Would anyone care to join me to discuss fashion for apple shapes? What are you wearing at the minute that you find flattering?

I'm a tall apple shape, size 18ish, but wear anything from a 14 to a 20, depending on what it is. Mainly 18 though.

I've just ordered some loungewear from Hush. I don't normally go for joggers, but trying something new!

5’4” Apple with size 6 hips, size 14 waist and size 16 bust. I live in Forgotten Tribe Harems- the Low crotch variety. Only thing that’s actually ever given me a waist!

TotalBitch · 23/11/2020 22:47

Those are amazing @PirateCatQueen.

I am an apple, I am literally a barrel on legs, I tend to live in crop trouser, trainers a shell top and a hoodie, or a pop over blouse, anything that skims the belly is good in my book, but I'm peri-menopausal and my belly seems to be ever expanding.

PirateCatQueen · 24/11/2020 14:47

They are so comfy @TotalBitch. There are lightweight ones too in various colours/patterns, really versatile.

Musmerian · 24/11/2020 20:52

@RandomMess - the Trinny and Susannah thing confused me. I’m 5ft2, narrow shoulders, hips and slim thighs and legs and flat bum. Huge (34H ) boobs and 37 inch tummy. Can wear size 12 bottoms as hips and bum so small. All weight goes on boobs and stomach. Apple surely?

RandomMess · 24/11/2020 21:09

There on line thing isn't as good as the original book Sad

I was more meaning in the book it tells you which clothes to wear for your shape - I wasn't convinced I was Apple but those are the clothes that suit me IYSWIM?

Somewhere to go to look through suggestions.

I'm always a bit stuck because I am SO short Sad

Saltisford · 24/11/2020 21:33

I’ve found that shirt dresses with a tie waist (That you knot yourself) are quite flattering... I bought one from Monki

Musmerian · 24/11/2020 21:34

@RandomMess - ok I’ve done lots of online measury quizzes and I’m definitely an apple. The wrap dresses work because boobs are huge and they seem to skim over my stomach. I really could do with losing a stone though but really can’t be arsed.

KeithLeMonde · 24/11/2020 21:43

I am a very classic apple I think - long legs, slim hips, flat bum, large-ish boobs and ALL my weight on my waist. I'm probably a size 10 in jeans apart from my waist which realistically is more of a 16.

I find winter easier except that jeans are uncomfortable - but I can look good in skinny jeans, an oversized jumper and chunky boots to balance top and bottom halves.

Summer is really tough. I actually look better in my swimwear (strapless black one piece with structure around the middle) than in any form of clothes. Off to read the summer thread.

RandomMess · 24/11/2020 21:47

I keep thinking if I can get DH to pay to have his varicose vein done I can justify have a partial tummy tuck for my twin skin, I'd still be apple shaped bit I would no longer look pregnant...

NannyOgg66 · 24/11/2020 21:53

I’m apple shaped with big bust I wear dresses a lot that have a low neck, can wear camisole under when needed and are more of an empire line with high waist. Because my bust is big ,34G I feel a bit top heavy wearing lose long tops and leggings etc but would recommend this if bust isn’t quite so large to show off your legs. My legs are ok for an old bird but I do feel like a big body and little skinny legs at times as my calves really are skinny!

MustDust · 24/11/2020 22:00

I'm a definite apple, huge boobs and belly, tiny bum and hips. I just look a state, I've no idea what to wear so literally live in skinny jeans, T-shirts and trainers.

Saltisford · 24/11/2020 22:27

I’ve read online that I have a ‘B Belly’. Does anyone else have this? Literally like their torso is a capital B. So hard to dress!

DeeandraReynolds · 24/11/2020 23:41

Oh B belly makes sense! I do have big boobs and a bit of a belly...but there is a little bit of waist in between, so not sure that is me exactly..? I do find it very hard to dress my shape. I'm in jeggings and a hoodie today. Not my finest fashion hour! Will make more effort tomorrow, not that I'm likely to see anyone but hey ho!

Destinysdaughter · 24/11/2020 23:56

I have found my people! Big boobs, a tummy but flat bum, no hips and skinny legs. It is a really hard shape to dress and I feel I can't even show off my good legs as then I just look too top heavy. I have found either straight leg or bootcut trousers work best as they balance out the top half. The only skirts I wear are long ones as medium ones just accentuate my tummy and make me look frumpy.

