Apple shape fashion chat thread?

Would anyone care to join me to discuss fashion for apple shapes? What are you wearing at the minute that you find flattering?

I'm a tall apple shape, size 18ish, but wear anything from a 14 to a 20, depending on what it is. Mainly 18 though.

I've just ordered some loungewear from Hush. I don't normally go for joggers, but trying something new!

Interesting! Not just me then.

Yes, my yoga classes had started up again and I was just getting back into it. Now I am so untoned (that isn't a word, but you know what I mean)! I could obviously just do it in my own time, but it isn't the same. I am going to make a bigger effort. I can take a bit of weight gain. I am big all over, so I'm lucky it doesn't necessarily show too much, (although obviously it isn't ideal). But the lack of muscle tone is horrid. My arms used to be my pride and joy. Not so now. My legs are always fine, but definitely improve with exercise.

What a moany post, sorry! I bring it on myself by being so lazy!

In other news, some new ankle boots arrived yesterday, along with a long necklace and a new long, navy cardi.

The ankle boots aren't my usual style. They're a bit sleeker than usual and I think they are boardering on frumpy... But, I can see them really working with dresses and tights over the winter. Usually I go chunky with footwear, but fancied something a bit different.

I'm an extreme apple at 6ft tall and a size 30 BlushI literally am just boobs and massive belly. I'm very self conscious about my size but I do have very long shapely legs and quite slim ankles for my size. I have learnt that I look much better if I show my legs and ankles as they are my slimmest part. I have started wearing drapey dresses that are no longer than knee length which are not too highcut, tights and boots. The tights seems to flatter my legs more somehow.

I could be in complete denial and I know I am a big girl but I feel a bit more confident this way. I think apple is the hardest shape to dress, does anyone else agree?

TotalBitch · 22/11/2020 10:18

I was discussing this with someone recently and I was saying that I thought apple was the hardest shape. But she was saying how she has bigger arms and legs with what she called "cankles" and hates dressing in summer time as she feels like can't show her legs or arms! I think there is a touch of grass is always greener.

But I always complain that you can hide legs you don't like a lot easier than a torso.

I’m also an apple and have our loads of weight on this year. I think the hardest part of being an apple is people thinking you are pregnant!

TotalBitch · 22/11/2020 10:23

Oh no! I worry about looking pregnant too! Nobody has asked me, except just after I gave birth to dc2 when a few people said "another one already"? Dc2 was less than a month old ffs! How could I be pregnant and showing already 😂😂🤦‍♀️. Control pants help.

I'm a short apple which makes it difficult as it's boobs then belly with no waist at all. I have broad shoulders and boobs too so can look a bit top heavy very easily. Tops that are neither short nor long work best, enough to cover tummy and top of bum. Skinny jeans annoyingly work well although I tend to buy them too big so they are wider legged, but not quite GF fit as they can swamp me. Wrap dresses or anything with a belt is a no go for me.

Luckyelephant1 · 22/11/2020 10:28

@TotalBitch I think it depends on what you're dressing for. I think for casual clothes it may be easier to dress an apple because you can wear loose tops and dresses with fitted bottoms and get away with it especially with a nice pair of boots.

For weddings or formal do's/work parties etc this is what I find very difficult for apples. Most dresses look sooooooo frumpy and go in and out in all the wrong places, or gap around my boobs as they are tiny but strain around my belly. Whereas other shapes always look fab as their bellies are more in proportion so dresses always accentuate their best curves. It doesn't help that pear shapes have been majorly in fashion for the last few years due to the likes of Beyonce and Kim K etc with their big thighs and bums.

RandomMess · 22/11/2020 10:53

The key with dresses is that they need to be straight or slight A-line. I wear a slight plunge affect bra and wear mainly silk dresses with a V neck and most people think I am tiny due to tiny hips and tummy being hidden not to mention stunning legs Wink

The only time I had any sort of waist was when I was borderline underweight and now I have revolting twin skin from have a 10lb6oz baby and only being 5' 😭

peaceanddove · 22/11/2020 11:18

Hello, can I join you? I'm 5ft 6", size 12 and classic Apple shape with large norks, zero waist, flat bum and narrow hips. My stomach is big! I had 2 c-sections very close together which left me with diastatis recti 16 years ago, and I am so, so sick of trying to dress to disguise my tummy. But, 2021 is going to be the year I finally get a tummy tuck!

