Topshop, Miss Selfridge, etc

I was just reading that the Arcadia group that owns Topshop and a few others is nearing collapse. I am sure there are lots of reasons BUT is it also not the case that those shops have lost their way? I think Topshop used to be a really desirable shop for teenagers and early 20s but not as much now. My dd is 14 and she never goes there, and neither do her friends. I think we have bought one item from there but that was because it came up online when we were looking for something specific.

Unfortunately it’s overpriced and I find it so same-y each season.

Miss Selfridge is the best for me out of the lot but they had a dress in the summer in the exact same print as I bought a skirt in 2010. I found an old photo of me wearing it to check. It’s always the same - floral girlie.

Topshop I have struggled with over the years. It’s never been a favourite. For my friends that used to shop there, I think now, they’d rather spend a little more and get decent quality or go cheaper to the online fast fashion like MissGuided etc,

I feel incredibly sorry for the employees of the Arcadia group. Phillip Green is an odious toad, who despite his inept ways of doing business (and his portly frame) seems to be able to swim and not sink. Dreadful.

I agree! When I was at uni (over 15 years ago! ) it used to be the place to go for going out clothes and jeans. I still go but when I do I'm surprised to see women more in my age group than teenagers. I think teenagers would prefer Boohoo/pretty little think type online shops for clothes now?

Phillip Green will be ok, like the cockroach he is. They never die. It's the employees I feel for, they will get shafted like the BHS ones did.

I like Top Shop t shirts and jeans. I don't think their market is teenagers any more, tbh. It will certainly be the end if an era if they disappear.

You are right. It was the go to shop when I was a teenager and at university. My dd (17) hasn't ever shopped there.

I decided several years ago that Philip Green would never get another penny from me and, as far as I know, he hasn't.

But I can't feel any satisfaction about this either, not when I read about Pretty Little Thing selling dresses for 8p yesterday. It doesn't exactly sound like the good guys have won.

You are right that teenagers are probably not even their target market anymore.

And yes - I think a lot of teens either go for Boohoo and the like (don’t get me started on the ethics of that) or shops like H&M or Monki (very popular in our house) or Urban Outfitters.

I used to love going to topshop during uni and spending £25 on one of their little clubbing dresses

Now I swear by their jeans and their maternity wear is brilliant

Staff are awful though. The ones in One New Change and Oxford Circus always have really awful attitudes