Frequentflier · 25/11/2020 06:57

What do apples with small busts wear? I need a uniform. Long lose tops and leggings?

Like a fat hourglass?

NannyOgg66 · 25/11/2020 09:55

Few posters on here saying peri menopause has made them apple shaped, I can totally relate, I used to be hour glass and beauty of that is staying hourglass no matter how much weight you gain so even when overweight you have a bit of a waist I still felt feminine whereas at times now I feel like a bloke with a beer belly grin]. Not to mention bloating (which gets worse with meno) makes it worse. This is one of the reasons I live in dresses as no waistband! I do wear skirts but they cannot have any gathering or pleats or thick waistband that accentuates belly. I wear a semi fitted top over it that accentuates bust and the very small area of high waist under bust that isn’t fat! Does anyone else have trouble with knickers ? Mine start to fall down my hips because I need a 14 at least for belly but no bum means there is a lot of loose fabric at back, if I go down a size it cuts in to the bottom of my belly iyswim. @Musmerian sounds like we are similar, I’m having total nightmare at moment trying to find a waterproof long coat that fits, size I buy to fit bust usually 16 is huge on hips and thighs as cut for more traditional pear or hourglass.
I also would much rather have a huge bum than a tummy as it’s healthier !

Saltisford · 25/11/2020 09:55

If you imagine from the side, your tummy area has a tight band around the middle (kind of where your waist is but still on the big side - roughly around the belly button) and then podgy fat above and below! Not really hourglass as the hips are still slim in comparison. Growing up I was called two bellies!!!!!!!!!

Bluebell79 · 25/11/2020 09:56

What style winter coats do you all find flattering? I have a short puffer type, figured it showed off my thin legs, it needs replacing but have read to avoid the puffer type.

NannyOgg66 · 25/11/2020 10:07

@Bluebell79 I’ve got a couple of 3/4 Coats that are flared A line style skirt more fitted at top with a belt I find this is flattering but quite dressy for everyday. I’ve got a long puffa coat that makes me look huge it’s awful but warm. Having trouble trying to find waterproof down type coat that fits ok on top and doesn’t swamp me on bum and legs.

Frequentflier · 25/11/2020 10:20

@Bluebell79 I tried this Uniqlo coat on recently, and found it flattering for the belly area. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-hybrid-down-hooded-coat-429461.html

Luckyelephant1 · 25/11/2020 14:31

I guess the good thing with coats at the moment is that the trend is to have the buttons undone (I know this is stupid when very cold but it also allows more space for thick jumpers and scarves etc). So I think most structured/tailored style midi length coats that fit well around the shoulders and arms look really good on apple frames (with small boobs anyway, sorry I'm not familiar with big boob issues)

I find you have to be very careful with a-line or fit and flare coats because unless they have exactly the right amount of flare from exactly the right bit of your midsection, they often result in emphasising the love handles a lot, same goes for dresses as well.

Musmerian · 28/11/2020 17:58

@NannyOgg66 - it’s interesting how different bodies can be even when they sound the same. I’m a size 10 in Marks pants even with my huge tum and the fit fine. I wear lots of wrap dresses with camisoles so I disagree with the earlier poster who said all apples look terrible in them. With big boobs if things are too loose then you just look huge all over. The two things I’ve worn a lot this year are two slinky faux wrap dresses from French Connection that are clingy in a flattering way and M and S magic shaping high waisted skinny jeans which are ace.

Zebracat · 29/11/2020 00:52

Hi. An obese apple here. What I find most difficult is sizing. Knickers are the worst. I’ve got and wear everything from a 12 to a 22. Big ones do tend to fall off. Slinky ones fall off. High waist looks appalling. Bikinis fall down. I like cocoon dresses, the trouble is that I loathe all tights and yes I have tried snags. Size down and the crutch is at my knees, size up and they are in a puddle at my ankles. I’m quite tempted to try
Maternity tights and leggings. Has anyone else resorted to this?
Also commonest knitwear fit for years has been boxy. Who suits that? I look terrible in a boxy top, need them longer length but fitted.
I have found that bias cut skirts suit, they tend to be elasticated at the waist And then straight to the hip. And a longer
top sorts out the belly.
It is also true that apples look good naked. I am always surprised by the fleshiness of pear shaped women. Although I would swap in a heartbeat.
