New work wardrobe - will have to all be online

parrotonmyshoulder · 28/11/2020 15:30

I’m starting a new job and need a whole new wardrobe for it, having been wearing very scruffy/casual for years.
I will get a new hair cut too - advice on that in another thread maybe.
I need comfortable but smartish. I interviewed in black trousers, a silky floral top and a black blazer, but want less formal than that for most days. A bit of colour would be nice.
I am size 10, 5’6 and 45.
Any ideas of easy to order online clothes please.

Also, can I have some advice on trousers? Are they ‘supposed’ to be short now? And if so, can’t you wear socks?

John Lewis are good. Click and collect to Waitrose overnight. If you want basics Uniqlo is good. Haven’t used them for returns though. I could go on. Most retailers like M and S etc are fine too and returning is generally straightforward.

Trousers dont matter for online unless you shoeing your whole body

parrotonmyshoulder · 28/11/2020 16:27

Oh I meant the shopping would all have to be online, not me. I’ll be in person. Better wear trousers.
Thanks

Tkmaxx have loads of Ralph Lauren shirts in atm with free delivery this weekend... Stock up!

And congrats on the new job

Have a look at Me and Em.

Annebronte · 28/11/2020 17:11

Massimo Dutti might also be worth a look.

trike20 · 28/11/2020 18:22

I thought you meant you’d be online too! So lipstick, bold earrings or necklace, simply cut blouse or jumper - it’s all about the graphics.

Massimo Dutti, Cos and Uniqlo have everything you need for a smart/casual working wardrobe.

I think it is easier to think in terms of outfits from the start. So one pair of trousers might have 2 tops that so with them and accessories too.
To get outfits it can easier to buy from one brand or 2 buy a key piece and build around that.
What do you need practically, are you at a desk, meeting clients, making site visits or going to court?
What is the image you want to present?
I like Mint Velvet this season it is trendy and easy but it depends on what you need.
Uniqlo is great for basics and I like the idea of building a look round s couple of Ralph Lauren blouses from TKMax too.

I would build around trousers like this, modern and easy.

parrotonmyshoulder · 28/11/2020 19:32

Thanks for the ideas. Some are a bit out of my price range I think, as I have to start from scratch. I have ordered some tops from tkmaxx so far. Nervous about the trousers! Not sure how to wear wide legged ones. Feel they might be a bit trendy for me.

May have accidentally had to buy a very nice leAther jacket while browsing TKMaxx. Thank you.

Wide leg trousers are super easy to pair with simple, neat merino jumpers from Uniqlo or t-shirts from Cos.

But if you don't feel at ease in them don't get any. There are lots of slim cropped trousers out there which look good with a more oversized or detailed top.

Zara do great work blazers at a good price point. I do think Uniqlo would give you a lot of what you need, if you choose either black or navy (or brown or grey or khaki) as your base neutral and build up from there it's a good starting point.

reallyrainyday · 28/11/2020 20:52

Try Next clearance online - lots of great prices on there.

Squidsister · 28/11/2020 23:01

Uniqlo do some nice work trousers reasonably priced - the smart ankle length ones. I have a pair with the check pattern, they are comfy and keep their shape. I’d recommend getting black / navy / patterned and then you have a selection to match different tops.

Can we ask what's the industry?

parrotonmyshoulder · 29/11/2020 06:55

Education.
Thanks. I’ve ordered some Uniqlo and some m&s trousers. Still looking for a less formal jacket/ cardigan (?) than the blazer I’ve got.
