and matching tights in either dark blue or tan/burnt orange, preferably with brown or tan boots. It might work with black, but I think everything else (tights, boots, long sleeves) would need to be black. I tend not to like wearing small amounts of black in one place with no other black to balance it (which annoyed me no end when I had a black watch strap!) I also like orange and yellow with grey, by the way.
