Anyone else just stopped buying nice clothes?

Only thing I've bought in the last 3 months is a coat and some lounge sets and baggy sweatshirts.
Saw a lovely dogtooth jacket/blazer today in Tesco, picked it up because it was reduced to £20 and after a few seconds of thinking were I could wear it to I put it back down because where am I going? No pubs or restaurants open,no events no parties no nothing Sad just buy a couple of comfy bits for when I'm home from work. I'm actually in my work uniform more than I'm in normal clothes. Make ups the same! Can't remember the last time I wore make up because I'm covered up with a mask Sad
One time in my life where I've got a bit of disposable income to buy clothes after years of making do and sorting the kids out first and there's no where to wear the bloody nice clothes so I think what's the point!
Sorry for the rant just feeling quite shitty lately.

Sorry you feel low OP Flowers. It's so understandable.

I'm the same re: the clothes. I haven't bought any clothes I'd wear out of the house this year, because I'm not going out and have lots of lovely bits I'd love to get use of but have nowhere to go to justify bothering putting them on. I do think ultimately the saving money is a huge, huge positive though? Savings are in themselves a luxury and you've done well to be in a position you have them.

If you fancy a bit of shopping for shopping's sake why not look for things you can use such as nice, smart loungewear, skincare, a coat for walks etc.
I did that early on and it feels much better being at home in my 'smart' loungewear.

Ultimately we'll be free of this eventually OP, and it will be so lovely when we are, we just need to hold on! Flowers

I have to confess that I sometimes dress as if I were at the office just because I am so fed up with "comfies". When all this is over, I intend to expunge the words "lounge wear" and "joggers" from my vocabulary!

Shitonthebloodything · 19/12/2020 05:19

I haven't bought anything this year except some replacement cheap black leggings and a lounge wear set. No point.

I still wear makeup but am working through my cheap stuff.

Spending all my money on food it seems.

EmmanuelleMakro · 19/12/2020 05:22

Same here and am ruthlessly purging my clothes as well.

likeamillpond · 19/12/2020 05:27

Same here.
I haven't even taken the price tags off the few things I did buy at beginning of the year.
What's the point?

Monday55 · 19/12/2020 05:29

Since the first lockdown in March I've pretty much been rotating through the same 5 or so outfits. Lots of stuff I had bought in the 2020 January sale haven't been worn yet. I might sell or donate some clothes in the new year.

Attictroll · 19/12/2020 05:30

I wfh and have bought a few brighter jumpers as look better on endless calls than all the black I own. I have bought Sainsbury’s thermals ands pair of looser fit jeans 😀

But I miss dressing up and shopping. I even put proper makeup on to go to the play park last weekend as I knew I’d see people!

JaceLancs · 19/12/2020 08:39

I’ve bought a lot less - but do go out to work every day still
It’s the social dressing up I miss - no meals out, drinks, meeting up with friends, no holidays or weekends away
I’ve not managed to lose any weight during lockdown so still have stuff unworn I’m trying to diet into, at least I’ve not gained much so other clothes still fit

Frostythesnowwoman · 19/12/2020 08:43

Yes me too - lost some weight in first lockdown, went down a size but have just bought lots of practical stuff - t shirts/cropped trousers for summer, jeans/jumpers for winter, wear the same things constantly and always have the thought ‘what’s the point’ of wearing a particular thing.

I did buy one nice skirt though as I love wearing thick wooly tights on cold days Smile

CherryPavlova · 19/12/2020 08:44

I’ve actually stocked up a little. I make not overly bothered about fashion of new outfits but have bought quite a lot of wardrobe staples in case my trusted designs and shops sink under the combination of Covid19 and Brexit.
Hopefully I’ll get to wear something a bit smarter than dog walking clothes again one day.

AlwaysLatte · 19/12/2020 08:47

Yup. And the wardrobe I use for party/occasion clothes hasn't been opened for weeks, I've just realised. I'm living mostly in jeans at the moment. I'm going to have to go all out for a small/mostly Zoom Christmas!

