Dandruff and dry scalp

I am having a terrible time with dandruff. I wash my hair about once every 3 days of so. After about 5 minutes after washing/rinsing my hair - I feel a tightening sensation on my scalp. If I was to feel my scalp with my fingers - I feel lumps of flakes. Looking in the mirror, there are lumps of flakes. It looks dreadful and it feels awful.

My shampoo of choice is a coal tar shampoo. I think the coal tar helps. Without it, it can be worse.

I used other shampoos before like cheaper anti dandruff shampoos like I remember buying a tea tree anti dandruff shampoo before and that was awful.

Would anyone here have any recommendations or help to clear this up? Would spending money on an expensive brand like redken help?

I spent months using TGel, H & shoulders etc and my scalp was driving me insane.
Nizorel finally cleared it up. It’s behind the counter at boots. Strong stuff. Now just have to use it once or twice a month to keep it at bay but use normal shampoo the rest of the time.

DD2's scalp is like this. She's 11 and we've found rotating between different shampoos works best for her. She uses the Body Shop ginger shampoo, a Head & Shoulders itchy scalp one and Polytar.

Dandruff is correlated with sugar consumption. Cut down your sugar intake.

Body shop ginger shampoo has been a success for us too

E45 shampoo is good at reducing itchiness (as is balnum) but I guess it depends on what the underlying problem is

Might be worth a chat with your GP if nothing works

MooGoo shampoo has really helped my scalp. I was using really harsh shampoos, and realised that I needed to get something moisturising. I've been using it for about a year, still rotate with other shampoo every now and then, and it has really made a difference.

So many suggestions here for some shampoos. Some new to me, some not.

I tried nizoral before and selsun and they didn't do much for me. I tried other shampoos too. I guess I'm apprehensive spending more money on a new shampoo that may or may not work.