Thankfully my legs are still very good.

I find skinny jeans aren't flattering for me as they make me look like an apple on a stick. So, my go-to jeans are now GAP Best Girlfriend which skim rather than cling, but still hug my non existant bum. I always wear my jeans slightly cuffed to show my narrow ankles.

For the poster wondering about what footwear to wear with straight jeans - I find sock boots are very good, with just a low heel. Or, I've just ordered some chunky soled, Chelsea boots (the ones that are all over IG right now) and they fit snuggly to about 3-4 inches above the ankle bone, so would sit neatly under straight jeans and keep your ankles warm.

For years I have loved turtle neck jumpers, but have to admit that thanks to my norks they make me look too matronly and busty, which makes me sad, because I love them. I'm trying to embrace v-necks but then I'm always stressed about whether to wear a necklace or not? And, which type of necklace??

For years I assumed my jumpers/tops had to hit the tops of my thighs, if not a fraction longer - and they still look good with pleather leggings. But, I had a revelation recently when I wore a jumper that just sat on my hips. I looked much less bulky around the tum, and neater, because my hips are narrow and my bum is flat. I look much better from the front, but when I turn sideways............not great.

Joswis · 22/11/2020 11:21

I look good in high waist / empire waist dresses. But nowhere really makes them anymore.

TotalBitch · 22/11/2020 11:25

Yes, I used to have the most beautiful Grecian type formal dress which had a high waist and was so flattering. It was from Phase Eight actually. I got to fat for it though, so I sold it. It was lovely.

@peaceanddove, YY, all welcome Smile.

I’m an apple.
When I was relatively slim I always wore skirts and heels to emphasise my legs.
Unfortunately I am quite a bit heavier now and can no longer show my legs off as they have that jiggly, orange peel texture to them 🤢

I live in long maxi skirts mostly now to hide everything, occasionally I’ll deviate and wear joggers.

I’m at a loss tbh now how to dress even slightly attractively.
Haven’t read the full thread yet but hoping to pick up some good ideas...

Annasgirl · 22/11/2020 17:10

It’s funny you should mention the thick-sole Chelsea boots @peaceanddove, they were featured in the Sunday Times Style today and I thought, gosh they would go with my trousers!!! I’ve always loved that style of boot and had a pair about 11 years ago - great to know they are back in style!!! I’ll probably see everyone wearing them now that I have cottoned on to the trend.

Musmerian · 22/11/2020 23:01

@RandomMess - I’m definitely not a vase. My stomach is big but because boobs are so big wrap dresses seem to work for me. Vases have big hips which I definitely don’t have.

RandomMess · 22/11/2020 23:20

I've said the wrong shape name then - it's a V shape....

Have you read through the Trinny and Susannah 10 shapes? I did consider I was a column but when I read through what suits a column versus an apple I'm definitely an Apple.

Never met an Apple that looks good in a wrap dress?

I always think their book is worth a read, back in the day I photocopied the pages on apple shaped rather than keep the whole book! I just had a quick read and perhaps look at the goblet and see if those recommendations work for you.

GoldfishParade · 23/11/2020 06:26

I absolutely hate my apple shape!

I'm 5'9" and a size eight, so visually you expect me to be tall and skinny which I am..

Except for my fucking tummy! I hate it! I would rather be heavier all over.

On the plus side I think this is a very easy shape to dress, it's fairly easy to disguise a little belly.

The other day I was wondering if this is an apple thing: no skirts look good on me. I can pull off quite a few dresses but skirts are so unflattering on me, probably because I'm extremely short waisted, all of my height comes from my legs. So skirts tend to make my legs look comically long and skinny, but then the waist is short and boxy. The only skirt that looks somewhat okay is a skater style, but even then I just dont feel comfortable really

GoldfishParade · 23/11/2020 06:33

The only "celebrities" I've seen with a similar body shape to mine is "Samanda". Remember them?!