AlwaysLatte · 19/12/2020 08:51

It is a good time for sales/planning ahead though. My stepson is getting married next year (after it was cancelled this year) and I bought a beautiful outfit, bag and hat from Debenhams (before they announced) from this season's summer wedding range. So maybe buy yourself to wear specifically to celebrate when you can? Something to look forward toThanks

Dailyhandtowelwash · 19/12/2020 08:51

I feel totally apathetic and have bought one item of clothing all year. So I get it. I got myself a clutch of beauty advent calendars this year as a lockdown treat, and because no spend on anything all year on anything else made me feel like I could justify the money, but I’m finding it a little bit dispiriting because it’s just reminding me how pointless make up feels right now too.

Littleguggi · 19/12/2020 08:55

I feel the same, I love buying new clothes and generally if I see something I like I buy it without any hesitation. But this year, all I've brought is boring essentials. I only dress up and do my makeup when going out to work once or twice a week!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/12/2020 08:57

I bought some lovely summer dresses, as we were allowed out in the summer and the weather was so good. Hardly anything since, but I did buy a new coat and boots. I always think coats and boots are worth spending on, as we spend so much time in them.

My next purchase will be some wellies. Exciting times.

Littleguggi · 19/12/2020 08:58

On a positive, it has made me appreciate being in my own skin more and not having to wear makeup all the time. Plus it's made me appreciate my clothes and having good quality clothes as opposed to disposable useless clothes that are considered the latest trends.

Ponks · 19/12/2020 09:04

Early in the first lockdown, when we thought it would all be over very soon, I bought a new smart jacket for work. Ha. Still got the tags on. Most of what I've bought this year is fitness gear, Sweaty Betty have done well I'm sure.

shamus2020 · 19/12/2020 09:06

Glad I'm not alone. I love going shopping it's my favourite hobbie Confused nothing makes me more happy than travelling to the nearest city and walking around the shops until my feet hurt. Picking up bits that catch me eye and taking them to changing rooms and making my decisions. Instead I've gone for comfy bits online which just doesn't have the same excitement Sad

I think the only thing I have bought all year is a pair of Xmas pyjamas.

What’s the point?

thebabessavedme · 19/12/2020 09:10

Last week i bought a lovely dress for xmas day from a local independent boutique, I will be wearing it even if it is just dh and me.

I do wear make up everyday, Its part of my routine of selfcare and I feel better for it, I bought some lovely dresses in the summer and a new coat, its lifted my mood to wear it, its damp and grey and drizzly outside and just stepping out wearing it feels like a treat.

I think doing anything that lifts your mood can only be a good thing right now.

DailyPotion · 19/12/2020 09:11

I did for a while but I have discovered that this year's flowy dresses make excellent comfy lounge wear and it does make you feel better to make a bit of effort.

DilysPrice · 19/12/2020 09:25

I’ve bought a couple of nice jumpers for WFH. I do a lot of video conferencing so I still put some makeup on (hypothyroidism means I need to paint my eyebrows on so once I’ve done that I might as well do the rest). I bought a v useful cheap maxi dress for summer.

I might get a new winter coat, and dig out the lovely Geox waterproof knee boots I bought in the January sales for my now non-existent commute and wear them to the park.

Sweaty Betty must be raking it in this year. All the S&B types with no other outlet. I’m too much of a cheapskate but I did get a bunch of very good running gear from H&M.

ElspethFlashman · 19/12/2020 09:45

The only things I've bought this year have been pyjamas, and loungewear.

Even on the odd occasion I have to go into town its not as if people have xray specs to see through my coat. And I'm wearing a mask too. Literally 90% of my body is covered.

The other day I went in to town and realised all I had to do was put on eyeliner and mascara, and a pair of heeled ankle boots! But the clothes underneath were basically crap. But who saw?? I don't even think I bothered to wear a bra! Grin

I am leaning into it now though. Am giving myself permission to buy any loungewear that I really really like, within budget. It's not as if I won't get wear out of it.

Floisme · 19/12/2020 09:54

I've not bought as much because online shopping mostly just annoys me, but I'm still wearing clothes I like every day. It makes me happy.
But I hardly wear make up now, even when zooming or on rare trips out, and I don't miss it at all.

It's really crystallised what I do for my own enjoyment and what I (used to) do because it's expected.

dudsville · 19/12/2020 09:54

I'm also working my way through less preferable but absolutely fine makeup. I have continued to shop, and like the pp I found the summer dresses were really comfortable home wear. Overall my home wear has really improved. Used to be on days off I'd just wear crappy stuff but I've bought some really comfortable trousers.
