Your perfume heartwrenchers: smells from another time

I'd like a thread about two types of perfume:

  • The ones you wore "back when" that you can't smell without feeling your heart wrench, and
  • The ones that were pulled. RIP, favourite fragrances.

Mine:

  • That turquoise Ralph Lauren one. I was 14 and my gran bought it for me as my very first perfume. I remember loads of us wore it as young teens.
  • Anna Sui Classic: I remember my mum gave this to me one christmas maybe when I was 16 or 17, but the scent of it now is just beyond my reach. I'm tempted to buy a bottle just as a reminder.
  • JPG Classique: I bought this for myself aged 19 when I emigrated and got my first grown up job. I cant smell it without being taken back to the girl I once was.
  • Next came a few trashy Cacharel perfumes: Amor Amor and Scarlett. I was 21 or 22, carefree, working in the south of france. I like how back then I just chose what smelled good to me, without thinking about effect or complexity or anything.
  • Heure Bleu: when I was a child, my best friends house smelled of something, something sweet and comforting. It wasnt until I was in a perfume shop three years ago and smelled this that it hit me in the heart. Her mother must have worn this perfume. I smelled my wrist as I walked home, the power of the memory was overwhelming.

My RIP favourites:

  • Sicily by Dolce and Gabbana: I thought this smelled amazing, glossy and quite glamorous but not aggressive. Why the hell did they pull it?! And they said they were bringing it back, so where is it?!
  • Love Chloe: this was quite a weird little perfume. It was somehow rice-like but also not sweet. I loved it. As usual they put it out there for 3 years or something and then pulled it, replacing it with some other sweet floral thing.

Charlie Blue - my first 'big girl' body spray that my mum bought me for Christmas one year.

Tommy Girl - long summer holidays from school, house parties, giggling over which boy you fancied that week

White Linen, Estee Lauder - childhood, my mum

Burberry Touch - first dating my now-DH, who at the time was the quintessential 'bad boy'

Amor Amor by Cacharel - spent a year abroad having the time of my life

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir - wore this on my wedding day

I have found vintage perfumes on Etsy. Worth having a search if you're yearning for a golden oldie.

Time machines

Max Factor Electrique, Primitif & Hypnotique which my best friend & I worked our way up through in school with our pocket money.
Tabu, brought as a present by a South African pen friend who I found by chucking a letter in a bottle into the sea.
Revlon Intimate, late teens & my wedding.
Youth Dew, my late mum’s perfume.
No5 & Arpege, my constant companions for years.

Sadly missed
Ecusson by Jean D’Albret, my love for most of my young days.
Miss Dior, the original not the awful imposter they pass off now, so sophisticated.
Sortilege.

Another Anais Anais memory here. I wore this for years - from being in uni right through to marrying and the birth of my dd. One smell takes me right back there, Happy, happy days.

Growing up Tommy Girl and So were my go too. My heart wrenching one is Red Door, and L'eau de temps, they remind me of my beautiful late mother. The scent makes me cry-very triggering.
My ex was very good at buying perfume so Jimmy Choo anything reminds me of the bitter end to my marriage.
There was a nice Herve Leger original that I can't find anymore.
Gucci flora and Narciso are perfumes I bought myself for myself, for the first time so they remind me of my freedom and single hood.

God Deci Dela. not thought of that for years - I used to absolutely adore it but it had to be the pink bottle.
Just looked on ebay and it's a fortune!

Does anyone remember Gap Dream? It was in small metal canisters in the 90s along with a few others. It was by the tills in Gap. It reminds me of being 14 and getting ready for parties.

Jo Malone Spritzer, it was fresh and lovely and I miss that one.

I’m with the pp missing the original Fendi - the only thing I’ve found that vaguely evokes it is the Monotheme Black Oud.

Takes me back: Allure - a friend used to wear it but we were both going through strange days back then so I don’t think I’d want to wear it now. Eden - right back to getting my degree results, a very bittersweet time! Sunflowers - worn during the very hot summer my dad died so that would also not be one to re-visit.

Happier ones: Coco Channel, Obsession and Amarige - all those big shouty 1980s fragrances just take me right back to being about 18 and trying in testers and Monet earrings in our local Debenhams! Grin

Yes to Theorema!! Loved this one. And Nina Ricci L'air du temps

I'm joining you at the Love Chloe wake, OP. Divine and I'm baffled as to why it was discontinued. I've got a tiny bottle left I'm eking out.

D&G light blue reminds me of the summer I turned 18 2005. I was living in a flat with my brother & our friend, we had a lot of fun out all the time, no responsibilities.

I bloody loved Armani Sensi, no idea why they discontinued it as it was beautiful, just smelt really warm. I bought the 100ml in duty free on the way to my first girls holiday in Corfu, I’ve smelt a few that had similar notes but jst not quite the same Sad