I really need this thread. I have no idea what I should be wearing. My appleness has only surfaced in the last few years because of peri-menopause. I am 5"7, size 10-12, bust 34 B, hips about the same, and a large sticky out tummy which I can't seem to hide.

beautifulmonument · 23/11/2020 08:16

I think I am a sort of apple crossed with a rectangle.
Flat chested, short thick waist, big tummy, very narrow hips, skinny legs, shapely calves and ankles, nice shoulders (but weird bony arms). I don't have a flat bottom, it's quite round. Usually wear a size 10.

I like to wear tops that are loose enough to skim my tummy/waist and short enough to show off my narrow hips. The trick is in finding something loose enough to skim but not oversized/bulky. Skinny jeans. Bias cut skirts. Open cardigans/jackets create a vertical line and hide the tummy. Straight shift dresses. My best ever dresses have loose fabric around the belly and waist, pulled in at the hips with a tie. This blue dress is possibly the most flattering thing I own. One-shouldered tops draw attention to the shoulders, away from the tummy.

T shirts (crew neck + short sleeves) tend to be unflattering (too wide). Anything that hides my hips, bum and legs is unflattering (like maxi dresses and looser trousers) and just makes me look big and shapeless. Loose floaty shorts and skater skirts are awful because my legs are so skinny and I look so unbalanced. Obviously the absolute worst is anything with a belted waist.

@beautifulmonument

It sounds like we have very similar bodies and that blue dress...I have one exactly the same but slightly dressier and with spaghetti straps and it is my ULTIMATE dress! So flattering! That side detail almost creates an hourglass effect. Totally with you.

Totally agree about the flowing shorts btw. In fact I dont wear shorts for the reason you say, I just look like child in PE kit. The only shorts i think look good are ultra tiny denim cut offs for example on holiday, but for everyday life? No way will you see me in shorts. I stick to trousers or dresses. Re long dresses i find that maxi dresses that fully cover the (bony) ankles are good when they are tight over the best and just under the bust but then skim without clinging to the dreaded tummy. I also have an arse but small boobs.

I really want to ditch the old fashioned skinnies and wear straight leg jeans but am worried about what you wear on top as I assume tight or cropped looks best (which isnt an option)

beautifulmonument · 23/11/2020 09:04

I live in a sub-tropical climate so shorts are a daily feature here! They need to be short denim cut-offs that are snug around the thighs. Esprit make them and I can't buy them here so my mum posts them to me!

Luckyelephant1 · 23/11/2020 10:14

@GoldfishParade I'm really similar to you except the height, I'm 5'3 and size 8 although people often think I'm much taller for some reason.

If I really work out hard and am militant with my diet then some skirts look OK, they have to skim over my tummy at exactly the right place and must be a-line but not TOO a-line otherwise I look dumpy.

I love the midi skirt trend but unless I wear a bulky jumper with it that hides my tummy I feel so self conscious, but then with a bulky jumper AND the skirt covering my legs I just look really unelegant and covered up. I agree with you'd I'd rather be a bit bigger everywhere so that my tummy is more in proportion! I see people who are so much bigger than me still look fabulous in whatever they wear because their belly is flat. It's so unfair!!! Sorry for the rant lol.

It is true I barely see any apple shaped celebs. There must be some but they obviously hide it very well!

TotalBitch · 23/11/2020 10:20

@GoldfishParade I wear my straight cut Jean's (well, they're gf Jean's, which I think are straight) with longer tops and I think they still look fine. I love tops tucked in or half tucked in or crop tops, but I look all wrong in them. I'm short waisted, so it looks really weird and I do sort of look pregnant if I tuck.

That said, I'm in my Uniqlo jeggings today. With long fitted vest under a v neck t shirt and long cardi over the top. Feeling a bit 2015, but hey ho. It is comfy and flattering. Dh made a comment that all my clothes look to big for me at the moment. This is partly because I must have lost a bit of weight or some inches but also because I love all the oversized things at the moment. So comfy. But, for a change, I've gone with more figure hugging today.

So envious of you Envy @beautifulmonument! Wish I was somewhere tropical today! Grey and miserable here.

@beautifulmonument- I love that dress! I used to have a similar shaped dress from Hush that was so flattering

This is the shape top that works really well for me: V neck, 3/4 sleeves, v gentle empire line. Looks best with skinny or slim jeans
